Prestige Classes and Monk Abilities

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Some PrC built for Monk characters typically allow the class to combine with Monk for increase for unarmed damage, AC bonus, unarmored speed, and rarely flurry of blows.

I would like to ask the Pathfinder developers what else would be appropriate to include in this "package"? Would ki points go up or is that solely Monk level? What about BAB for Flurry of Blows and CMB from Maneuver Training ability?

It'd be much appreciated, thank you.

Making a prestige class that simply is an improvement over the old one is boring, and a bad fix to the class in my opinion.

@stringburka: I think what he's getting at is the old 3.5 prestige classes that don't account for the different types of monk progression in Pathfinder.

Maneuver training is technically a bonus feat that uses your total level, not your monk level, so that doesn't need to be changed.

The only thing that really needs to be added in my opinion to fix the 3.5 monk PrC's to Pathfinder is the flurry of blows BAB. I played a level 15 character that was using an old PrC so I had the DM add the FoB progression and it worked just fine.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Some PrC that were obviously built mainly for Monk characters had a 1st-level ability called "Monk Abilities" where the levels stacked for AC, speed, and unarmed damage (there were maybe 2 or 3 that allowed Flurry of Blows stacking). With Pathfinder Monk and the same PrC, I am wondering what else should stack and thought maybe the Maneuver Training and Flurry should also stack?

Well Maneuver Training is different than the Pathfinder feat because the feat adds your character level as a bonus whereas Maneuver Training only adds your Monk level.

The Grimoire Viperian has several monk prestige classes (all snake-themed):

Cobra Master:

Cobra masters are monks who have studied the ways of the cobra, seeking to emulate its speed, lethality, and the psychological effects it has on its prey. Cobra masters must undergo intense physical training to acquire the speed of a cobra, and they must train their minds to achieve the supernatural ability to hypnotize their opponents. A cobra master’s unarmed attacks can inflict terrible damage as he learns to target the vital spots of his enemy’s anatomy, inflicting great pain. Eventually, the cobra master’s incredible mental discipline allows him to control his body to the point where it can actually generate toxins and transfer them to an opponent on contact.

Python Master:

The python master is a monk who has studied the ways of the python and who seeks to emulate its great strength, natural armor, and its ability to completely incapacitate its prey by grappling. This requires complete dedication to a rigorous physical training routine, as well as mental and spiritual training. Eventually, the mind of the python master becomes so enlightened and disciplined that he is actually able to assume the form of a python.

Silent Adder:

This is a prestige class designed for a multi=class monk with levels of rogue, ninja or assassin, who gains proficiency with the kusari-gama as well as several other rogue/ninja/assassin-like abilities. The Silent Adders are a secret society of monks. They are devoted to studying the ways of the adder, admiring its combination of stealth and swift, debilitating, poisonous strikes. Most simply strive to hone their combat skills to lethal perfection, forming a deadly harmony of body and mind. Some are obsessed with ideals or their own rigid philosophy, and roam the land seeking ever greater challenges and enlightenment. Still others are attracted to worldly pleasures and power, or are driven by revenge, and often form their own assassin clans or offer their services as elite spies, agents or assassins to those whom they deem to be worthy and profitable patrons.

DriveThruRPG and Paizo both sell the Grimoire Viperian PDF.

It may be interesting to have a few PrC's that use various Monk-ish abilities. Not a single that that stacks with monk, that'd be pointless, but rather classes that use Monk Ablities.

One that Grants a FoB kind of mechanic that does not stack with TWF that does stack with Monk FoB.
Ki pool (also works with Ninja)
Unarmed Damage
Fast Movement
AC bonus.

Add features of classes that monk would work well with, some kind of martial-artist inquisitor, or something.

But it's got to do something totally un-monk-like, and not significant' better than monk.

I think it would depend a lot on what new abilities are added by the monk PrC. Some PrCs might continue to advance in some of the monk abilities, while leaving others behind. It's a trade off -- you get some new abilities the core monk class doesn't have but in exchange you sacrifice advancement in others.

I wouldn't design a monk PrC that continues on in all the core monk abilities or there wouldn't be a point in playing a straight monk.
