Question for the boards.
Catalyst games recently lowered the price of their core rules PDFs to $15
Low enough for me to buy them. Now I commented in the message boards:
"Prime.
Not quite Paizo prices, but I'll take 'em. :-)"
Just wondering if that was provoking. The next reply was definately insulting:
"Of course they're not Paizo prices; you're paying for quality.
Even though I already own them all, I'm excited by the news."
Well I was insulted by the slam at another company (since I didn't see mine as a slam). Did I provoke?
Full disclosure, here's my reply to the poster:
Watch it buddy boy, I'm still planning to get my (25th) 26th anniversary boxed set for Battletech after all. I'll put Paizo's shipping and quality and release schedule against Catalyst any day of the week.
The price point is now low enough that I've bought the PDFs just to have them on DVD to read at work. I just wish that Catalyst had a subscription system like Paizo does. It's nice to have complimentary PDFs of the work, and I'd be first in line to sigh up, even though I play/read/write Pathfinder RPG stuff a heck of a lot more often than I do Battletech.
Just wish I could play tabletop battletech more often.
And please, no one go flame the catalyst boards, it was a comment from a member, not a writer or someone who works for Catalyst.

On those boards? Who knows. The people there can be odd at times and take offense and offer it rather quickly. Like people anywhere they are quick to defend what they see as "theirs" from outside attack and are quick to perceived such attacks where they may not be intended... it happens here some too.
I have something I try to remember before speaking to people I think are trying to insult or cause trouble for me -- "Never assume maliciousness for what incompetence or ignorance can explain."
However it is good to know that the PDF's are available... I might have to look into that (when I got some cash).

You kinda did. Remember that you were in their house. Imagine working at a comic book store you own, with a bunch of your loyal regulars hanging out, and some customer comes in and says,"This a good price. Not quite what I sometimes get from the comic book store around the corner, but I'll take it." I'm sure you and your regulars wouldn't appreciate it. My rule of thumb for consumer etiquette is to take something or leave it. There is nothing wrong with comparison shopping or trying to make a deal, but the kind of comment you made was mildly insulting.

I don't think it was an obvious insult but I do see how it could be taken that way, especially if that poster has had a difficult day.

Actually, that doesn't seem all that annoying. Maybe it's just me.

<scratches option #279 from the Possible Ways to Make a Ginormous Amount of Money list>
Opinions are pretty cheap and so are ideas.
Seriously though, personally I don't feel it was a statement that should have been taken as a confrontational. I can, however, see how it may have been taken as such. It all really on the frame of mind of the reader at the time they read it.
Ah they joys of the clarity of on-line communication! ;)

Given the context of where you say that you were posting, the initial post which you mention seems to me that it might be read as being mildly patronising or otherwise taken the wrong way... Especially if the :-) gets overlooked, misunderstood, or ignored.
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
