Gorram wind knocked my recyclable bin down and blew stuff all over the cul-de-sac. Had to pick it all up. o_o

Effing garbage men are never this late on Thursday.

Okay. Borrowed 10 bucks to get a GIGANTIC platter of shrimp with black bean sauce and white rice for lunch. Listening to THYME and considering switching over to Perfume when I get the chance. This will be an excellent lunch break.

Thanks Toga-Man.

I believe AB suffers from Fibromyalgia.

I'm sorry that you're having a flare up, AB. Similarly, but not the same, my wife suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, and she has bad days, usually when the weather changes suddenly.

What's flaring? There are so many, many things. Around here, it's allergies. Cottonwoods are cottoning(?).

I think he may be referring to this.

Sorry to hear this is a bad day for it, Alleynbard. Have the doctors been able to manage the symptoms somewhat so far?

Hmm. Usually when I see "toga man" I think of myself...

Indeed, it is Fibromyalgia.

I do have some serious issues with weather changes. It recently rained and turned very cool here and I had a flare. But today is beautiful, sunny, and 68 degrees. I can only assume it must have been something I ate last night.

Certain additives in food can cause flares, as can too much caffeine and too little water. I ran a game last night and I likely did all of the above. I had McDonald's for dinner (gods I hate that place), drank too much soda, and did not get enough water.

So, it is likely my fault. But man I do hate it when these things happen. My left arm was useless for most of the day.

Stress can be a trigger and I must admit I never should have gone into that Arizona thread. :) But I can't imagine outrage over idiocy on both sides of the aisle is really something that would have triggered this flare. I am not usually so easy to impact.

As far as symptoms go, the only serious relief I have found is with the severe depression that comes with fibro. The pain, the digestive issues, and some of the mental fog still plagues me. In fact, one of my new medications actually make the mental fog worse. The pain is the worst because it is so widespread and it is so easy for me to twist a wrist or ankle now that I can't reliably do anything with too much activity.

According to what I have read recently, fibro is likely a nervous system disorder that lowers the pain threshold. So, someone might slightly twist a wrist or pull their neck and not feel any significant pain. But for those with fibro, the pain feels much worse.

Interestingly enough, fibro is much rarer in men than women. Men tend to believe they just need to "shake it off" and, in the process, likely make their situations worse. I know I did that for over two years.

My wife is a long-time sufferer of Fibro. Some of the indicators that she will suffer a flare up are:

a drop in the air pressure- anything more than .2
stress
not enough sleep
spending too much time in the same position

She fought it for a long time with exercise- regular walking and working out helped. Since it's gotten worse, she's moved on to muscle relaxers to sleep and deep tissue massage by someone familiar with fibro. The massage hurts during, but it helps later. She also recently found a fibro cookbook that reccomends certain diet changes for relief. Such as cutting down processed sugar, wheat flour, green peppers, and switching to unwashed brown rice.

I called (I'm at work)- it's called 'The Fibromyalgia Cookbook' by Shelley Ann Smith. We've only had it for a short time, so I can't give any results from using it yet.
If you need to talk to a fellow sufferer, she was diagnosed in '95. Our email is:

Thank you so much Niel...I really appreciate these suggestions. I have been getting some good, low-impact exercise through yoga and I have been tempted by the deep muscle massage. I need to look further into that.

Right now, I am thinking I might need muscle relaxers as well. Cymbalta is doing nothing to help with the pain. Interestingly enough, I saw a recent study that stated that Cymbalta has generally less effective results for men with fibro than women with fibro. If true, I really need to get that sorted.

I am going to hunt that cookbook down right now. I have to make some changes to my diets.

Finally, thank for you giving me an outlet for discussion. It always helps to have someone to talk to when the flares are bad. If I need to talk and get some advice, I might drop a line. I can't imagine dealing with fibro that long, but it would be good getting an idea how to handle it in the long term since I am faced with much the same problem.

Call any time- She's smarter tham me so her advice is better without my fuzzy interface. We don't do facebook, so email or phone is best.

I always feel kind of sick after work "food days". I usually eat too much.

Agreed. It's a nasty, along with RA, lupus, etc. I believe they are making serious inroads in the field of rheumatology and hope they'll have better treatment offerings soon. Cures in our lifetime would be awesome, huh?

Has anyone tried meditation for pain management? I've been hearing a lot recently about meditation's benefits for all sorts of medical conditions - anxiety, pain, depression, addictions - and the results seem pretty good.

+1 on the Cymbalta tip.

Although some people have said this medication has saved their lives when it comes to their fibromalasia symptoms, I've found that it really doesn't do much for those I know that take it. It's great for the OCCASIONAL aches and pains of depression and for perhaps a certain type of fibro, but not the ones I've encountered.

Good luck with the muscle relaxants- if you can get the scrip for 'em, use them. Do NOT get addicted, however, that's a type of hell I wouldn't wish on ANYONE.

Thanks guys. COMPLETELY unexpected. My advisor pretty much said, give up all hope of getting honors. There were some real wild cards on my committee, so I was completely shocked that they gave me an honors on both defense and diss. It actually made me kind of sheepish, with everyone going, You got HONORS on BOTH? Enjoy my being bashful, because IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!

I read that.

I would say eat their brains, but........

That reminds me...

A couple of days ago I was watching a highlight film of Dick Butkuss with some comments by coaches and players in his era. One guy (an official?) told how he tried to stand up to Dick Butkuss's (sp?) intimidation tactics and spouted off to him "One word out of you and I will bite your head off." Butkuss promptly replied "If you do that, you will end up with more brains in your stomach than you have in your head."

I've never seen a group of mostly peaceful protesters, such as the Tea Party, being turned into villians. Is there any wonder that conservatives like myself have learned to distrust the mainstream press?

4 minutes until my phone interview.

I got word from a job I applied for in Denver. The recruiter told me I was one of two choices, and we scored the exact same thing on the "competency test", but the other guy has more experience with C++, so he got the job. I'm "on file" though. I have to wonder if I was just being rejected gently.
