Tim and Eileen Connors to Lead Open Design Anthology

Product Discussion

The Exchange Kobold Press

For the latest Pathfinder project from Open Design, Paizo authors Tim and Eileen Connors are leading the charge. It's an anthology-style project, so up to 8 project patrons will be published designers by the end of it.

It covers levels 1 to 10 and the theme is the Deep Dark Forest: Tales of the Old Margreve. Currently seeking patrons.

Thoughts?

Awesome?

I need to hurry up and get a day job so I can be a patron?

I have just got one question: No print on demand option for this one?
:(

The Exchange Kobold Press

Yep, it will have a POD option of some kind. Not sure what that looks like, because Tim is still talking about 2 books (adventure anthology plus a gazetteer), and I'd prefer one book combining the two.

But there will be print, yes there will.

That's great, I will sign in after the paycheck arrives :)

How about one book combining the three: adventure anthology, gazetteer, and bestiary. Heh heh.

By now, I am convinced by Wolfs judgment and I just signed up. Not that I already have enough stuff to last me at least two lifetimes...

The Exchange Kobold Press

Thanks Stebehil! I think this one will include a lot of material that is useful in any Pathfinder campaign.

And I have a lead on a cover artist as well who might surprise people. Should have more on that front in April.

*waits for paycheck after starting a new job*

I feel ya there Watcher.

Now you are a tease! The good thing is, I don´t really _need_ any more RPG stuff, so waiting is not that bad.

I have another question: I decided not to buy 4e, and as a consequence, did miss out on Wolfs 4e projects - which is a shame, considering some of the topics. What am I missing there? Is the 4e content so prevalent as to make it more or less useless for me, needing too much conversion?

Now that I see the names of the patrons pouring into this project, I'm getting more and more excited about realizing the potential of Tales of the Old Margreve. I can't wait to hold this product up to my players and say, "See this? You've never confronted a single monster in this book. You've never heard of any of the spells that will be used against you. You've never imagined the treasures at the end of the stories we're about to tell together. We're going to go into this book, and some of you aren't going to come out again."

Bienvenue, Francois! See you in the Margreve clubhouse.

Good suggestion from a patron; these adventures will slot very neatly into Ustalav and/or Irrisen.

Like the cover. Vasilisa the Beautiful was a great fairytale, and it featured Baba Yaga. And I love Bilibin's illustrations of it.

Wolfgang and Tim,

I humbly submit myself for Patronage. I can't wait to apply some of the things I've learned in RPG Superstar to this fine project.

And vice versa, I hope Paizo won't be mad if I said Mr. Baur and Associates are fine teachers, who in the past have provided me opportunities to learn.

Baba Yaga?
Another School of Magic?

I'm there.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Watcher, we're glad to have you aboard. I'd love to hear some of the Superstar lessons.

Leonis472, you have good taste in art. I think Bilibin's work will show up again in the Old Margreve, at least for inspiration. The final cover will likely be different.

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

You had me at "Tim and Eileen Connors". I'm in.

I don't know how much I'll contribute, but I'm interested in seeing how the process works. I got in too late to see much of Sunken Empires development. Watching the wrap-up is still educational, though.

Looking forward to it!

Fabulous having Superstars on the Old Margreve project!

You'll feel right at home. Some brilliant brainstorms are flashing across the project's boards. Right now, we're talking about the fortified inns and crumbling griffon towers that dot the Great North road that bisects the Margreve. We're discussing dark fey and slavik dragons, daughters of Baba Yaga and old Green Gods. Patrons are voicing their ideas about the Old Ways, numinous forces, and Old World magic. Senior patrons are collecting superstitions, inventing Margreve locations, and wrangling creatures from Eastern European folklore into the bestiary.

This is a BIG forest. We're looking for more scouts. Can't wait for you to raise a torch and take us down another dark path!

I am interested in being a patron as well. Even if I don’t get anything published it looks like a great learning experience. I would also love the opportunity to work alongside Watcher as well – no matter how slight. His accomplishments so far in the RPG Superstar have been very impressive and inspiring.

I haven’t had any game stuff published – but have had a few comic books stories published and a movie screenplay optioned.

The project has gathered steam at an incredible pace; more than 60% of the way to its goal, and the patrons include stars of previous Open Designs and a good mix of new folks as well.

And Edward, if you've gotten a movie optioned, I'm sure you will bring some great character and plot elements to this one. Welcome aboard.

I hear we're 75% commissioned already! I feel like I'm collecting tickets for the latest rollercoaster. Only, in this case, the people in line get to decide where to place the twists, turns, and screams!

I've been going back and forth on the fence. Is there any additional information on content aside from what I'm reading here?

The Exchange Kobold Press

Sure, there's quite a bit more information on the KQ.com home page, and an outline went up yesterday. Also, this from Tim higher up the thread:

In addition, I'd say the touchstones so far are the collision of a impregnable or at least dangerous forest with civilization at the outskirts, and mapping neatly to Golarion locales like Irrisen and Ustalav. The exact nature of the 8 adventures remains to be see, of course: the project commission hasn't been met yet, but they will be for level 1 to 10, and will each be self-contained and likely playable in 1 or 2 sessions.

Tim is busy creating the new magic system with patron input, and the monster suggestions are all rather good. There's bits of reincarnation, dark forest cults, and hidden knowledge based on the forest's secrets.

What would you like to know beyond level, theme, and topics?

Hm. That's a good start, WB. This would actually be my 1st patronage project (I'm still keeping an eye out on two more coming up that really holds my interests) and I've been reading positive things about the Connors' works, so color me intrigued. And I did pick up one of the Zobeck products last November and really like what I saw (i.e. the clockwork contents).

I guess I'd at least be observing and understanding how things work at this point, which would make a regular Patron. Not really understanding the Quantity # levels, though. Again, it's my naiveity. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

~sighs and looks in my wallet, then turns it over and shakes out a few pennies~

Add another few percents to that.

I have just bought myself a standard ticket for the ride. If I had more time to spare, I would have spent a bit more.
Some people actually have to run adventures during their spare time while others merely need to write them you know. :)

Lots going on. Right now, the patrons are selecting Slavic mythos creatures for the bestiary and inventing deep woods adventure sites. Senior patrons are starting to think about Old World spells and adventure pitches.

We're closing in on full commission, at which point the price of patronage goes up. Since this is Pathfinder, I wanted to give Paizo fans the first heads up that there's still time to join up and lend your imagination to the Dark Wood frontier.

Paizo Employee Developer

I am in, and it is awesome! Maybe next time I will also have the time and money to be a "senior" patron, but for now I'll test the waters with my basic patronage. So far, so good...

Tales of the Old Margreve is 85% to commission! Come get in before the greenlight & add to the brainstorm.

It's an interesting concept but I'm used to being paid to contribute, not paying to contribute. I'll be interested in seeing what you come up with, though. Good luck on it, everyone!

Actually, the folks that write the 8 adventures that will make up this project DO get paid. The other stuff like spells, monsters, an just idea contributions just get credited.

Ah, okay. I guess I misunderstood it.

Argh, that reminds me, back to work on 4WFG's Tome of Monsters; 4,000 words to go.

This is very important to note; Open Design is very good about immediately contracting with it's designers when a pitch is accepted and then working with them through delivery and playtest of the manuscript. Designers are compensated, and contributors are credited. A core concept is that patrons are there at the elbow of the designer, providing immediate feedback.

Having participated in the last 9 projects as a senior patron, contributed to 7 and written for 2 of them, I can tell you it's a fantastic and educational experience. If you've got the means to participate, give it a try-- you will not be disappointed!

No point, Tome of Monsters won't be out until the Fall, and this conversation will be long gone by then. If I was going to plug, I'd pitch one of the other projects I'm working on for 4WFG that will be available sooner.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the project has met the commission and is moving forward into design.

Also, as a bonus, the English madman Richard Pett has joined the merry crew for Tales of the Margreve and will be pitching something truly vile. He hasn't told me that in so many words, but I have my suspicions. :)

Join us as the project kicks off!

Yes, the horror has arrived in a cage called Richard Pett. Think you can write a better adventure than Mr. Styes? Now's your chance to try! Rich, my wife and I, and the other senior patrons of Open Design will be competing this week for a slot in Wolfgang Baur's "Tales of the Old Margreve" adventure anthology. Join as a regular patron to vote for your favorite pitches or as a senior patron to compete against us.

Dark Archive

A preview of the first four adventures in the anthology is up on the koboldquarterly.com website here.

Patrons are choosing the final two adventures in the next few days, so if you want a say in what makes it into the anthology, sign up right away!
