Any reason for only one Bonded Object?

Liberty's Edge

Why can't I make a back up bonded object like I could with a spell book. At low levels it takes the wizard out of play for a week in game time. If you're worried about everything being a bonded to a wizard why not pose a limit like lets say after the third one of your bounded reverts back to ordinary.

Also one more thing if I choose an existing magic amulet does it become an ordinary amulet (w/o the orignal magical properties) if I decided to switch my Bonded item?

My understanding of reading arcane bond is that the bond is persistent with either the object or the creature (familiar).

It seems to me it would be helpful to think of it in terms of the object being your familiar and as such, there is only one. Your precious, or whatever.

Similarly per the SRD:

If a bonded object's owner dies, or the item is replaced, the object reverts to being an ordinary masterwork item of the appropriate type.

So I read that as saying your amulet is an amulet...I suppose I also read that as your backup strips the original.

Edit: Unless you are saying the amulet was magical in the first place. If it was, say, an amulet of natural armor and you bonded it and upgraded it but then replaced it, then it would revert back to being a amulet of natural armor.

If you are asking "why don't they let me have a spare bonded object" (which is what I think you are asking, but I'm not sure), then its because you have to have some kind of penalty to go with the fairly substantial mechanical boon the Bond gives you.

You can enchant it without the require feats /and/ you can use it to cast 1 spell you know, per day, from your spell book. That's no minor deal. To compensate for that- if you lose it then you are hosed for a week.

At least, that's my .02.
