Rules for why threads get moved?

Website Feedback

I do not see a sticky anywhere with the general rules regarding this. I do not understand what causes a thread to get moved to the archives. I can understand a thread not being posted in for several days or a few weeks getting moved, but I posted in an active thread last night and when I went to look for the thread to see any new posts, I had to go through my message history just to find it is now in the archives for the forum it is in. Why does this happen?

What thread is it?

I think it has to do with the number of threads that are more recent than a given thread, rather than the thread's own activity. Some forums' most recent threads are weeks or months old and yet those threads are not archived, while other forums have such a flurry of activity that they are moved to the archives simply by being pushed out by newer threads. At least that's how I understand it to work.

This thread here.

And now it seems to be in the normal section again and with a new post on it. So either I had some serious issues finding the thread and it was never archived or someone moved it back or it moved back automatically because of the new post. Which brings up something else I wondered about the older threads that have been archived. When you necro one of those threads, does it stay archived for no one to see your new post or does it get bumped back into the active threads again?

It gets bumped back to the active threads.

Yoda is right: a thread is archived based on how many other active threads are in its forum, not based on its own activity.

Generally, this means that the first page of thread in a forum (usually 100 threads) are active, and the remainder are archived. If you post in an archived thread, it becomes unarchived.

Cool. I will have to look through the archived threads and see what is interesting and needs another viewpoint or questions that look unanswered that I can contribute to.
