I created a local gaming group with some friends and we have met once a week for the last 9 years. We are currently in playing the RotRL campaign. Reality has reared it ugly head and I might have to relocate to 300 miles away because of employment opportunity. I would like to keep the campaign going. I was thinking we could game online.
Therefore, my questions are:
What tools do people uses to role-play online?
Can you give me hint on how to do it successfully?

Free, fully-featured, awesome, getting better all the time.
It's system agnostic, but has a vibrant community of users developing for nearly any system you can think to play.
Java-based, so it is platform-independent, which is a real boon if you have a mix of wintel, mac and/or *nix in your group.
I faced a situation like yours, where my group was suddenly in three timezones. I am pleased to report that since we started with maptool (and skype), we actually play more and have more fun than we did in face-to-face games.

I currently GM two adventure paths( Curse of the Crimson Throne and Second Darkness) at http://www.macrayskeep.com
Basic memberships are free. full memberships are about 30 a year. It has a large amount of features for GMing and being a player. There is a training game (called The Pit) that you can join and test out all the features. There are rewards for active games such as granting one player in the game a free month and granting a non-Inner Circle (the membership) GM full GM menu access.
Let me know if you want more details on it. I was introduced to it by my girlfriend (also a GM there )last year and I love it.

I've run (And am prepared to run again) PFS #11 (The third riddle) with Maptool from Rptools.net, and I've played on someone else's table of PFS 8 (Slave pits of Absolom) using TtopRPG...both free. There's a google group for people interested in running and/or playing in online PFS that I highly recommend for both advice and for scheduling/gathering players/finding DMs, at http://groups.google.com/group/pathfinder-society-online-collective?hl=en&a mp;lnk=
