I was just wondering what the rationale was to make previous years top 8 not eligible for this years competition? Where the top 8 not considered "new" design talent? While I can see the winner being excluded( they are going to be published in a paizo product ), but was less definite on the runners up.

Aye, I was curious about this as well. The competitive side of me would prefer to match my abilities against everyone including those who have already proven themselves.
While I understand the sense of fair play, I think I would have preferred to see all as eligible. Of course throughout the year, I am sure that many of the top competitors are/were tapped for one project or another.

One of the motivations for this contest is to give designers a chance to show the editors at Paizo what they are capable of. By the time we make it to the Top 8, we've given a reasonable sample of our work and it is time to let others have a chance.

I believe it is because the contest is mostly about finding new talent. While being in the top 8 doesn't automatically mean that one will be published anywhere, I think it is enough to make that contestant found and that for later years, they would prefer to see new contestants rather than people that were already known.
Or what Trevor said.

Of course, this doesn't mean we wouldn't love a second chance at the prize, right Joshua? ;-)

Joshua and Trevor: I admire that you both respect the decision and abide by it. It speaks to your character.
On the other hand, it doesn't leave much room for the possibility for people to learn, grow, and evolve as writers. I really feel sorry for you in that respect.
This is only tangentially related: One reason I couldn't bring myself to come down too hard on some people who got upset with the judges, is that I've been there before. In the first year I got kinda upset. I didn't tell the judges off completely, but I found myself being really critical of their decisions in regards to other contestants. Maybe I was the very first “RPG Superstar” hothead for all I know. Erik, Clark, and Wolfgang all talked me down. They were really nice but also firm in how they arrived at their decisions. It took me awhile, but I came around. My own Wondrous Item just wasn't that good on some levels and I needed to recognize that and come to terms with it. Then I could start to learn what exactly did make a good Wondrous Item. I'm really sorry for how I acted that first year, but I'm grateful for a second chance. Folks don't always get the 'lesson' until they've had a chance to sit with it for awhile and get it over their disappointment. Then the proverbial light bulb above the head switches on and they can step back and look at everything objectively. Even if I don't go anywhere in the contest, at least I'll have a chance to learn again. Then maybe one day all that learning will come to something, like getting published.
I realize that whole paragraph was about me and not you. What I'm trying to say is, part of me thinks that if *I* deserve a second chance then so do you.
Of course, I abide by Paizo's rules just as you do. In fact, I admire the example you're setting.

I did make a push for a 'Superstar of Superstars' contest on *this thread* with all profits from the resultant module to go to charity, and someone from Paizo said that they'd think about it...

Thanks Watcher, but I'm not waiting for a second chance. I've been really busy with a new and exciting job. (I applied for the job during the contest last year and got an interview shortly thereafter.) Once I get more established here, I'll try submitting some things to Paizo or Kobold Quarterly.

To be honest, you were just disappointed, and you expressed it. There's no harm in that ;>
Linky to this shameful episode? ;-)
EDIT: Never mind, just joking.
I was searching for it already ;>, there is some on the migrus thread, but I think he's winding down there ;>

There is the Grievous Wailer you've got in some contest or other. ;)

I'd be all over something that let me be creative and gave money to charity. I'd especially be excited if that charity connected somehow to schools and reading -- for example, a fundraiser that put Planet Stories in the hands of young readers at schools with under-funded libraries.
