Ailyn Ghontasavos

Council of Thieves

Do I have to wait until What Lies in Dust to take a glimpse on Ailyn's stats, or did I've missed a thread on this forum?

Is she an "original" Pathfinder Chronicler prestige class NPC or did she take levels in one of the new prestige classes from Seekers of Secrets (Pathfinder Delver or Pathfinder Savant)?

I feel more "secure" portraying a NPC if I have some "numerical background". ;)

Still nothing in What Lies in Dust...

Hmm...

I'm guessing you'll have to stat her up yourself if you want to use her.

The thing I don't get in What Lies In Dust:

Spoiler:
Why wouldn't she want to accompany the PCs into Delvehaven, since she's the only Pathfinder agent in town?

Ah, wait, I found the explanation in Sixfold Trial.

I find the explanation 'moderately satisfactory' - of any group in Golarion that is not of Evil bent, the Pathfinder Society as I recall expects initiative by its members. It takes months for mundane means of communication to traverse the distances across Avistand, let alone Garund. Ailyn if anything is using non-Society members as trap springers/mice in the maze. Worst case, they go in, die horribly and she rounds up another posse of suckers ... er, "adventurous heroes" - such as the remaining Children of Westcrown - and sends them on in too.

Which is rather spiffy in my book. ^_^

Spoiler:
What I hope to address are two things.

First, the lack of the promised reward for 'securing the contents of the Chelish Crux' (PF#26, page 9). Presuming the characters do not crowbar the Crux open, am I correct in designating the forking over of the wands and scrolls as the 'handsome reward'? (It is - especially the wands and one of the scrolls - of significant value at this point in the character's careers. Combined with the value of the loot to be acquired from The Wave Door and from the corpses of the six Sisters at Massacre House, this may be enough. I would highly recommend rewording Ailyn's 'promise' to them as regards the Chelish Crux when you run Chapter 2 for your own groups.) As things stand, I will have to come up with something to reward the player characters when the campaign resumes.

Second, the requirement mentioned in Chapter 2/#26 - that an investigation of Delvehaven is to be sanctioned by the Society - seems to be missing in Chapter 3/#27. Only the aforementioned investigation(s) to find out the fates of the five deceased Pathfinders has the air of Society legitimacy that came across as necessary in Chapter 2. I intend to phrase Ailyn's request to the PCs in such a way as to convey the Society's interests. Of course, it could be that Ailyn is jumping the shark and operating under the maxim "better to beg forgiveness than ask permission", yet to be revealed in Chapter 4. These seems doubtful, since she is set to depart the day after she gets the report and proof from the (surviving) player characters.

I think I'll bait some of my players into becoming aspiring Pathfinders. This will make it more likely for them to "obey" her plot advancing.

Of course, the REAL reason she doesn't accompany the PCs is because that's not something that's necessarily fun for all groups. The game should be about the players, not NPCs who are comparably as powerful as the PCs who help them out.

That said, if you think the PCs need the extra help, by all means have her go along with them!

But since the adventure doesn't expect that, she got no stat block and we used that space for other content.

I imagined the real reason, and by far will I let Ailyn accompany the PCs. But I feel a little "more secure" on the story-telling side if I know what Ailyn's stats and powers are, because - as usual - my players ask a lot of stuff and have quite high scores in "Sense Motive"...

Usually, they ask something like: "How have you accomplished this, Ms N.P.C.?... Why didn't you do that, Mr V.U.P., that's your main power/spell/characteristic?..."

If I don't come up with a plausible answer on the fly, the players get the impression that the NPC is unimportant/boring/ineffective.
Sometimes, I can lend a little extra help to the PCs by letting the NPC casting a spell on them or something like that.

So, I made Ailyn Ghontasavos a ...
