Pacific Time zone. Only ~10.15 when I made that.

From a distance the world looks blue and green,

and the snow-capped mountains white.
From a distance the ocean meets the stream,
and the eagle takes to flight.

From a distance, there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
It's the voice of hope, it's the voice of peace,
it's the voice of every man.

From a distance we all have enough,
and no one is in need.
And there are no guns, no bombs, and no disease,
no hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance we are instruments
marching in a common band.
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace.
They're the songs of every man.
God is watching us. God is watching us.
God is watching us from a distance.

From a distance you look like my friend,
even though we are at war.
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
what all this fighting is for.

From a distance there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
And it's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves,
it's the heart of every man.

It's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves.
This is the song of every man.
And God is watching us, God is watching us,
God is watching us from a distance.
Oh, God is watching us, God is watching.
God is watching us from a distance.

I'd love to, but I don't think I do it enough, and haven't recently. I have a buddy who's real good on eBay who coaches me. What's worked is something like this: You watch an item that you want and has a great price. Set an alarm for its final 5 minutes (more if you have to wait on the computer). Then, in say the final 3 minutes when you enter the bid, you bid like 2 cents more than the minimal increase. Everybody tends to give themselves say a 1 cent leeway to try to fool people into giving up bidding, so you are trying to overcome that increment that they have preset. If they're really committed to getting it, they may be set the final bid high enough that you aren't willing to go that far, or you run out of time. You have to be fast entering bids, and depending on how much you want it, you might start a little earlier than 3 minutes.

Good morning! I spent the past weekend watching the first season of Castle with my wife, looking for an apartment, and buying way too many clothes (it feels like the first day of school).

I've got a 10:15 start time, so I won't get a good feel for the commute today. I will tonight when I come home, though.

Thanks for all the well-wishes. I'll be back later tonight, if not at lunchtime.

I hope you all had good weekends and have a great Monday.

I hope your day has been going well.

I feel like I should cheer every time those words come up.

Or, perhaps, I should slap a gamist in the head every time those words are written. It would do wonders for the soul.

So, should I feel guilty about requesting vacation time so soon after coming back from disability?

I have 5 weeks vacation time to burn. Use or lose it company.

I'm thinking 'not', 'cause recuperating has not exactly been fun and relaxing.

Well, now you can go to my list and cheer all you want.

Also, I really enjoy Maliszewski's stuff, even though I don't completely agree with him -- and certainly Finch and the 3e Hate gang labor under a bunch of delusions, as far as I'm concerned.

I would not feel guilty about it. That time is yours to burn. At what point will you lose it?

Year end. I'll hold back a couple of weeks for the fall. I can't afford to go anywhere, but time off is always nice. Damn hospital wants 3 grand, so I should be looking for a part-time job. *sigh*

Cookies would go great with the fresh pot of coffee I made.

I have a great deal of respect for the OSR and I tend think of James as the de facto leader. Their opinions of 3e notwithstanding, they almost wholly represent the way I like to run my campaigns. I can understand their conclusions on 3e and how they got there. I may not agree, but I do understand the feelings they have about the game.

However, if I could go back in time armed with the knowledge about the path the game would take after the inception of 3e, I would not hesitate to do it. A box was opened that can never be shut and I don't think the designers of 3e ever expected things to go the way they did. I am not entirely sure what I would change, as the 3e rules set is a good expression of earlier edition ideals collected under a unifying mechanic. I imagine I would be fighting a war of ideals and we know how those go. It is a tough thing to consider.

I have always been curious about the process that occurred and how the current state of the game was achieved. There was a definite shift in how some people thought of the game and those ideals have won out. I wonder if those things have a root earlier in the life span of D&D or not. The OSR seems to think so but I am not entirely certain.

OSR?

I just don't see how 3e mechanics detract from verisimilitude, and the examples they give aren't at all persuasive to me--they seem special pleading, exaggerative, prejudiced, etc. The fact that there are structures for characters to attempt almost any action imaginable, and it not be left up to the limited resources of the DM of the moment, all add to inhabiting the game world/suspension of disbelief, as far as I am concerned.

James Malizewski (I always fear spelling it wrong.) Haven't seen him post here in a long time, but I highly recommend his blog, Grognardia, if you've never read it.

I know I'm jumping in more than halfway(and may indeed be quite wrong on the conversation), but colour me interested.

As someone who drank the "many games, one system" kool-aid back when d20/3.0 games were just getting big, I was very much on the recieving end of a lot of scorn from other gamers, particularly 2nd ed adherents. I didn't let it get to me though: I really wanted there to be one system everyone could agree on. Perhaps it was guilt over what I had done in years previous: No stranger to elitism, I blew more money on white wolf material than I could currently justify all in a vain effort to prove the horrible D&D/2nd ed = morons who can't roleplay to save their lives trope(did I mention that I've run exactly three games of white wolf stuff in my entire life and they fell apart within a fortnight due to fights over who was "doing it right" with the exception of Scion?). I must agree that eventually it was very much a war of ideals as described above- a lot of delusions on both sides that resulted in a lot of people walking away from the game(and, interestingly enough, to LARPing and MMORPGs).
