Master of the Fallen Fortress - Free RPG Day 2010 module

Adventures

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

As posted on the Free RPG Day homepage, Paizo will be sponsoring the event as a Gold sponsor with a Pathfinder Module entitled Master of the Fallen Fortress! As awesome as the Bonus Bestiary was last year, it's cool to see a return to the free adventure offering. What do people think this will be about? Will it be a sequel to an adventure we've already seen? Who do you think is writing it?

Good timing, as the product page posting is imminent.

The Product Description wrote:
Master of the Fallen Fortress is a dungeon-based adventure for 1st-level chararacters, written for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and compatible with the 3.5 edition of the world's oldest RPG. It also serves as an introduction to Pathfinder Society Organized Play (Paizo's constantly evolving, world-wide megacampaign). The adventure involves exploring an ancient, ruined tower and rescuing the captured Pathfinder held within.

The two bold points are of interest

  • 1st level, IE not a sequel.
  • a printed module acting as an introduction to PFS? Does this mean the rules for using modules/APs in PFS are forthcoming?

  • If the print version is exclusive, does that mean I can't hound my FLGS for a print copy?

I'm also extremely excited about the preview of the new iconics!

You can hound them to buy a free RPG day box and participate...

Will the Chronicle for PFS play be included as one of the 16 pages of this adventure, or a separate download?

Print copies go out to FLGSs that are participating in Free RPG Day. I suspect (like last year's Bonus Bestiary) we'll have some print copies left over for sale at Paizo.com, should your FLGS run out or not participate.

It's included, I believe on the inside back cover.

You would think that more than 1 game store in Los Angeles would be participating... but Noooooo! Just like last year.
And on my game day at my FLGS, who isn't participating... FML.
I'm almost willing to pay for a box myself just to make it happen...

Will never happen. They've gone 4e and aren't coming back. I'm hoping that if I bring a large box of cookies and some Pathfinder books that I might attract enough rebels to create a group...

Would homemade sandwich cookies [read: oreos] be enough to convert the masses?

But prehaps Sentry Box will ship one to their favorite mail order customer.

Cookies would be enough for me... though I don't really play 4th edition anyway, so I might not be a good example. But I'd be willing to join another game if you had said cookies....and they were delicious.

So would they be interested in the other contents of the box, like say the Dark Sun module? There'll be cool dice and so forth in there too, so it might still be worth drawing their attention to it. Then you can use a free Paizo module along with the power of cookies to try and attract some converts :).

Is this bundled with the retailer's box or is there a separate Paizo box this year?

Also, is there any way to get advance notice about which flipmats and map packs would tie-in with the adventure? I've noticed that a lot of the newer mods and scenarios have some pretty sweet product synergy and I want to make sure I have what I need to run this on game day.

(in fact, it would be awesome if there was some kind of list showing which maps are tied to which products so my FLGS could stock and sell them together)

This one doesn't use any flip-mats or map packs. It's basically a dungeon in the form of a single tower, so you'll need to draw it yourself. Any blank flip-mat will do!

I want to make it extra special for any would-be Pathfinders who are new to the game. Is it a tower I could build out of Dwarven Forge pieces or maybe something from Worldworks?

    Contributor

I *think* so, though it would need a lot of those 45-degree-angle pieces (or you could rotate the map 45 degrees and treat the rooms as mostly square). Areas 6 and 11 may give you some problems with 3D pieces like Dwarven Forge, but that's where a battlemat or flip mat becomes handy....

Whoo hoo! Comic shop plus in Newark and Ravenstone in Columbus are on the list now.

How much does this cost the game store itself? And does the store have to buy everything or just the stuff they want?

Thanks. I just found the link, but this was just as good.

Hopefully, my FLGS will get on this too..

Unfortunately, we only sell to authorized brick-and-mortar retailers. If you would like us to hound a couple of your local retailers, please email me their info at aldo@impressionsadv.net

    Offer to help your FLGS.

I went in, showed them the site and the fact that there were no other competing stores in the area, then explained how it worked and how they could use it to promote games and sales. (The owner is new and hadn't seen this before.)

Once I offered to help and how to promote the event, he was all for it. $60.00 is a small amount to spend if they can make it back with food and other sales.

Lots of store owners mean well, but not all of them are expereinced at sales and promotion. As long you aren't pushy and show them how it can help the store, most are more than happy to listen. And if you're willing to take the 15 minutes or so to help them, its good for everyone.
