Story They even mention the Wisconson decision.

Silver Crusade

The comments to the story are very entertaining.

Edit: And if I may cross-post from another thread... "What a heap of s###ty journalism that is."

Did they remember to include the crucial "imaginary monsters" in that claim?

Funny, the only thing that drives me to even consider violence is using media as a legitimate source to promote ignorance and hate-mongering, such as that article.

D&D is to creating a killer as Monopoly is to creating a real-estate tycoon.

I agree that the comments to that article are far better than the article itself.

No, but they did make sure to include this:
Boston Herald wrote:

Bishop, now a University of Alabama professor, and her husband James Anderson met and fell in love in a Dungeons & Dragons club while biology students at Northeastern University in the early 1980s, and were heavily into the fantasy role-playing board game, a source told the Herald.

“They even acted this crap out,” the source said....McDermott studied engineering at Northeastern in the late 1980s, but Anderson said he never met him. Police seized two Dungeons & Dragons books from McDermott’s Haverhill apartment after he shot seven co-workers to death on Dec. 26, 2000.

So not only did they both play D&D, the author trys to place them in the same campaign.

Dark Archive

Maybe attending Northeastern into killers.

Clowns with time machines should be kicked in the tush. It was funny!

Dark Archive

Did you go to Northeastern? I'm just trying to understand these violent tendencies.

Oh god, this article is a fallacy. EVERYONE knows girls don't play D&D!!! ;-)

If the Boston Herald is making such a fuss about D&D, I assume that alcohol, poverty, bosses who are jerks, customers who are jerks, co-workers who are jerks, depression, politicians, jealousy, ill-advised relationships, illegal substances, substances which are not alcohol but which are legal but which should be illegal, guns, bad TV & films, and many other nasty socio-economic factors have all been eliminated.

I don't think I'd want to barbeque near a forest fire... that's just crazy.

Wow...just wow.

I should have become a journalist; how else can one get paid for turning out crap like that?*

Hmm. Presumably the neighbour wouldn't either.

Okay then. Howabout I improve the imagery with:

Better? :)

It's all true! I usually play D&D (well, Pathfinder now) on Sundays, and the day after, when I have to go to work again, and people annoy me there, I want to shoot them - WITH MY +5 DEMON BOW OF DARKNESS! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Seriously, haven't the Dark Ages ended?

Well, I think they have. People don't blame goblins and demons for everything any more. Now they blame the guys who play a game that has goblins and demons in it. The Dark Ages have ended. The Dim Ages have replaced them.

I'm slowly formulating an email response to Laurel Sweet.

Anyone have some good studies I can point to for support?

Just love the egghead escape part. Funny how being smart or intellectual has become so disrespected of late. Damn those smart people, think they're so smart.

I did have links at one time and if I can find them by this evening I will either post it here or email them to you.

I have found many smart people who actually fit that response actually. They are so smart in fact that they miss the simple things and over complicate issues. It's sad really.

Riiiiiight. Heavily into the hobby and the police only confiscated two books?

Why can't people have real hobbies like hookers and blo?

Don't sit here complaining about it, start an email to the editor campaign and request an apology or correction.

There are hundreds of thousands of players all over the world just have to post a notice on other boards and get them to email the editor and make a civilised request (Make sure that you make clear that people should not get stupid and prove the journalists point).

letterstoeditor@bostonherald.com

Something like this.

Dear Editor,

I found the article by Laurel J. Sweet to be highly inaccurate and insulting. I request an apology or correction removing any suggestion that the game or people that play Dungeons & Dragons are more likely to be violent or suffer from antisocial behaviour than anybody else.

If you consult the police you will find drugs, alcohol, lack of quality education and poverty the main factors in violence in society.

The article is an example of a journalist assigning blame for what is ultimately a very complicated tragedy. History is replete with groups that are made scapegoats for people searching for simple answers to complex problems.

The role-playing community is a large one and you will find that a considerable number of readers and your staff have played or do various role-playing games. I am forwarding my email to the following people who play D&D with a request they contact you and express their concern about the quality of this article.

Jon Favreau

This paragraph BLEW MY MIND:

"She was quite cavalier about it,” Fluckiger said of Bishop’s description of her interview with police. She said Bishop “grinned” as she described being asked by cops whether she’d ever taken stamps off an envelope and fastened them onto something else. “I cannot tell you what the grin meant,” Fluckiger said."

I think that they would enjoy the experience because thats what they were doing to quality journalism.

Its like a modern version of "make love, not war" - "humping not homicide........"

Its sad, but unavoidable that people would drag RPG games into this. I remember watching a religous sermon on YouTube where a pastor was lambasting Pokemon as the latest tool of the devil. Forunately most people nowadays are a little less gullable about this kinda crud compared to the 80s when phycologists had to prove that people were being manipulated into claiming that they were being possessed by the devil.

If anyone wants to spend efforts refuting this, don't. Your energy is better spent on showing people how much fun our hobby can be, than to fight with fringe cases who bark louder than they bite.

Oh and I sent off a copy as well.

Letting people know that they are demonising people on false pretences is important.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Didn't one of the Paizo people SWEAR to us that there was no way that the Wisconsin Prison ruling could ever be used against the community? Something about the ruling stating that it wasn't against D&D in general, just that it could be used as a code for gang-related activities and that everything is clearly stated in the write-up.
In a world where logic should prevail we find ourselves surrounded by idiotic mouth-breathers who take a headline or a sliver of the idea of a fact and twist it to their own fear-mongering usage. There are 2 problems with this....
1. The people who couldn't see that this could happen because people should have logic.
2. The people who don't have logic that get into positions where they are allowed to spit influence into society from an uneducated stance and have the words bear some weight.

Now. Who wants to bet on how long before THIS article is used as a basis to attack the D&D community for some other issue? Perhaps a school will ban D&D game club due to the 'preponderance of evidence linking D&D to violent crimes' then citing this article AND the Wisconsin incident?
Slowly gaining momentum.....

It was pretty satisfying to read 9 pages of burn.

They said the same things about violent video games and school shootings.

When I went to basic training and was about to go on the shooting range, I thought I would totally pwn those targets. Turns out I got 15 out of 40...I sucked! The people who scored better were the deer hunters i.e., the rednecks.

Liberty's Edge

What was you doing wrong?

It's helpful to have fired a rifle a few times before getting to Basic Training anyhow; my father taught me how it's done with a .22 squirrel rifle.
Didn't shoot any deer; had about 30 acres out in the country though, so rifle shooting was accessible. Hard to pick up practice living in suburbia and having to go to a range or something like that.
