Shod Staves?

Rules Questions

The subject of using 'shod' quarterstaves came up in a game session, and we notice that the rules explicitly state this can't be done - is anyone aware of the basis for said ruling?

Whether you refer to it as shodding, or just dipping the end in 'silver', it seems like it SHOULD be do-able.

I may have to go off into houserule territory, but just wanted to be aware of anything I may not have considered...

I assume you're referring to this line;

mithral:
Items not primarily of metal are not meaningfully affected by being partially made of mithral. (A longsword can be a mithral weapon, while a quarterstaff cannot.) Mithral weapons count as silver for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
and
silver, alchemical:
The alchemical silvering process can't be applied to nonmetal items, and it doesn't work on rare metals such as adamantine, cold iron, and mithral.

I don't really see why you couldn't just pay 2,000gp to make a 4lb rod that's conveniently shaped like a quarterstaff...

Thanks for the reply!

I was indeed referring to those specific exceptions ;)

As to the rod, I agree, however Im not sure 1.8kg/4lb would give you a lot of actual size due to the density of the material - it would either be too short or too thin, and lack the required 'heft'.

Would work just fine as a Tonfa or similar though...

An annoying rule - seems rather harsh, but obviously intentional.

We use shod staves with different materials. It seems to work well.

I've always ruled you can 'shod' quarterstaffs. No balance issues, I do rule you have to masterwork them though to do so. Which is not a huge deal above 1st level, which is why I do it, to keep it from 1st level characters.
