See, people throwing out random quotes from Futurama and references to Fallout 3 and I'm lucky to know what my name is.

Red Dwarf?
Not joking about not knowing Red Dwarf. And, I am too lazy to look it up.
Red Dwarf is a Sci-Fi comedy show put out by the BBC. It's only about the best show EVAR!!
Seriously though, it was a very well written sci-fi comedy. The Red Dwarf is a deep space mining ship. The two lowest people on the ship are Lister and Rimmer. They are both chicken soup vending repair men. Anyway, Lister breaks a rule in the first episode by bringing an unquarantined animal (a pregnant cat) on board and gets put into suspended animation until they return to earth. Lister gets let out of suspended animation after three million years. The crew were wiped out by a radiation leak. So all that's left is Lister (the last human being alive), Rimmer (come back as a hologram), and "Cat" (a creature who evolved from the pregnant cat he brought on board 3 million years ago. Kryten makes an appearance in season 2 but doesn't become a regular until season 3. There's also Holly the ship computer who seems to go through random gender changes.
Anyway, that's a brief bit of background. It really should be required watching for anyone who browses these boards. The writing really is very good. There's, of course, a bit of slapstick, but every episode tells a solid story that actually makes sense. One of the interesting things about Red Dwarf is that they have been rather consistent in that there are no aliens. The writers determined that in their universe, humans are truly unique and that any life they find in the universe is a result of things that humans do or don't do.
If you have an opportunity, you really should check it out.

Am I the only one who was a little disappointed with Back to Earth?

On a more serious note... I know you're in SD, but what are your thoughts on SoCal as a place to live, in terms of expense, quality of life, etc?Sadly, my serious opinion does not differ that much from my Futurama quote. I hate Southern California. It's a godforsaken desert with too many people, you can't do anything or go anywhere without a car, most of it is mass-produced cookie-cutter urban sprawl without character or soul, the people by and large are ignorant of the rest of the country (though, if you're coming from New York, this may not actually be a change), and everything is expensive (bread, eggs, and milk, to name a few things, but also gas).
To top it all off, the state government is run by a collection of chimps, the term limits prevent anyone with any competence from rising up in the legislative ranks, and a large number of laws are created through operation of a direct democracy system, the likes of which the founding fathers were wise to avoid.
It's ugly, it's dry, it's brown, it's carpeted in asphalt and cement, there are earthquakes, and the sun never f~&*ing goes away.
Seriously, I hate Southern California, I'd move if we hadn't already put down some roots and there were a viable opportunity elsewhere.
From my limited experience (my wife is from there and we visit around once a year), Sebastian pretty well nailed it. Except that from what I understand, LA is even more so. A lot of people really like it there, but those are people who REALLY like the sun. It almost never rains and it is dry (but not as dry as Colorado Springs). The California laws and such are bizarre to say the least.
It is a really nice place to visit (IMO), but I wouldn't want to live there. Besides, I like the snow. And we don't get enough of it here.
Sebastian -- are you looking? Is there nowhere that will take a couple of lawyers?
Hmm. I live in a place that gets about 100 inches of snow a year. Trust me, it gets old.
I don't anticipate getting stuck there. In fact, since the goal is just to go to grad school out there, there is a strong likelihood that I will have to relocate again afterwards for a job.
I agree that it doesn't seem like the kind of place I could live in forever, but a sunny fast-paced city seems like a good place to spend the next 5 or 6 years.

I had mixed feelings about it. Did you see/like Blade Runner? My wife hasn't really watched Blade Runner and she didn't get it that much. I thought that the references to Blade Runner were brilliant. It also didn't have a laugh track and not much in the way of background music which hurt it a bit I felt.
I was just glad that they put SOMETHING out.

Makes sense since pomme frite is french for well french fries. Although that term has always bugged me. Pomme is apple. Pomme de terre are potatoes. Pomme frite sounds like apple fries. Ah the general weirdness of language. :)
