Let's see if we can make some professional connections

I don't think this violates any of the policies, but if it does just flag it and a dev should delete it fast enough. Also if so my apologies in advance.

Here's my thought. We're a fairly "unique" (in a good way) community. Why not see if we can make some professional connections. Perhaps if you're looking for a particular employee or a particular job you could post it here. I know it's a long shot, but never hurts to ask. For the sake of clarity, lets follow the same basic format, but of course alter it to suit your needs.

I am a: Job seeker

Location:Atlanta, GA or Telecommute

What's the skinny?; I recently graduated (this month) with a Masters in Industrial Organizational Psychology. I'm looking to get into the field of Consulting and/or high level HR. I have a military background as well as some independent consulting with government agencies and non-profits.

What do you really want? Does anyone know anyone who is with a consulting company with a presence in Atlanta such as Deloitte, Boston consulting, etc.

Reply to this asking for resume or contact information if anyone knows anything/anyone. Thanks in advance.

Guess not. *shrug* worth a shot.

This probably isn't what you're asking for, but (if you aren't too entrenched in Atlanta) have looked west to Huntsville, AL? Huntsville is a high-tech, military-friendly area steeped in space and defense. We have a large number of small, mid, and large companies. Someone with your background and qualifications could probably find something here with a little legwork.

Best of luck regardless!

Well my first thought was "bloody wonderful idea" so hopefully someone else will bite. I'm personally happily employed in the space industry in the UK, so can't contribute, but...

Normally, we as a people tend to be fairly 'interesting' in the realm of Networking.

And by 'as a people', I mean gamers.

As for me, I work in Server IT, so I would not be in a position to recommend HR positionage...though I do know, in light of you being in the Atlanta area TCG, have you looked into HCL? If not, depending on your feelings about outsourcing and off-shoring vis a vis IT, it may be a good thing, especially if you want to find companies that want to expand overseas, instead of cutting locally and redistributing work elsewhere.

Any time you want to apply for a position throwing boxes at UPS, just let me know, and I'll be happy to walk you through the application process.

You better join the Teamsters, though, or I'll call you a scab!

My wife's got a Master's in Industrial Organizational Psychology. In her case, she went on to get an MBA in Marketing and Finance and is now doing quite well for herself as a Sales Forecast Manager for the Consumer Products category. I'd say the key in her case, though, was a talent for understanding the psychology of consumers as a group, combined with extensive statistical analysis.

We don't have any contacts in Atlanta or with management consulting, as far as I know, though.

To add to the pot, I've got a Master's in Biomedical Engineering, and an MBA in Finance. I work in operational finance for a large food manufacturer. My passions on the job are food supply and energy efficiency. I live and work in Northern New Jersey.

I wouldn't mind traveling or telecommuting, but otherwise I'm not overly interested in moving. That is not to say I wouldn't move, but it would have to be a really well paying dream job ot uproot myself and my spouse. This is more true for any of the bible belt states.

I appreciate the input though. ;-)

MBA or PHD is my next step, but In the mean time I have to pay the bills. I'd like to get experience and better pay while I do so. ;-)

Can you do that at night?

Which--throw boxes or call you a scab? Either way, the answer is "yes".

But, seriously,

Spoiler:
most buildings have twilight (5-10ish) and midnight (11-3 am) shifts. The money's not great at first, but the insurance is free--how long it takes to get it depends on where you live and which regional contract you're under.

Now is the worst time to apply for a job there, though. In a couple of weeks they'll be laying off all of the seasonal help and they won't hire off the street until they've called all the laid-off people back. They probably won't start hiring again until the spring.

EDIT: I forgot the preload shift because it's more of a morning than night shift (4-9am). A dollar more per hour AND you get to meet some crazy mo'fos.

Right on; just curious how it works.
