Percy Jackson & the Olympians

Movies

Has anybody seen this one? I saw it today. It is pretty entertaining. Surely nothing outstanding, but is has some very nice ideas and does generally a good job of placing greek myths in todays US.

Movie spoiler:
I liked the lotophages placed in Vegas. And I wondered how anybody would explain the giant ten-headed hydra in the Parthenon in Tennessee the next morning... And the placing of the Hades entrance in Hollywood was nicely self-ironic.

It felt like watching SCION: The Movie.

I enjoyed it quite a bit.

It was a little appetizer before the new Clash of the Titans. Not as good as the Wolfman, but I still thought it was worth seeing, if you're a fan of Greek mythology.

As did I.

Now I totally want to play SCION. :)

I liked it well enough. It covered the major bases of the book, had some nice effects, and delivered most of what was promised. There were a few key cuts from the book, as you'd generally expect, but overall not bad.

I'd say my one critique is just that I'd have liked to have seen a bit more time spent on the "before we go to the magical side of the street" part of the story, just to set us up a little more with it. I know that's hard to do, but the first Harry Potter movie I thought did well with it. I suppose he had more material to work with, though. The Lightning Thief does get into the action pretty quickly, so I suppose it's more of an "I wish..." than a real critique of the movie vs. book.

So, it's a solid B, maybe lower if you are easily upset by variations from the book. Nothing to light your pants on fire, but an enjoyable matinee.

P.S.

Spoiler:
Rosario Dawson as Persephone? Holy bleeping meeeeeee-YOW!!! Hubba hubba indeed.

I was considering watching it before I read this, but now I'm less sure. Meh, I'll probably watch it anyway, but quietly insert witty comments.

i hacent read the books, and enjoyed it very much

What in particular undermined your certainty?

Took my 10yo twins to see it, the one who hasn't read it yet loved it, the one who read the entire series in less than two months was a little disappointed that a lot of the stuff in the book didn't make it onto screen, namely anything involving Dionysus. I enjoyed it, the wife was disappointed about 15 minutes in.

Liberty's Edge

Did anybody else think of this every time they saw Grover with his pants off?

Nice. Well played, sir.

Knowing about satyrs from Greek mythology, I was disturbed by the whole Grover-without-pants thing. Thank God it he was not mythologically-accurate.

Yeah, it might've brought new meaning to the abbreviation "PG-13"!

Decent flick.

I enjoyed how Tartarus looked like post apocolyptic Los Angeles.
