Famous Dragons (List)

Grand Lodge

Okay, I'm trying to compile a list of the most famous-est dragons from D&D. The ones that just about everyone knows.

1) Flame (Dungeon "Into the Fire" and two sequels)
2) Khisanth (DragonLance)
3) Brazemal (Greyhawk, various)
4) Gelid the White (Dungeon "The Ice Tyrant")
4) Klauth (FR)
6) Nightscale ("The Forge of Fury")
7) Hookface (SCAP)
8) Icingdeath (The Crystal Shard)
9) Ebondeath (FR, The Mere of Dead Men)
10)Ilthane (Dungeon, Age of Worms)

AoW Spoiler:
{Dragotha ("White Plume Mt." cover & AoW) and Lashonna (AoW) are Undead so I'm not counting them}

Who else? And, are these the top ten? I gotta be forgetting some bigger than Icingdeath, Ebondeath and Ilthane, maybe even Hookface.

Well, there is Skie from Dragonlance (Kitiara's Dragon) and Havarlan (Silver dragon Paladin from FR) that you might want to consider. And while not the most famous, Pyrite from Dragonlance was just fun. The senile, toothless gold that traveled with Fizbut, Furball, um......I knew his name yesterday guy.

Great AoW spoiler there ;)

Dark Archive

I'd suggest:

Ashardalon (most notably from Bastion of Broken Souls, although he was referenced in several other modules of that initial WotC series);

Calcryx (from Sunless Citadel, although possibly misspelled); and

a blue dragon whose name eludes me, but lived in the moathouse in Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. A real PC-killer, that one.

Grand Lodge

Ashardalon! Of course. (maybe #6 after Klauth)

And Skie, sure, why not -- I guess I just got "dragoned-out" with all the Dragons in DragonLance. But, yeah, Kitiara's is deserving.

Crap, sorry about the lack of a spoiler -- I flagged it.

Utreshimon is the Blue from Return to ToEE. I guess I didn't remember him because I eliminated him from the campaign when I ran it -- it just didn't feel right, fluff-wise, with the campaign I was trying to run. (I don't use a red dragon in Ravenloft for the same reason -- it just doesn't fit.) Also, Utreshimon isn't in the original; it's like Cook the Great was just trying to throw it in for effect.

Nonetheless, I know that, according to Dungeon116, "everyone" played through Return to ToEE and that would be an encounter that everyone remembers -- likely the first encounter for some groups in the whole campaign!

Anybody else have big memories of this Blue Dragon?

The Poisonous Cyan Bloodbane Green Dragon From Dragonlance.
Mistarpendacles Hai Draco Red Dragon From Azure Bonds
And of course Malystryx and of course cousin Beryl. Now how are a red and green cousins beats me.From Dragonlance
The Blue dragon Tempest who was Steele Brightblades mount. Dragnlance
And of course D'argent or Silvara the star struck Silver dragon from DragonLance as well.

Again from Dragonlance another remarkable red wyrm was Matafleur or Flamestrike as she was commonly known to mortals. This pitiful critter had gone abit senile thinking the human children of the slaves of Pax Tharkas were her children. Her draconic progeny had been slain eons ago at the end of the dragonwars. She managed to single handedly kill Pyros or Ember the stronger male red dragon sacrficing herself so her 'children 'could live.

Im surprised no one mentioned him Mahanotorian The Master of the Mountain. The huge red dragon from Elves of Evermeet, slain by Durothil the first Dragon Rider.

Synn, the female Red Dragon from the old D&D boxed set (BECMI)/ Rules Cyclopedia/ AD&D Mystara (and even the CAPCOM beat'em up 'D&D: Shadow over Mystara), who poses to be a Glantian noble (Dolores Hillsbury) while secretly trying to overthrow the government of Glantri and become the new ruler.

(in the beat'em up, her human appearance is more... juicy - think of Seoni with horns, you can have a look at her here)

Maya, the female Silver Dragon who is the lover of Sir Karl Gaardsen from the old SSI games 'Champions of Krynn' and 'Death Knights of Krynn'
(you can have a look at her human form here) - loosely based on Silvara, the female Silver Dragon who is the lover of Gilthanas (the brother of Laurana) in the Dragonlance Chronicles series.

Hmmm... I wonder why I remember only female dragons ;) ...

Dark Sun:
Borys of Ebe "Butcher of Dwarves"
Kalak of Tyr "Ogre Doom"

Synn, from the video game!

Oh, and Dunkelzahn! :-D

Spoilered.

Kazavon.

The Exchange

Was there not a big list like this in one of the final print additions of Dragon?

Shadow Lodge

I don't know about anyone else, but Matafleur(From Dragonlance Chronicles Volume 1), made a big impression on me. She did something decidedly good before her death, even if she was senile and didn't know it.

+1 for Matafleur!

Khyber, Sybris and Eberron.

Of course, how could I forget ! But it's Siberys, BTW.

Also... did anyone else noticed a 'change on gender' of the iconic Dragons of the Eberron Campaign Settings ? Except for Khyber (who was and still is considered female), I remember that in the first Eberron manuals, Siberys was described as female and Eberron as male... but in the last 3.5 products (I dunno about 4th ed - and I'm not even interested, BTW - ) I'm sure that they are described as 'Eberron = female, Siberys = male'...

Yeh the Big D kicks every other dragons backside - how many dragons become President of the United Canadian & American States. Unfortunately he is a Shadowrun Dragon, although Loftwyr gives him a run for his money.

In 4E Eberron and Khyber are usualy described as male and Siberys as female. They are also the primordial Dragons so their sex changes with culture and race.

Uh, so they changed AGAIN...

[sarcasm]
Khyber = the Mother of Fiends = male... sure, right...

Khyber just spits out bad 'seeds'.

Also not a D&D dragon but a shout out to Smaug from the Hobbit.

Liberty's Edge

In the Forgotten Realms novel Cormyr, the identify the basis of the Purple Dragon Heraldic Device. It is based on a great wyrm black dragon that ruled the area for centuries. His name was something atrocious, Tharmalaguous (sic).

He was so old, that the fringes of his scales were turning purple - hence the Purple Dragon of Cormyr.
