Starting a new campaign soon, playing in good old Greyhawk with a DM who plans to convert to PFRPG and run Temple of Elemental Evil, Slavers, Giants and Drow series. Should be a blast.
I will be playing an arrogant, cocky Paladin of St Cuthbert and am looking for advice on making him the pinnacle of melee fighting skill, without any crazy multi-class options. Core rule book only...
Anmar of Dyvers
1st Level Paladin
(Communicant of St Cuthbert)
Al: LG, Age: 30
S: 17 D: 17 C: 15 I: 14 W: 15 Ch: 17
Melee:
Greatsword, or Morningstar & Shield;
Ranged:
Shortspear (morally opposed to sustained missile fire)
Proposed feat choices:
1st level: Power Attack, Cleave
Any ideas?

Wow, lowest score = 14 and three 17's?!?
Now those are some serious paladin stats!
You don't need much help with a build, with stats like that, who cares? ;-)
I'd reassign the 17 from dex to wis... better to have some really good will saves or even to int for the skill points. 17 dex isn't going to help a lot towards AC, as most are capped below 3 max dex modifier (assuming you're going for a full plate. The extra 1 initiative and reflex save are nice, but will save in my book is so much more important. And it helps towards perception (and the sense motive thingy)

For stats I would suggest
S: 17 D: 15 C: 17 I: 14 W: 15 Ch: 17
The Fort save of course is nice, but with a 17 charisma your saves will do pretty well no matter what.
However it appears you what to be in the thick of melee and Con is therefore of outmost importance. First off it gives you an extre hp/lvl, but it also means you die at -17 rather than at -15. That might seem a marginal difference, bu tI have seen those margins mean the difference between life and death on a number of occasions.
