Getting rid of Google, incidentally, would seem to be exactly what China wants. They want their corporations in charge, not ours, and not multinationals, and this is especially so in the case of media.
I have a hard time visualizing the internet without Google's search engine. My initial reaction is that right now, China needs the internet (and Google) as much as they need them. Just walking away could seriously hurt both.
How soon could China reverse engineer something like Google search? I have a feeling it's pretty difficult. Otherwise Bing and all the other competitors would have done it a long time ago.

Yeah, I'd agree. The Patriot Act is one of the reasons I really disliked the Bush administration (well that and they were bizarro images of my style of conservatism). I told people before that once government gets that kind of power, it can only expand. I'm not sure what the status of it is, but I don't hear a lot of talk about abolishing it anymore. It's a tempting tool no matter WHO is sitting in the Oval Orifice.
One thing that makes me happy is that we do have open debate here, and we can use our votes to enact change. It may not be the perfect system, but it beats the pants off of any government organized along communistic lines.
