Suggestion for basic Pathfinder RPG handout for Free RPG Day

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

Free RPG Day is coming this June.

I wanted to throw out a suggestion that Paizo publish an advertisement sponsered free quickstart version of the Pathfinder Rules.

The less than 100 page handout would have quickstart rules for using pregenerated characters and would include a short adventure which would take the characters up to third or maybe even fourth level.

At the back of the handout I would have a subset of Paizo's catalog that would include core products and current adventure paths and modules.

The handout itself would have adds from various vendors and other partners to help cover its costs.

The goal of this product is to help introduce new people to traditional RPG games and to provide them with a sense of direction if they want to move further in the hobby.

I think this would be a great idea. Just not to fourth level, that seems a little long. Maybe just to first level? From first to fourth level is roughly one whole adventure path chapter.

I would like pregenerated NPC's for levels 1, 5, 10, and 15 for every class. I can go up or down as needed from there.

While a free 100-page book is not feasible, we will have a free Pathfinder Module as part of this promotion. This first-level adventure, "Master of the Fallen Fortress" (by Rob McCreary) DOES contain pre-generated characters for each of the new classes in the Advanced Player's Guide, and was specifically designed as an introduction to the Pathfinder game.

The free adventure given out last year was pretty good.

I think material aimed at GM's, with advice on how to smoothly introduce to PRPG who may have never played 3.x before, would be alot more realistic than a 100 page 'mini' ruleset.

If such players would be playing pre-gens would make things even more simple, but covering ways to INTRODUCE subjects without requiring fore-knowledge of them, not making a big deal of newbie lack of rules knowledge, making sure to point out their good options clearly so they don't make assumptions that are false, etc... could all improve the newby experience.

Of course, I pulled all of that out of my ass, but maybe there's some "Advanced Gamemastery tips for newbie players" that I can't think of, and in any case, publishing a little cover sheet like this would be a nice reminder to GMs of everything they can do to make a newby's first game a good experience.

Will these pregenerated characters be the new iconics associated with the APG classes? If so, I can't wait!
