So, Guns?

Pathfinder Society

Hi everyone,

I started playing PFS this past weekend at Dragon*Con, it was a LOT of fun and the Swashbuckler cleric build is turning out to be a lot of fun....

Well here is my question, I got to read some of the Pathfinder Chronicles book.. and I came across the Firearms on page 212... are there any plans to have them in the PFS campaign?

The idea of a Duel Flintlock weilding swashbuckeling cleric sounds like a hela'ammount of fun.

Joshua states on this page of the FAQ that no firearms are allowed in Society play:

Freaky, My daughter was just questioning me about my collection of Zorro DVDs a few minutes ago. I love the concept.

While guns certainly have their place on Golarion (in Alkenstar) they don't fit the flavor of the rest of the world. So we prefer to keep the Society gun free.

I really wanna see an Alkenstar bandit group wielding shotguns (Scatterguns). So sue me for liking steampunk-ish stuff so much. :P

I don't get it, but it's your world.

It's always been kind of strange to me that Alkenstar was even put into Golarion, it's this big buffer zone that seems to be destined to be the last documented section of Golarion and seems headed for a life of obscurity in PFS with it's signature weapons being disallowed and the region left to molder in the closet. I know I've had to shoot down a couple people who wanted to make gunslinging brigands from Alkenstar due to firearms noninclusion and the regions void of information.

The point is that someone who is in to that sort of thing can play that sort of game in Golarion, without adding a nation, and with some background in the Campaign Setting. No less than most others in fact.

But its an out there nation, many won't like it, and its not what paizo are interested in doing anytime soon. But its there. As an option, which is really what Pathfinder is all about.

Unfortunately it's an option that is restricted to home games for the most part. I'm on the idea that it would be nice to leave my own walled off sandbox and play in the worlds sandbox once and a while. And considering that guns are so expensive as to be worthless and rather hobbled ruleswise you would only see guns being used by people who really, really love guns and the idea behind Alkenstar.

And seeing the onlt PF play I have a chance to play is the PFS, I'm SOL untill the new Arcanis Campaign kicks off next year.

I have a friend of mine who said I could just use two med cossbows (fire and drop) and then run into melee, but it just dosint seem "right" if you know what I mean, well "look" right in my head.

I could understand not having revolvers, but flintlocks would be all over the world by now (see how they changed the face if war in our own history)

Though I do have to say the "look" of fighting with a revover in one hand and a sword in the other; shooting, spining, and slicing your way though the chaos of melee shounds damn cool.

Alkenstar artifically keeps the supply of firearms low so they are not all over the world. In fact, the majority of firearms are still in Alkenstar.

I don't mind guns in my fantasy (Ptolus handles them quite nicely), but I understand that many D&D players feel differently.

But they wouldn't really have the same affect in a world with magic fireballs and lightning bolts dealing the same or more damage, and the weakest of damage spells being more accurate than any gun can be.I could see the British lining up for a volley from their muskets (circa 1700s), and a Mage step out from the brush to the side of the line and cast lightning bolt, taking out 1/2 the line..

I had to do an in-depth review of the Pathfinder firearms rule the other day for a player of mine who was rolling a gunslinging tiefling paladin for the Council of Thieves campaign, and I concluded that mechanically, guns are very balanced. They require a feat yes, but they do not incur the -2 to shoot in one hand that light crossbows incur (so a two-weapon fighting feat, revolver in each hand build is a very appealing option, as you shoot at -2/-2, instead of -4/-4 in the case of dual light crossbows; you don't even need rapid shot, and thanks to TWF you can switch to a pretty decent melee role if you have quickdraw)

I don't see why firearms are not allowed in Society play. Of all people on the face of Golarion, Pathfinder Society agents strike me as the kind of people who would be the most likely to play with such advanced/exotic gadgets/weaponry. They're "international spies" and to me it would feel completely natural that many of them would have explored firearms and moved on from the bow/crossbow traditions. Not mentioning that the Society is actually perfectly suited for the trade of firearms (international reach, often transport weird relics accross borders, etc.)

If I had to give a reason, the society is interested in why that area evolved the way it did, and doesn't want to loose the ability to dig and research there. Thus they abide by the restrictions set forth by the local governments.
