Same song and dance at Drivethrough.....I'll wait, as I never seem to have this problem with Paizo.

Lich, good thing to do as a caster asap ;)
Keeps you going even after death, no slowing down at all.

And after scraping off the last of the flesh.. or letting lil fishes do the nibbling, theres not even any of that smelling stuff.

Meanwhile gaining immortality, immunities to lots of stuff, waterbreathing (sort of), and a really nice touch that should help keeping others still.
Aura of da ResPect (fear) isnt all bad.

...too bad its so expensive tho.. but if getting lucky with the loot some day ;) Ofcourse guess who will get to the be the partys poison checker & traptriggerer after that..."go look if its dangerous" :D

Better make that d10 days regeneration into d10 hours. Keeps the rest from having to be idle everytime a trap or such turns out to be a bit too much.

..and as a summoner, be the penultimate outsourced sorcerous outsorcerer, on all things icky, slimy or dangerouslooking.

Nighttree: can you describe the error your getting so I can let them know about the problem?

It may be a lingering issue the traffic of the Haiti effort, but that's just a guess.

Ikki yeah a Restless soul definitely does not turn you into a bad@$$ lich.

It was designed to be +0 CR

On sale now at the Paizo Store

Got it.....first impressions ?

I am a bit disappointed.

The "fluff" is excellent, and the basic idea is great.

However the only way I would actually use this template in a game, was if in addition to the listed abilities, it changed your type to Undead.

A loss of two levels is simply not worth being spooky to animals, and access to a new chain of feats.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it

You don't loose two levels, you get two negative levels, which is what happens if someone uses raise dead (you all get one with ressurection) on you (these do not covert to level loss). Those negative levels can be removed, those are the penalty for dying. The idea was to let you come back quickly and still have a reason to want to come back to life, you don't have to wait for the cleric to prepared raise dead, ressurection, or carry your body back to town, you can come back and do it yourself.

If a PC was starting play as a Restless Soul (which I had not considered) I would remove the two negative levels at the start of play).

Quote:

This was my first inclination too, but we tried this any number of ways and it always ended up being broken or the drawbacks we created became too restrictive as an outside as an outsider you gain darkvision 60 feet and no longer need to sleep or eat,

Gaining the Undead Subtype by far grantes too many abilities.

Darkvision 60 feet.

• Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).

• Immunity to death effects, disease, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.

• Not subject to nonlethal damage, ability drain, or energy drain. Immune to damage to its physical ability scores (Constitution, Dexterity, and Strength), as well as to exhaustion and fatigue effects.

• Cannot heal damage on its own if it has no Intelligence score, although it can be healed. Negative energy (such as an inflict spell) can heal undead creatures. The fast healing special quality works regardless of the creature's Intelligence score.

• Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects or is harmless).

• Not at risk of death from massive damage

• Undead do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

It was just too much and when I whittled it down removing the immunities that were breaking the game I ended up with what being an outsider gave me.

So in the end I strived for balance, I think though when I do an update I will include some designer's notes and perhaps the negative levels should scale with level vs the raise dead, resurrection and true ressurection. Also I would include a notation about a if a player character starts as a restless soul DMs should remove the negative levels as they are there as a penalty for those who have died.

I am sorry you were disappointed, I hope this analysis helps, but I look forward to any suggestions you have as with a PDF we can always make changes and updates.

Your analysis does indeed help.

I think I need some time to make sure that my preconceptions of a "Revenant type" are not coloring how I look at it.

Yah! does the snoopy happy dance of joy!

You comments though do make me think about a paragon/prestige class perhaps that would add those types of abilities simliar to the way AE does oathsworn and the pathfinder monk. Maybe something for the Questhaven campaign setting or a Restless Souls web enhancement.

Hmmm...

Steve,

Can't you just append the contents as a revision to the PDF instead of putting up a web enhancement? It isn't like you're updating a hardcover. *shrug*

oh I will, but he webenhancement I get to give away for free :0

Think of it like LPjr previews its customers service and advertising all in one.

:) yes LPjr is a bad influence on me.

Hmmm...

Some of the feats already lean in that direction.....they are just a bit limited in usage, or come rather late.

Avenge my death, From hell (hate the evil requirement), and No last rights (I would rather Cha mod) are good examples of what I think when I think Revenant.

The restless ability allows for continuous return, at least if I'm reading it right ?

The feat Unsettling Wind keeps making me think of the Gully Dwarf feat “Gassy”....so that could maybe use a name change ;)

Now for a couple of questions.....

What is the DC to remove the negative levels after 24 hours ?

When it says "A restless soul creature returns with a
number of hit points equal to its current HD."

You mean if I'm a first level character, I return with 1 HP?

If so, do I heal back to my normal HP at the normal rate, or am I considered to only have 1 HP?

Quote:

Example?

Quote:

avenge my death is based on a revenant or as Hugo likes to call them "Crows"

From Hell is influenced by Like a Bad@SS out of hell rather than a revenant. Outcast from hell for being too evil. I guess one could change this up and make it effective for any phyilosphy, kicked out of heaven, limbo, beyond etc.

No Last Rites: well Constitution is the stat that affects your hit points.

This also deals with if your entire party takes this they will all reach full health about the same time

Where if it was Charisma you could have a Barbarian with a Con of 25 and a Cha of 13 and getting back to full health would take forever vs the sorcerer who has very few hit points who is at full health after a few rounds

Its tempting to make it charisma but would want to see it playtested before I would make such a change.

The template only with GM permission, a gm is not required to allow you to come back, the feat soul jar is similar to the requirements for lichdom and if you destory the soul jar your gone. A GM could even give a restless soul his own crow "soul jar" if he wanted :)

Quote:

No matter what you call it a player can make fun of it, but i will look into it.

Quote:

"Restless souls gain two PERMANENT negative levels when it returns to the land of the living,"

Just as with raise dead and ressurection you don't get a save (so no DC) it functions as if you had already failed the saving throw, you have to go get them removed by restoration.

Yes exactly like Raise Dead

I tend to have a knee jerk when it comes to feats that allow you to do something one time per day.

Don't get me wrong....I like most of the feats, and using some of the Tomb born feats from Libris Mortis, in concert with the feats you created for the Restless get's me pretty close to what I'm shooting for.
Some of my "me want's" are probably not really balanced.....for example....."me wants" fast healing NOW.....not at 13th level :P

Qwilion wrote:

I guess I'm just looking at it more from the angle of someone who refuses to die....to me that say's Charisma....but it's by no means a biggie.

That was nothing more than an attempt at humor....unfortunatly I'm just not funny :(

And that's just me being dense....which is what I get for thinking about this during breaks from doing the stores taxes ;)

I tend to have a knee jerk when it comes to feats that allow you to do something one time per day.

all of the feats give you the option to take the feat again and gain an additional use per day, and the majority of these feat uses are swift actions, and do more than the say a spell effect would normally do.

Quote:
Some of my "me want's" are probably not really balanced.....for example....."me wants" fast healing NOW.....not at 13th level :P

Well your admit you like your Rule of Cool and Rule of Fun more than you are worried about the elusive unicorn known as "balance." Its the fundamental drawback of proffesional design I can't design the product specifically for you, I have to design it for the Rules AS Written.

The big problem with fast healing is that it makes every HP healing spell redundant at least regeneration still requires you to use natural or other healing spells to recover from lethal damage. So, Yeah I want it before 13th level too.

Quote:
someone who refuses to die....to me that say's Charisma....but it's by no means a biggie

yet the flavor of the feat is intended to be, I cam back because you desecrated my body.

What you should have said was that the Restless Souls are thematically tied to undead and they use Charisma to affect their HP in the Pathfinder Rpg, then you might have persuaded me that it shoulld be Con or Cha :)

Quote:

Nope, I could have used an example to show how this worked when applied to a character, sometimes you run afoul of the author efficiency.

Plus I am here for clarification.

Er....that's right.....what you said.....

Is it to late for me to act like it was my brilliant argument ?

(sigh) ;)

hey a 4 out of 5 star featured review at Drivethrurpg

I think the reviewer read these posts :)

Just thought I would note that with only 7 days of sales Restless Souls has outsold Wyrd of Questhaven.

I guess people really like playing the character they have :)

How far before it catches up to the Ironborn?

My initial thought on this one was less about individual deaths, but as a way to keep some campaign continuity if you have a TPK, i.e. having the whole party come back as Restless Souls. I'm still mulling this over, but its great food for thought.

Urizen

It would need to sell another 24 copies, but right now the Ironborn sells about 1 copy for every 3 restless souls sold so it will be a tight race.

We will have to see what happens.

KnightErrantJR

That was a thought I had as well.

One adventure seed after a TPK was to haven them roleplay getting out of the after life (in mine you have to argue with the Judge of the Dead), coming back as Restless Souls. Then the have to carry thier bodies back to a temple to get raised, along the way they have to overcome obstacles like grave robbers, necromancers who animate thier dead bodies, and "knights" who think they are undead or evil outsiders "My mount sense your unnatural state!"

Next time I have a TPK this will happen :0

Still waiting for the Paizo review of this product lol :)

4 out of 5 star review from KnightErrantJr at the Paizo store.

Restless Souls is #9 on the RPG Countdown (Snoopy Happy Dance of Joy!) so go over and have a listen I am the second tract in :)

I have to say that Restless Soul, and the Death mage, are probably two of my favorite products at the moment.

Keep up the good work ;)

Well, congrats on what appears to be a well received publication!

How do you go about getting your stuff published? I have a few ideas for supplements I would love to buy - but no one made - so perhaps I need to write them myself :p

Is there a go-to guide?

Thank you

There are a few guides, if you want to be self published, Rite Publishing will be doing an open call patronage project where we will help produce a customers dream project.

You also might look at the day in the life of a 3PP thread.

Thanks for the tip offs.

I will cruise on over to that thread and have a look, and look forward to having a look at how your patronage project comes together.

Are you going to do one for your Questhaven campaign or is this just anything in general?

Fascinating read Qwill!

Although at the end of the day I think I'd be happy writing content, and then getting someone to tidy it up and produce. For me it's more about the journey and getting it done :p

Its going to be open call, though I will be pitching a Questhaven project when Coliseum Morpheuon is done.

Qwilion wrote:

I'll be keeping my eye out for that one. :)

Baleful Gaze question ?

The feat text states "A number of times per day (see table
below) for 1 round per day, any opponent within
60 feet that meets your gaze must succeed on a
Fortitude save"

However the table does not list a number of times per day (at least clearly).....

Is it 1/day for each level of the table ???

sorry a flub in the text (it was changed after play-testing) should have read 1/day period. If you take the feat a second time you get an additional use.

Rite Publishing wrote:

Ah....I thought it seemed strange that it broke the pattern of other feats in the book.

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

How the heck did I miss this release?

Sold. I will review it when I get a chance.

Hmmm...

Just had to run with this idea ;)

So I thought I would throw out what I have so far and see what peeps think.

10 level Revenant PrC.
Good BA, Fort and Will.
HD ???
Skills ???
Skill points ???
Prerequisites: Restless soul template, BA +5, beyond that ???
Advances existing spell casting on all but 1st, 5th, & 9th level.

1st level Specials:
Tenacious Soul (Ex): You are a tenacious combatant, continuing to fight when others would succumb to pain and injury, you continue to fight without penalty if you are disabled or dying.
Deny Death (Ex): You gain additional hit points equal to your character level. When your hit point total drops below 0, you
automatically stabilize. You don’t die from hp loss until you reach a number of negative hp equal to or greater than Constitution score + ½ your total level.

2nd level Specials:
Avenging Strike (Ex): You can attempt an avenging strike as a swift action on an enemy who has dealt damage to you or an ally.
The avenging strike must be delivered with a melee attack . You can add your Charisma modifier (if positive) to your attack roll, and deal an extra +2 damage per Revenant level you possess to all damage rolls against the target.
Avenging Strikes automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.
You can use Avenging Strike once per day per point of Charisma bonus (minimum 1/day).
At 6th level you can deliver an Avenging strike with a ranged attack.

3rd, 6th, & 9th level Specials:
Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.

Still need abilities for 4th, 5th, 7th 8th, & 10th levels.....Ideas ?

If I was doing this I would steal an idea from Stan! and his work on Super Genis Games Order of Vigilance.

I would have three prestige classes one for martial characters, one for spells casters, and one for skill based characters.

When the character comes back from death he can supplement his class levels for levels in this prestige class (knowledge and gifts from beyond the veil).

The Timeless Order of Revenants.

BAB poor, sorcerer saves, full spell progression

BAB medium, rogue saves, sneak attack progression or bard, cleric, druid, spell progression.

BAB Good, fighter saves, regeneration like the crow :)

But I am just brainstorming here.

Are you thinking one class, with different progressions depending on how you choose to build the character and it's class used to enter (like the Godling) ???

Or three seperate PrC ?

Also came up with a few more potential abilities....

5th level:
Born again and again (Su): The Revenant may come back to life as the Resurrection spell once per week, but with the following exceptions. If the Revenant comes back to life instantaneously, then the character gains no negative level, and continues their actions normally (DM's approval required).
If the Revenant comes back to life one or more rounds later, then the character gains 1 permanent negative level as the mortal coil takes hold on their soul. The Revenant cannot have been dead for longer than 10 years per level of Revenant.

8th level:
Resilient Spirit (Su): At 8th level, a Revanant becomes immune to all death spells, magical death effects, energy drain, and negative energy effects.

10th level:
Never Say Die (Su): At 10th level, a Revenant can come back to life as the True Resurrection spell (instead of Resurrection) Coming back to life takes place wherever most of the Revenant’s remains are located (if any).

I was also thinking it may be fun to design a "Ritual" that someone who has some of the Revenants remains could use to trigger their Born, again, & again, or Never say die ability.

Yes like the godling.

Rite Publishing wrote:
Yes like the godling.

Hmmmm....I'll give that some thought.

I think I'd rather do one class, that any base class can take....but that may just be laziness talking ;)

As soon as I have this fleshed out a bit more, I'll post some ideas to the homebrew section.

Just be sure to link me :)

Rite Publishing wrote:
Just be sure to link me :)

Here ya go ;)

Edit:...never mind.
I can't figure out how to do the LINK thingy :(

I just started a thread in homebrew.

I'm struggling with two possible different routes to take.

Option #1: more or less work with the existing Restless Soul mechanic, but sets a consistent mechanic for their return to the land of the living, and slowly decreases the penalty they take (permanent negative levels) when they return.....

1st level: Tenacious Soul (Ex): A revenant’s existence is fueled by its undying hatred for the creature it holds responsible for it's murder*. As long as this creature exists, the revenant exists. If the creature is killed, the revenant immediately drops to the ground and is destroyed as well. Note that a living murderer who becomes an undead creature does not trigger a revenant’s death. If a murderer is brought back to life after dying (or later becomes an undead creature), the revenant returns to life as well. The Revenants return to the land of the living follows the same rules as his initial acquisition of the Restless soul template.

5th level: Never say die (Su): When using his Tenacious Soul ability, the revenant returns to life as the Resurrection spell. The character gains 1 permanent negative level (instead of two).

10th level: Eternal Nemesis (Su): At 10th level, a revenant returns to life as the True Resurrection spell (instead of Resurrection: see Never say die) Coming back to life takes place wherever most of the Revenant’s remains are located (if any).

Option #2: this option uses Regeneration to keep the Restless Soul "alive" until it's murderers are destroyed, and gives it the classic regenerating revenant feel. However it takes care of the whole shabang in one ability, and possibly makes a ten level PrC uneccesary (probably could be reduced to a five level PrC).
Still not sure what I think of this from a "balance" perspective ?

Nemesis (Ex): A revenant’s existence is fueled by its undying hatred for the creature responsible for it's murder. As long as this creature exists, the revenant exists. The Revenant gains Regeneration X, and the destruction of it's murderer is the only way to bypass it's regeneration.
Regeneration is dependent on hit dice as follows R/2 (1-3 hit dice), R/3 (4-7 hit dice), R/4 (8-11 hit dice), R/5 (12+ hit dice).
Note that a living murderer who becomes an undead creature does not trigger a revenant’s death.
If a murderer is brought back to life after dying (or later becomes an undead creature), the revenant returns to life as well, following the normal rules for the Restless Soul template.

Yet another "fly in the ointment".....

I was going through the Restless Soul template in detail, and noticed that it is already built in that if you return again as a Restless Soul....you only take one negative level (or point of Con dmg).

So the progression I was working out in option one, needs re-working.

Round...two......

Here is the re-work after looking things over in a bit more detail.

Prerequisites: Restless Soul template, BA +5.
Feats:Avenge my death, Wrath from Beyond,
BA: 3/4
Saves Good Ref & Fort, poor Will ???
HD: D8

1St level
Tenacious Soul (Ex): A revenant’s existence is fueled by its undying hatred for the creature it holds responsible for it's murder*. The Revenants return to the land of the living follows the same rules as his initial acquisition of the Restless soul template, taking one additional negative level or point of constitution drain, but retains it's full hit points (adjusted for the negative level or constitution drain). In addition, you continue to fight when others would succumb to pain and injury, you continue to fight without penalty if you are disabled or dying, when your hit point total drops below 0, you automatically stabilize. You don’t die from hp loss until you reach a number of negative hp equal to or greater than Constitution score + ½ your total level, and you gain additional hit points equal to your character level.

Reason to hate (Su): A revenant’s driving goal is to confront its murderers and slay them. When you are engaged in battle with an opponent you know has killed you (subject to DM Adjudication) or its allies, you gain a +2 moral bonus on all Bluff, Perception, Sense motive, attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, CM/D checks, and saving throws.
This bonus increases to +4 at 5th level, and +6 at 10th level.

2nd level:

Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can now be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.

3rd level:
Sense Murderer (Su): A revenant can use locate creature at will (CL 20th), but only against the being/s that murdered it. Against its murderer, a revenant has true seeing and discern lies in effect at all times (CL 20th); these abilities cannot be dispelled.

4th level:
Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can now be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.

5th level:
Eternal Nemesis (Su): At 5th level, a revenant returns to life as the True Resurrection spell (instead of Resurrection), and suffers no negative levels, or Constitution drain. Coming back to life takes place wherever most of the Revenant’s remains are located (if any).
Reason to hate +4.

6th level:
Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can now be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.

7th level:
Resilient Spirit (Su): At 7th level, a revenant becomes immune to all death spells, magical death effects, energy drain, and negative energy effects.

8th level:
Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can now be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.

9th level:
blank....still need something ???

10th level:
Bonus Restless soul feat: You may choose a bonus “Restless Soul” feat. In addition, any Restless Soul feat that grants an ability usable 1/day, can now be used a number of times per day equal to your total number of Restless Soul feats.
Reason to Hate +6.
