Very cool! How do you decide how much you'll charge for a product?

I haven't actually sold anything yet, but...

It depends on things like licensing, how long it is, and how much development it needed to bring to light.

For example, for something short like a 4-page Trophy Dark incursion, I'll probably charge $2 for the PDF.

Something longer like an 8-page Trophy Gold incursion, I'll probably set at $5.

For a full rules-light RPG like Naked City Blues (which I expect will come in between 12 and 20 pages), I'll probably set at $10.

And anything that requires use of a specific license that would require me either paying a licensing fee or hiring an attorney to make sure I'm in compliance will be priced accordingly.

Also: Given some recent changes to the language around Paizo's Community Use Policy, I intend to file off any Paizo IP serial numbers before making anything Pathfinder-adjacent available. [For example, I'll be pulling out any direct references to Sandpoint, Thistletop, Ripnugget, or Shalelu from any future revisions to "The Toadstool Goblins."] This would mean both that I could sell it, and that I don't think I'd be setting myself up for any "cease and desist" legal notices if I post it alongside products I want to put a price tag on.

Hey, everyone! Barring someone dropping a COVID bomb on my house today my group is going to get together tomorrow night for our first in-person game since March 14th (I looked it up). We tried a game via Google Meet in June and that was a great big meh, except for the automatic captioning feature which was rib-busting hilarious.

I'm going to use a creature created by Drejk, the Mother of Pain (that's the name of the creature, not Drejk's nickname). I'm really excited about it because it's our first time to gather in a long time, it's actually on Halloween AND it's a full moon (what could be better for a Halloween game besides actual lycanthropic pole dancers or something), and Drejk creates amazing monsters and NPCs.

Anyway, how about the rest of us? Gaming, turning off the lights to hide from harassing mobs of masked children roaming the streets, or socially distanced throwing of candy via holiday-themed trebuchets at trick or treaters?

I have a candy chute! I bought a ten-foot plastic gutter from Home Depot for under $5.00. I'm tying a jaw-less Halloween mask to one end so it looks like the end of the chute is the maks's mouth. I'll let the kids decorate it with stickers or markers or whatever, and then I'll wrap the thing in a string of LED lights. Prop it up on a ladder and something chest height, wrap the whole deal in those fake spider-webs that you see everywhere, and socially-distanced passing out of candy is GO.

We're still debating how much trick-or-treating we'll let the kids do. We'll probably go early and only to houses that also have some sort of safe option set up.

Not much else going on that's not directly related to Halloween.

Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into it.

Remind me what an incursion is, again? Is it the same as an incursion from Monte Cook's Cypher System games?

In Trophy an adventure or module is called an "incursion."

That's because the game is set up such that the player characters ("treasure-hunters") are going into places that they aren't supposed to go... and are not wanted.

It's also because incursions are sort of deconstructions of traditional modules: All the familiar adventure elements are there, but the information is presented in a different way, and the play experience is very different as a result. Trophy has fast become one of my favorite RPGs.

I bought a Numenera PDF bundle a while back, but mostly just looked at the art (which is gorgeous). I haven't taken a close look at the rules of Cypher System yet, and dI can't say how Cook is using the term.

Your explanation makes sense, thanks.

I probably bought the same bundle! I'd like to see if I can run a game as a PbP since that's the only gaming I get to do right now, but I think it's doable. As always, the main issue is free time.

An incursion in Numenera... is actually called an "intrusion." I conflated the terms. Anyway, an intrusion in Numenera (and other Cypher games) is when, a few times during an adventure, the GM introduces an unexpected bad effect or obstacle after the player has announced their action. Whenever it makes thematic sense and improves the story being told. The player can then choose to spend an XP point to negate the incursion or accept the incursion. If they accept, the player receives 2 XP points, but must give one of those points to another player as makes story sense for dealing with that intrusion. That's all from memory, so I may not have the specifics right.

Does anyone have any gaming-related stuff going on this upcoming week?

This past week, my home group was down two players, so I ran a one-shot with our former Monster of the Week characters. I called the adventure "The Ipswich Horror," and it was more-or-less a direct rip-off of Lovecraft's short story "The Dunwich Horror," but this time the monster was a sea-creature wreaking havoc. We ended up getting bogged down in the investigation side of things, and never got to the kicking monster butt part of the adventure, so we'll save the "part 2" for the next time we need to run a B-game.

Last night, I ran the first of a three-part Trophy Gold series of the incursion "Hester's Mill" over on The Gauntlet. And we welcomed a refugee from these very boards! I had a blast! If anyone is interested, I recorded the session, available here.

And on Sunday afternoon, I'm attending a virtual RPG designers workshop, hosted by indie RPG designer Jason Cordova. I submitted an early draft of my "Powered by the Apocalypse" hard-boiled/noir detective RPG Naked City Blues for feedback and discussion. I'm really looking forward to that!

What do you folks have going on?

Beginner Box arrived!

Will spend the weekend immersing myself in all the rules (or more precisely, sorting out all the rules that are in my head but not in the box), and then off to find compliant pawns to practice on.

My group doesn't have anything this weekend, but last weekend's game was a lot of fun. Drejk's undead horror, The Mother of Pain, really freaked my players out. The party's Monk, who got separated from the rest of the group ended up fighting the BBEG alone (an Asakku demon) and I don't think I've ever seen so many critical hits in single combat before. Her dice were on fire. But really the best part of the night was just getting together for the first time since March. We're hoping to get back on our every-other-week schedule, so chances are it won't be until next Saturday when we get together again.

No game this weekend for us. One player got shuffled into a work shift due to a covid-related absence. One is dealing with a change in medication and is not sure what state she'll be in come game day. And I am having an extremely unpleasant latter half of the week due to an unwanted visitor that's thrown my whole mental state upside down. So not a great week for gaming, all in all.

I'm going to be on my 2nd of 5 straight additional weekends for work.

Unwanted visitors are the bane of my existence. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this stuff.

If I leave now I could be there by this evening. I'll make the unwanted visitor want to leave...unless it's Scint. In that case, dude, you're on your own.

Game night got moved from this weekend to next. I'm getting that twitch to run something again though. The last game was a 5e game that I was a player for. It was... sub par. Wonder if I can convince these guys to ditch board game night next Sat and roll up PF 1e characters instead?

I have nothing planned for this weekend, and I'm really looking forward to accomplishing everything I have planned to do this weekend.

Grand Lodge

Rise of the Runelord this weekend. Gonna see how many giants we can get through.

It's next weekend, but I just signed up to play a one-shot of the forthcoming Urban Shadows Second Edition over at Magpie Games Community Game Day!

I'm a HUGE fan of Urban Shadows, and I've backed backed US2e Kickstarter. If you like modern-day urban fantasy and was a fan of games like the old d20 Modern setting "Urban Arcana" or played World of Darkness, then this game is for you!

The playtest package for US2e looks amazing: It's the same game, with some of the clunkier elements smoothed out and streamlined. Some very popular third-party playbooks (that PbtA-speak for "character classes") are now rolled into the core game, too!

I attended an RPG writer's workshop on Sunday, and got some amazing feedback on the initial incomplete draft of my new RPG Naked City Blues. It's going to be a much stronger game!

That's really awesome!

I just put a four-game series of Naked City Blues up on the Gauntlet Calendar for January. This should give me the impetus I need to actually finish a playable first draft of the game!

Hopefully I can get everyone to play Starfinder this weekend.

If not I'll probably make a character for Dead Reign (an RPG set during a zombie apocalypse).

I'll be running our regular campaign Saturday night. Two weeks ago I ran a game on Halloween so we're going to try and get back into at least a semi-regular schedule of gaming. I should have used the months of not GMing to actually work on the campaign, but honestly, I needed a break. After so long it began to feel like a job instead of a hobby, and I certainly don't want that to happen.

If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend Zombie World.

It's the best zombie apocalypse RPG I've ever played. And among the best action-horror games.

I had a board game night set up for tomorrow at a friend's house. He's running a fever and a sore throat; his 7 y/old daughter has a fever too. Regardless of their testing, I'm not heading over this weekend.

Just... I feel like I've spent the past 9-10 months just holding my breath. One gaming friend of mine already went to the hospital; she recovered thank the Maker but who knows when she'll be up to gaming in person again. Now my buddy's whole family might be in harm's way.

Worry and fear are the worst players to have at your table. Hopefully everyone out there is staying safe and healthy.

I almost forgot: I'm playing in a one-shot of Urban Shadows Second Edition over at Magpie Games Online tomorrow! I've only played US once a few years ago... and that was the first edition of the game.

To be honest, I'm most looking forward to being on the player side of the GM screen... I've been GMing nearly exclusively for the past few months, usually twice a week!

I will look at it, I've also been looking at Bunnies and Burrows by Frog God Games, if you have any experience with that I'd like to hear it, reviews are woefully thin.

Thinking about your friends and their families, Mark. Hope they come through okay.

Mark: Sorry to hear about your friends and COVID. I truly hope everyone is going to be OK.

Captain: I played Bunnies & Burrows once at a regional RPG convention about 30 years ago. I'll have to be honest that I wasn't impressed with the game, but I think that was mainly due to the GM not really knowing the game very well. I know that there have been many editions of the game... including a supplement from Steve Jackson Games that converted the setting to GURPS. I have not looked at the FGG version.

A few years ago, indie RPG designer Jason Morningstar released a very different RPG also based on Watership Down called The Warren. I haven't played it, but it's got a decent reputation, and Morningstar is one of my favorite RPG designers. (He's a pretty cool guy, too!)

Oh... and I wasn't able to attend that Urban Shadows game at Magpie Community Game Day, as we had a plumbing emergency in my kitchen about an hour before that game was supposed to start.

Mark, I hope your friends pull through it. Even though the survival rate is high, the lingering effects just don't go away and they're still finding new ones.

Tonight's game went pretty well, though it ran longer than usual and I even had fewer players than normal (5). I ran a game based on a friend's idea and my ex-wife (we're really best friends - just better friends than we were spouses) had suggested some things that would have added some extra layers to it to give it more intrigue than the almost non-stop monster fight it turned into. We started at 6:15 pm and by 9 pm I knew I wouldn't be able to add those other bits to it. It finally ended by 12:45 am. But everyone had a good time, got some XP, got some loot, and after this adventure, are well on their way to becoming folk heroes in the area where they're at currently.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. My buddy and his daughter tested negative! With the way things have been spiking around here I got paranoid.

Anyway, last night my friend (who is still sick with a sore throat mind you) was already asking when our next game night would be. Time will tell.

I didn't do anything I said I was going to do this weekend.

I'm okay with that, I still had a pretty good weekend of playing the video game Days Gone (which I highly recommend if you have a PlayStation 4 (or 5).

This is a time when paranoia could pay off. I just radically altered my Thanksgiving plans because of Plague 2.0. Well, that and politics. It just isn't a good time to be around some folks, for either physical or mental health.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

My Thanksgiving plans are the same as every year.

Hunker down and wait for the inevitable blizzard I'll have to shovel out of.

That's our plan as well, depending how early the snows come. And despite much complaining from Scints family.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have no family in the state I live in and the plague is making long travel too risky right now. I have lots of gamers, but not too many close friends. The friends I do have are joining their own families for the holiday. My Thanksgiving will likely be me and my kids eating a modest dinner and playing cards.

My spouse, daughter, and I live in central New York State. My wife's extended family all lives on Long Island, and my extended family are all in New Hampshire (with the exception of one cousin who lives in Colorado.)

In a normal year, we head downstate to spend Thanksgiving with my wife's family. We stay put for Christmas and throw a big Christmas Day open house party for our friends and neighbors. And then we head to New Hampshire a few days after Christmas, and spend my birthday/New Year's Eve with my extended family, and drive back New Year's Day.

We broke the news last week to both extended families that we're not traveling for the holidays at all this year due to the danger posed by COVID.

Thanksgiving is just going to be the four of us at our place: Me, my wife, our daughter, and her SO. (Our daughter's SO lives with their 92-year-old grandfather and is his caretaker. Granddad doesn't really get out much, so our two households are a single quarantine pod.)

We're trying to figure out if we should try to plan an outdoor, socially-distant Christmas Day party this year. Basically, set up a fire pit in the back yard and make sure everyone is masked/stays 6 feet distant from each other. Maybe instead of it being an open house, ask people to commit to a specific block of time? I'm not sure if we'll do it, but I'm interested in at least gaming it out!

Fire pits have been a popular installation this year, the boss even trained two other crews in how to install them.

I even built an outdoors King Arthur fireplace.

captain yesterday wrote:

What on earth does that look like?

A round table with a firepit for a pedestal?

Like this except I put wood boxes on both sides.

captain yesterday wrote:

That's really nice! Around here the big Autumn activities are groups around bonfires, drinking, etc. I know a couple of people with really nice setups like this, though. I don't attend bonfire gatherings (now because of COVID) but my introversion and mild pyrophobia take care of the rest...lol

I was thinking about digging a shallow pit in my back yard, lining it with river stones and calling it a day but that's MUCH nicer.

A former D&D group I played with many years ago just re-formed virtually, and asked me to join. They're playing PF1. I'm joining out of nostaliga. I had lobbied to run the game in an OSR ruleset (I posed Old School Essentials), but Pathfinder won the day.

The GM said he wants to run us through Shattered Star.

I'm dusting off an old character of mine: Valeria Baladin, half-Chelish/half Varisian troubadour and priestess of Desna.

Our next game night is scheduled for December 12th. Thanksgiving weekend and other commitments called for it to be a bit longer down the road. Which is fine because the idea I have for the next bit of the campaign is going to take some planning.

What is everyone else doing this weekend?

By all the Old Gods and the New... I had forgotten how absolutely freaking annoying character creation is in Pathfinder 1e!

I've gotten spoiled with character generation in PbtA: Pick a playbook, choose an option or two from a list, fill in a name, and you're ready to go! If you spend more than 5 minutes, you're dithering.

Ran a Dwarf Quest session in NWN last night.

Waiting on everyone to show up for Savage Tide PnP today.
Have another Dwarf Quest NWN session tonight after PnP.
Playerside in another NWN session tomorrow night.

It's Friday and the weekend begins. What does everyone have on tap for the next few days? We're on hiatus again but only until December 12th, which will find me on December 11th frantically throwing together a game for my group.

How about the rest of us?
