I'm new to the PBP world and am looking for a game to participate in (preferably a Pathfinder one). I thought I found one, but the game never got off of the ground.
I'm hoping one of you kind DMs has room for me in one of your PBP games, or will let me know of one that is starting up. It seems that when new games are announced here, I always notice the thread too late and miss out on getting in as a player.
I'd really like to get into one soon.
(Hmm...just reread this. I hope it doesn't come across as too desperate...)

Larry, if you like the idea of Nightflier's game, but you can handle a second game, then I have been considering running a game for a small group. While I've been gaming for years, I've only been pbping as a player for a couple of months. This would be my first time in the GM's chair, but I think I have enough of an idea how it works to try my hand.
I've just started a f2f game for a couple of people so can 're-cycle' that material - online it will last *much* longer! - so would aim to also do a pbp for 2 - 3 players. One thing I've found both over the years as a table-top gamer, and quickly through pbps, is that people don't necessarily fit together just like that (maybe this is why so many game are stillborn or die fairly quickly?). I'm happy to lay out what type of game I aim to run if you want to know more; if it doesn't float your boat then I absolutely understand if you say 'no thanks'.

I might not be the topicstarter, but I'm always interested in PbP games :)
What's f2f ?
Check out my Cemetery of Empires games.
Do you have a link to gestalt rules ?
It sounds nice, from what I've read in your OOC threads.-TDL

f2f = face to face ie actually sitting round a table.
I'll keep you in mind, but I don't want a big group hence why no open recruiting; I wouldn't really even have offered if these 2 posters hadn't said they had been unable to find a game anywhere else, and I was obviously feeling in a benevolent mood ;)
I'll wait and see if they (Larry and the poster from the other thread) get back to me. I might even be persuaded to run 2 small groups through the same stuff at the same time rather than have 1 big one. If so, and you are still up for it, I'll get back to you.

lol .. ahh .. thanks for the clarification :)
Sure thing, I'll see what happens. I just love PbP games, so I sign up for most of them :)

Grufflehead, this sounds perfect! Let me know more info (character creation rules, start date, etc.) when you can.
I Am IN!
grufflehead
OK Larry, glad to be able to offer - somebody did it for me once, maybe you'll pass on the karma yourself one day.
I'll wait and see if the other guy replies - I think he is on the other side of the world so may not have seen my reply yet. I'll have a think about a third person, and then we can start having some discussions about setting it up, what I'm looking to do, whether it suits everybody etc etc
grufflehead
Heh, you saw the bat signal ;)
OK, that's the pair of you signed up. I can cope with a third; I can do and open recruit unless either of you have come across any other waifs and strays who might also be interested?
I'd like to do some groundwork before we start to discuss the game a bit (and give you time to realise you've made a horrible, horrible mistake...). I try and do that in person for games as I have, in the past, run into issues like totally different wants/expectations from a game, disagreement over game style, system etc. Hope you don't mind a bit of back and forward before we start? Hopefully it will help make a game that we all enjoy and want to stay with.
You both said you wanted Pathfinder so no worries about game system. Next question, not directly game related, is what medium we use to play? Apart from these forums there are many other sites out there for pbps. From my perspective, playing 'here' has the following pros/cons for me:
Pros
- it's a great place, with lots of friendly people (although that applies to other sites too)
- the ability to make separate profiles is nice
- I can (until my IT dept get wise to it) check from work although I'm not expecting anything to be so urgent that I need to
Cons
- no PM's so everything has to be done out in the open or by e-mail
- not much in the way of other tools on the forum
Happy to listen to thoughts; if you have no issue then we stay here and make do with the way the forums work.
As far as the game itself goes, it will be reasonably 'generic' D&D. By that I mean it's not a single written adventure (although as we go on I will 'borrow' bits of games I own or have played), and it's not set in a specific campaign world. There will hopefully be a nice mix of RP, a bit of combat, some problems (both physical and moral!), and trying not to go too heavy on political shenanigans or Shakesperean prose.
To keep it manageable (and because I don't have a lot of the extra 3.5 material) I propose sticking to core Pathfinder as of the PFSRD (if you don't have the book, everything you need it here:)
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/
If any of the playtest classes are appealing, feel free to try one, although I'll probably make you make any alterations to the 'official' version once the Advanced Player's Guide is published.
Years of 3.5 (and AD&D before that) have convinced me the best levels to play are around 3 or 4 up to about 10 - 12. Pathfinder may help solve some of the high level bugbears, but I'm quite happy to keep the PCs from advancing to god-like levels by slowish progression. Likewise, unless you have a burning desire to play from 1st, I envisage starting you at 3rd or 4th so you can 'do' things. I may even adopt something like E6 (or variant) if that's the way you are happy to go - we won't have to make any decisions about that for a while anyway but for more about E6 go here:
http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-3rd-edition-house-rules/200754-e6-game-ins ide-d-d-new-revision.html
Posting wise, I'm online most days but I wouldn't expect more than 3 or 4 posts a week unless we are all really hooked. None of the games I have tried have been more frequent than this despite initial suggestions of 1 post per day. Much less than that and we may all find it just a bit too slow moving (which is another reason for keeping it to a small group - less players = less chance 1 person holds the show up).
How am I doing so far? Anything jumping out from that immediately? Suddenly realised you have to take that once in a lifetime trip to Outer Mongolia next week?
patha787
Sounds great to me - what you're saying makes a lot of sense in every respect.
I'd never heard of E6 before and would in honesty prefer to go without, but I'm an open-minded player, especially when it comes to anything that will improve the game and increase the level of fun. If you feel that E6 is the way to go, I'd certainly be willing to give it a shot.
As for whether we conduct the gaming here or elsewhere, I'm easy. If you're interested in other options, I can recommend starting a Yahoo group for this game; from my experience, it's nice to everything in one place exclusively dedicated to the game, you get a bunch of other features (like the ability to upload files) and so on. This option would require all players to have a (free) Yahoo account however, which may be too troublesome for some. Anyway, just an idea.
TDLofCC
I'm still interested, but if you want to keep it at 2 players I understand :)
I have a Paladin ready to go, which I made for another PbP but it has died after only 2 weeks because the GM got swamped with work in RL.
I can easily update him to lvl 3 or 4.
I just need to know how to do his stats etc.
Gamewise sounds fine. And I like these forums. But the missing PMs is a bit annoying.
3 or 4 times a week posting should be fine, but since I work behind a computer all day (sysadmin) I can post quite alot more :)
If you can handle me .. great. If not, good luck :)

Hi guys,
Gruffelhead, following your invit on my thread, I'd be delighted to play if you still have room.
I have the PF rules, and I'm online most days as well, so posting shouldnt be a problem for me. As I said, I am a complete newbie to PBP, but I'm sure it's loads of fun, and that we'll have a fine team together :)
Let me know. If room available, I'd love to play a sorcerer or spellcaster of some sort.
Talk soon.

I have a Yahoo account, so I'm up for that as well if that's the road we want to take. I don't have access to it until the evening however, while I can surf and post on Paizo at will.
Whatever the DM thinks is best.
grufflehead
I've also got a Yahoo account (which I can access at any time).
Moving the game there is actually not a bad idea, not only because of the increased options (another minor issue with here is the ability to go back and edit posts) but because it allows it to be 'open' enough that if we ever need an alternate player, they have all the old material available to catch up AND it's also 'closed' enough that if I ever want to run it again, I can do so with little worry that anyone will accidentally have read the plot!
I've never set up a Yahoo group before so might need a bit of help with that side of it, but if Larry gives it the thumbs up I say motion carried!
@TDLofCC - I feel bad about turning away a player but if you have other games and you don't mind not getting into this one, I'll stick with these 3 for now as they are all currently gameless. If it works (!) and I do decide to run it again, then you'll be first on my list for a spot

No problem at all there. I'm all for giving gameless people the opportunity to do some PbP ... since it's something all RPG people should have done ... :)
Good luck all.

Well, I'm very happy if we have a game. I am myself based in Ireland, so maybe there will be a time lag between our posts folks if you happen to be in America. Where are you all guys from?

That's part of the joy/curse of pbp. From what I can gather we have 2 on GMT, 1 in the US and 1 in NZ. That's why I didn't say '1 post per day or else' as with that sort of time difference it would be tricky unless we all had access all day.

Cool, an international game then, a bit like my usual gaming table then - we have 5 nationalities around the table :)
Can we create our characters ourselves, and if yes, what rules/guidelines do you want us to follow?

Certainly I hope you'll all create your own characters. I can be involved if you wish. I'm thinking I'll wait to see if Larry is happy going the Yahoo route and if so, post details of creation rules there, as it will also allow the players to chat amongst themselves, come up with shared idea etc - without PM that's a bit harder here.

This works. I have a Yahoo account, too. I'll just need some guidance on where to go for the game...
FYI, I'm in the US - Cleveland, Ohio area. It'll be fun gaming with you guys from around the world. I'm really looking forward to it!
As for character class, I'm thinking either Rogue or Cleric (or maybe multi-classing in both, since we're a smaller group). I'll need some deity info, though, since we're not using a set campaign world.

Yes, Paizo site. {dice}XdY+Z; next set{/dice}
replace the { and } with [ and ]. X is the number of dice, Y is the type of die (4, 6, 8, etc) and Z is the modifier.| grufflehead |
OK, for the sake of getting the game underway, let's start it here. Thanks to Fake Healer for showing us the dice roller; another alternative that people might like to use is Invisible Castle.
I'll create a thread in the appropriate forum for us to start game discussions. Meanwhile I'll look into creating a Yahoo group, and even if we stay on the boards for the game, it might give us more options for behind the scenes things.
I'll post when the thread is up, and include some details in that about character creation.
Meantime, although you said you were all new to pbp, I assume you've maybe glanced at a thread or two to see the general style? If not, dig in, there are lots of great games going on here. When I started I found this to be quite a good reference.

I've set up Yahoo groups before, so I could set one up and make you an admin if we all agree to take this road. Just let me know what you want me to call it.
In the meantime, I'm fine with starting it here to get things rolling, or staying here if that is the way we want to go. Thanks for the link to the wee article on PbP.
Hello and well met to all the other players, by the way - I look forward to adventuring with you all soon.

Sorry about that Vin.
Assuming we get up and running over the next week or so, *IF* it seems to be going OK, then give me a few weeks and I might think about running it again. If I do, then you and TDLofCC get first refusal on places as you enquired about it.
Just don't go reading the OOC (Grufflehead's campaign discussion) or the IC thread when it starts up!

That sounds great! I'll keep out of those threads just in case. If the group gels, and you decide to continue the group and add one or two more people, I'd be glad to jump in as well (a chance to be part of a group proven to be able to play nice together...who wouldn't want that opportunity!).

3? Pah, amateur! :p :p :p
There is looking like a very good chance I'm going to run it again. I think I've persuaded a guy I game with on another site to play, so you and Vin would give me my second group.
Will probably be a few weeks yet, so see how your current games go - if they are all still running and you don't feel you have the time I'll see if there are any other beginners struggling to find a game again and offer the last place to them.
Thanks again for the interest anyway

Paging VinGoodman!
One of my players has just been hit by real life and has had to drop out, just at the point I had created the in character thread!
As you expressed an interest previously would you like to join us? If so, the game details are in the OOC thread here:
In that thread you'll also be able to see the 2 existing PCs by clicking on their profiles.
Let me know, else I'll throw it open for someone else

Vin has accepted the last place so I'm full again I'm afraid.
If/when I get round to running it again (as it looks like I will) I'll see what your commitments are like if you want to play.

I too have a bunch of avatars for various failed games; if any is fitting or interesting; let me know. Sunset is a great player; would be fun be on the team. I am gming three pbp now, would be fun to actually play in one; am in like four that languish in nowhereland.
My Cemetery of Empires just lost a player, so you are welcome to join in if you don't mind gestalt rules. Also, I'm starting new game set in FFG's Midnight campaign setting. I have reached the limit of nine players, but you can keep an eye on it in case someone drops out.
