Who Watches the Watchers (RSS Feeds)?

Okay, I'm curious. Is anyone out there using RSS Feeds for any particular poster and if so, which ones? I lack the technological sophistication to use the system (plus, the only posts I really want to read are my own, and I know when I write them).

Dark Archive

How do you think I track you down.

I should use the Rss feeds to follow things such as PBP but I don't.

I use RSS feeds to see new threads on the boards (in fact, that's how I arrived here) and to keep track of PbPs, but that's it. I never considered using RSS feeds to follow certain posters, though.

Just added Sebastian to my subscription list. The only problem is that it takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours before I see posts in my reader, so any unfunny responses I make to Sebastian's posts will not be as impactful.

I am the only poster worth following

How does it work? If I post then delete, do you see the deleted post? If I edit a post, do you get an update after I finish?

I think so. Why don't you try it for a bit and see how it works.

I suppose I could, but I am so full of technological fail, that I don't even know where to begin. I'm lucky if I can turn on the monitor.

If the feed picks up your post quickly enough, it will show up before you delete it. Still, you have a considerable amount of time to alter or delete your post before the feed picks it up.

Google, "Google Reader".

That may be your best option. Watch their help videos, or otherwise read throught their help section about using it.

I am informed that one of my players stalks me this way. I use the same function to follow a few Paizo people. That was more useful when the APs I'm running where the current products coming out but is still often amusing in its own right. I don't stalk any non-Paizo folks. Well not with RSS feeds.

And I use it to archive my own posts because sometimes I write long things I want to save. It has nothing to do with my incredible ego. Nothing at all. I certainly don't print out the contents of the feed and roll around naked in it, basking in the golden glow of my own brilliance.

Fixed that for you.

It's a way to be lazy about keeping up with updates on a website. You put the feed in a reader, and when the feed gets updated, your reader lets you know.

See the little red button at the top right of this thread. That gives you a link to the RSS feed for this thread. You stick that link in your reader of choice (Google Reader, Bloglines, what have you), and now any post that's been put on this thread will show up in the reader.

You can do the same with the "recent threads" in the main messageboard or on a subforum to see all new threads opened up. And, as I found out yesterday, you can select a poster to follow, by getting the RSS feed from their recent posts.

Here's Callous Jack's RSS feed, for example.

Hmmm...this leads me to believe that RSS feeds are dangerous Concentrating so much inspidness in a single webpage should cause damage to the internet.

Thanks taig.

Interesting stuff. Plus, now I know how it is that my best posts are located and deleted so quickly by Ross.

RSS (most commonly expanded as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed",[3] or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI or by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

In a related subject, I've often wondered about the marvelous rapidity with which the Paizo staff reply to questions and comments. I wonder if the boards search for their names in posts and forward them to the relevant staffer.

Google has a way to do a "vanity alert" so it will inform you when your name shows up in the web. I'm not sure if that's what they're using, or if Gary has a super-secret program that does the same thing just for these boards.

It would be easy to set up.

Depends how often the reader is set to query. I refuse to mention what mine is set to, they would block my IP. ;)
