As the party realise that there is only one way down, Jequine suggests that if they go down the chute, they should do it in a controlled manner. She has a rope which might help, "Do we have any magic which might help? I have a scroll which can help you breath under water. If I could climb down the chute without falling into the water, I might be able to give you some more details on what we face."

![]() |

Kurgand adds to the consensus. "Let's get over to the chute, folks. I'd be willing to make it over there and take the first plunge - hopefully we can make our way without having to swim - but I can manage if we must." He taps the armor for emphasis on the difficulties for himself. The dwarf then makes his way towards the chute to see what they can do to cross down to the next level.

![]() |

Just to clarify my understanding, the end of the chute is submerged under the water, rather than ending above the water.
Jequine searches through her bag, "I did have some magical scrolls here, I don't know if any would help. "
Hmmm, what's this...no not that one...
Ohh! there we have it, I am such a lucky person, we have a scroll of magic which can help us breath under water, that would be useful..."
Jequine, brings out a scroll, covered in arcane writings and the occasional depiction of water and being walking under a wavy blue sky.
A scroll of Water Breathing, not sure the level it was cast at?

A scroll of Water Breathing, not sure the level it was cast at?
Unless specified otherwise (which usually means they cost more), scrolls are always cast at their minimum level, which for water breathing is 5.
Sheridan puts out a hand to stop Kurgand. "One moment friend, if we are to follow this path it should be me who goes first - I can transform myself into something capable of swimming." He turns to Jequine "Your magic would be greatly appreciated. You may leave Gannertung unaffected - for now I will call something more suited to the water, and resummon him on the other side."
Once we are all ready to proceed, Sheridan will switch out Gannertung for a Medium Water Elemental and cast alter self to turn into a Boggard (both effects last 7 minutes). Then he will follow the elemental down the chute.

"One moment friend, if we are to follow this path it should be me who goes first.
Kurgand looks at Sheridan for a bit and shrugs. "Fair enough, Barlow. Lead on and let's hope it works." The dwarf takes on a defensive stance and watches the man go to work.
"Strange stuff indeed," he mumbles watch Sheridan's transformation and summoning.

also waiting on Sheridan to react to the situation
Sorry, I made a post last weekend before I left but apparently it didn't take. I stated that Sheridan puts his back to the elemental and waits with his sword (readied action to strike back if anything attacks), and also reminded you that I currently have both Darkvision and Low-light vision. Regarding the scroll, I thought we were already using it. I don't have any ability to breathe underwater - alter self only gives me a swim speed. Regarding the APG, I think I'm mostly set, but I'll have to wait to be sure until Monday when I have something bigger than a cell phone to type on.

They're out of range for underwater vision, reardless of lighting conditions, and I didn't say they were elementals, which they're not.

I guess we will have used the water breathing scroll then...If we need a 'use magical device' roll, having got in this pickle, then I trust Xaldinaar to do that. By my calculations we have 1hr 40 mins of water breathing, which includes giving some to the healer bot.

"Elemental" was not referring to the creatures, it was referring to my own summoned elemental. And if the creatures are that far away and not immediately moving closer, Sheridan will leave them be and explore further.

Also, APG updates are done. My third-level Summon Monster got upgraded to Summon Monster 4, and Gannertung had to lose the extra reach on his bite attack to pick up the 'mount' evolution.

Sheridan pops his head up out of the water. "There's at least two big lobster-like things coming towards me. I'm assuming they're hostile, but I'll try talking to them." He pops back underwater.
Sheridan keeps his sword readied to strike back if attacked, and calls out in Aquan and then Draconic "Hello?"

Jequine is the 4th or 5th down the shute, at least after Kurgand and Valenos go down after Sheridan. In her hands are a rapier and a dagger, "Someone's gonna pay for getting my hair wet!!"
Once in the water she will try and get into a flanking position behind a creature, or if lucky get surprise on a creature.

Infernal
Valanos will remove his armor, except his helm, and move down the chute.
So armor was a horrible idea for this scenario, I may as well not wear any. I have a dagger as a secondary weapon, which will be equipped, can't move a flail through water well. The check penalty for plate armor is too much, and drowning is the only foreseeable end.

You'll have water breathing from the scroll...

Maybe the scroll is active, but swimming is only 50% operative, and the dimensions of the underwater area are unknown. I suppose I can chance it and maybe throw rope or something if I need to climb. Screw it, I will see how "well" I do with swimming and fighting in water.
Amendment to earlier post: Valanos moves down the chute with all gear equipped and flail ready.

Valanos sinks to the bottom of the level, 20 feet down. feet firmly planted on the bottom. Though you feel the resistance of the water with every movement. The others float near you, more buoyant in their lighter armors.
personally, I would have tried to fight them on firm ground...heh...make them come up the chute, oh well die is cast.

Still have the readied action from a while ago to attack back if struck. If it gets to my actual turn first, Summon Monster 4 for 1d3 ⇒ 2 Celestial Crocodiles and arrange them and the Elemental around the party with readied actions to attack once an enemy gets in range (Crocodiles also use Smite)

Looks like we're all rather stodgy in the water except Jequine, who's making like Esther Williams as a rogue. ;-)
Kurgand readies his axe to swing harder than usual - given his circumstances - on the lobster monsters.
He'll try deft swings of his axe when they attack.
1st Attack:
1d20 + 13 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 13 - 3 = 30

Axe critical multiplier is x3 and you multiply your strength bonus as well, just not any precision based or magical effects.
SHERIDAN: You'll get your readied attack, but will be in combat for the summoning.

That's why I rolled damage three times; forgot about adding strength bonus. So if I take the first damage roll + str bonus and multiply = 15+9 = 24/2 = 12 for damage amount.
Better or did I just make a mess of it?

In seconds the creatures are upon you, not quite lobsters these creatures have tentacles trailing from their mouth area in addition to their claws as they tower 8 feet tall.Kurgand, Valanos and Sheridan are all ready for the attack striking before the creatures have a chance to strike. Kurgand's axe swings slowly but powerfully through the water, cathing Creature 1 off guard, drawing a thick blackish green ichor from the wound inflicted on it. Sheridan strikes Creature 2 with his attack stopping it in it's tracks, though the water elemental can't even hit the thing. Valanos standing on the bottom of the level swings a slow arcing strike that catches creature two as well. You feel a surge of divinity wash over you from above Bless from Delwyn.
