Rules clarification: racial ability bonuses

Rules Questions

Do they get applied after the point buy is complete or before you do the point buy?

I think they are applied after so it will be cheaper for the character. I will admit I could not find rules that stated either way.

Silver Crusade

After. Abilitiy Scores are determined first, then Race, then Class. Of course, it's not necessarily that way in your mind, but that's the steps according to the rules. Be glad. It works out in your favor.

It's after, always has been. It's also spelled out in the Pathfinder Society Guide (v.'s 1.1 and 2.0).

Yeah, that order doesn't really make sense. Who thinks of ability scores first? "Hm... I think I'll make something strong and smart, but ugly as hell and oblivious to the world. Hm... what race do I play. Hm.. what class do I play?"

Still, it's the way the rules apply: You determine your ability scores according to the method(s) your GM allows you, and after that assign racial modifiers. That's why elves can have dex and/or int 20 even at level 1 (and the same for other races and their bonus scores).

In our Ironman games (3d6, in order), you get your ability scores before you decide what race and class you want to play.

It's just the order you build a character in, not the order you envision a character concept. I'll sit down and know I am going to roll up a dwarven fighter, but I am still rolling my ability scores before I apply racial bonuses, abilities and other features.

Dark Archive

It goes back to the good old days, when you rolled 3d6, in order, and had to meet certain stat requirements to be a specific class (Cleric, Fighter, Magic-user, Thief, Halfling, Elf, or Dwarf) in the original (pre-AD&D) D&D.

Sometimes it is a fun way to try something unexpected...try it.
