Disney Buys Marvel For $4 Billion
The worldwide leader in family entertainment is about to get a great deal more entertaining, as the Walt Disney Company agrees to acquire iconic comic book company Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.
More than 5,000 iconic comic book characters will soon be in the hands of Disney, raising serious questions about the future of Marvel video game titles from Activision, Sega, THQ, and the upcoming MMO from Gazillion Entertainment. Under the terms of the agreement, Disney will pay Marvel shareholders $30 per share for their Marvel stock, plus .745 of a share of Disney stock for each share they own.

What?!? This is just... this is just wrong. Disney does lovable family characters, Marvel does superheroes and never in the twain shall meet. This just shouldn't happen in a sane world.
You live in a free market world and yes it has happened.
I am not as certain as you that this is a sign of the end of times.Yeah I remember loveable bambi ever remember what happened to his mother?
And wait doesn't he try and kill his rival by pushing him off a cliff?
Yes I am quite sure this is not the end of times.
Disney is not a family fun studio.
It is a bussiness.
Market forces drive them more than anything else.
I am going to take the wait and see approch because there is nothing worse than jugding something on name alone.

Hey, I never said we lived in a sane world, did I? Besides, I know nothing will probably change about either company, but right now it just seems mind-breakingly wrong.

Marvel is going to be all G rated now, comics and movies.
Nope. From Wikipedia:
Disney's media releases and company practices have prompted action from activists, artists, and causes around the world.
Religious welfare groups, such as the Catholic League, have spoken out against the release of material which they and others found offensive, including vehement protests of the Miramax Films features Priest (1994) and Dogma (1999).[19] Disney pushed back the release date for Dogma due to the controversy surrounding the movie, and eventually sold the distribution rights to Lions Gate Films. The ABC show Nothing Sacred, about a Jesuit priest, a book called Growing Up Gay (published by Disney-owned Hyperion Press), the annual Gay and Lesbian Days at Disney theme parks, and similar issues spurred boycotts of Disney and its advertisers by the Catholic League, the Assemblies of God, and other conservative groups.

The Jade |

My guess? What this really means is that Disney will make all future Marvel superhero films. Economies of scale.
I think Disney will let Marvel do what Marvel does. They're not buying it to devalue it by dumbing it down. This is a money thing, and Disney owns other companies that product creative product that is anything but G rated. (Edit: See Joela's post just above)
The danger here may Disney shareholders doing what shareholders do. They'll demand higher profits which may lead Marvel to try something big and different in the near future that some people like and some despise. Sound familiar?

Google bought youtube.
It had some minor changes to make it more profitable.
I still love youtube I can't get enough.
The difference is they both new companies in the same area.
These are both companies in the same area (entertainment) who have been around for along time.
I am going to say one thing.
90's.
When you can take an onus for that, then start talking about the evils of Disney.
Disney has the power to bring comics back to the main stream.
Imagine a newly invigorated comic industry where the imaginative mind is remember.
Remember this Disney is too money hungery to stuff things up.

Duck wingduck was a great cartoon I have fond memories of it.Just as I do of Duckula and the Transformers.
I have gone back and watched first few episodes Transformers and they lets say less than fantastic but I still enjoyed watching them because they were part of my childhood.

Walt Disney Pitchers doesn’t make any movie over PG-13 but Touchstone films, owned by Disney but not branded as Disney; makes movies mostly rated PG to R.
If Marvel is branded as a separate company like Touchstone then Marvel movies and comics would probably stay the way they are but if Marvel become a Disney branded product then they will become G rated.I doubt Disney would be that stupid but you can expect to see a lot of Marvel characters neutered and put on display at Disney theme parks.

Davi The Eccentric |

I'd hate to see Marvel characters neutered and put on display at a theme park.
On a totally unrelated note, I wonder how this will affect Universal Studios Theme Park?
Technically, all of Marvel's previous contracts will still be in effect until they expire naturally, but since this is Disney's main theme park competitor we're talking about... well, let's say they're going to be doing some extensive remodeling.

Seriously though, folks, some people are reacting waaayyy to crazily over this. I read one comment on the sci-fi wire that claimed Disney was some kind of crazy, right-wing extremist company and would censor the Marvel writers to keep conservatives happy. WTF?!?
Disney is in the business of entertainment, which, more or less, is all about
(a)making your target audience happy, and
(b) increasing the size of said target audience.
By acquiring Marvel, and all the characters that go with it, Disney gets to increase their target audience big time. Disney has access to more capital, which means more funding for great movies. Disney has a great history with animation, which is a natural medium for comic book characters.
All in all, I see this as a good thing.

Who says that I am making fun of it? I think that crossovers could be really awesome here. There are lots of cross-overs with Disney that do just fine, such as Kingdom Hearts.
I don't know why you are assuming that I am dissing, you are completely misreading what I am saying. Just because I take on a light tone doesn't mean that I think the world is coming to an end. I appreciate the absurd that could result. I geuss you don't.

I agree. I never saw the issues that are delt with by comics as being left/right issues or the the stories told by Marvel, DC, etc. as being overtly political. Some people have too much time on their hands.

I'm gonna take a 'wait and see' approach myself but I keep having visions of Wolverine's claws being replaced with blunted steak knives or worse, butter knives!
My only fear is that every disney movie follows the same formula:
Stuff
Song & Dance
More stuff
Another song & dance
end credits.
I hear that Wolverine can sing and dance quite well so that might not be quite as bad as it sounds...

No apologies are necessary. Its easy to misread what is being said without the writers voice.
...
Well, if they did it would you read it?
I know I would.

Caladors |

That was ment to be my.
Rather than I.
Well here is my point look at this.
Disney is slightly big
They didn't buy marvel to shut it down.
They bought it so they could make a boat load of money off it.

EloraRose |

I mean, Disney really did have to do something. With crap shows like Hannah Montana and the like they have lost a great deal of their male audience.
I mean when is the last time they had a decent TV show for boys? By buying Marvel they are trying to retarget that demographic that they have neglected for the past half dozen years. And censoring the Marvel universe and trying to make it fluffy would be a waste of their time and money. They would lose the male demographic if they did that.
PS Darkwing Duck vs. Juggernaut = Win the only more entertaining thing would be if they had bought DC instead of Marvel and we could see a face off between DD and Batman....

This is causing a craving ...
Roast Duck
yield: Makes 4 servings
active time: 15 min
total time: 2 3/4 hr
A whole roasted duck doesn't have to be fussy. With just a few hours' roasting and hardly any work at all, you can have a juicy bird with crisp...
Ingredients
1 (5- to 6-lb) Long Island duck (also known as Pekin)
2 cups boiling-hot water
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Preparation
Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 425°F.
If necessary, cut off wing tips with poultry shears or a sharp knife. Remove and discard excess fat from body cavity and neck, then rinse duck inside and out. Prick skin all over with a sharp fork. Fold neck skin under body, then put duck, breast side up, on a rack in a 13- by 9- by 3-inch roasting pan and pour boiling-hot water over duck (to tighten skin). Cool duck, then pour out any water from cavity into pan. Pat duck dry inside and out, reserving water in pan, then rub duck inside and out with kosher salt and pepper.
Roast duck, breast side up, 45 minutes, then remove from oven. Turn duck over using 2 wooden spoons, and roast 45 minutes more. Turn duck over again (breast side up), tilting duck to drain any liquid from cavity into pan. Continue to roast duck until skin is brown and crisp, about 45 minutes more (total roasting time: about 2 1/4 hours). Tilt duck to drain any more liquid from cavity into pan. Transfer duck to a cutting board and let stand 15 minutes before carving. Discard liquid in roasting pan.

The reason they are dissing it is because Disney has a reputation of catering to the right-wing
Because ABC has so much right wing programing right? Seriously people, if you are going to throw around charges like this, look at what Disney already owns and see if there is any validaty to it first. [Spock]It is only logical.[/Spock]
Edit: By people, I mean th public in general, not necessarally anyone on this board.
