New to Pathfinder...

Scarab Sages

Hello all...

I'm new to Pathfinder. Just getting started reading the book and loving everything I read. As an old-school D&D gamer from about 15 years ago - I'm now getting back into gaming, and Pathfinder is definitely the way I'm going... Now just to find some other players here in surrounding Hartford, CT.

Anyway, I did want to ask a few questions being new to the whole thing, and I don't want to purchase confusing combinations of materials. I am interested in subscribing to some of the book releases, however, I want to make sure that I'm getting the right things.

First of all, I want to become acquainted with Golarion and I have none of the 3.5 stuff. So, since I'm starting with the PF RPG, should I get the 3.5 Golarion book? Or will there be something different I should start with for the PF RPG? I know there are some other things forthcoming, but I didn't see anything about a new general setting book.

I guess I can also turn this thread into an even more general question:

As someone totally starting with the new Pathfinder RPG, and no background in the 3.5 stuff... What else do I need? And in what order would you suggest I pick them up?

Thanks for all the help. I'm very excited to be getting back into gaming, 15 years is too long to wait. And I'm sure I'll end up having to run the game so I'll probably start a thread on new GM'ing advice as well... (now to find those players...)

Recommendations For a New Pathfanatic

There are some great recommendations there :)

Getting the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting book is the next best thing after getting the Core Rules, IMHO, but other people have some insight in that thread I linked.

Enjoy!

Ooops... I didn't see that thread. Sorry about that. I'll definitely spend some time going through there and get back with some questions.

Thanks so much.

Hello and welcome to the boards ! Lilith should be soon around with cookies.

The Pathfinder Campaign setting is crunch-light and you will be able to use 95% of it with PFRPG. Since the book is an Ennie winner, you really should grab it ! It's a great introduction to the setting.

Once you read that there are PF Companions and Chronicles on various specific topics. Depends on what floats your boat :)

If you want to run something premade, there are four complete Adventure Paths and dozens of standalone modules set in Golarion.

Now as for 3.5 books - these are becoming scarce due to being out of print and WotC pulling PDF versions away. While Paizo will be releasing it's own line of supplements for PFRPG, there are a few really good 3.5 books, both from WotC and third party publishers. Since you want to be GMing, we can point you to the best choice of books on any subject.

No problem LOL

The boards are pretty well-used, so a thread can get lost in visibility pretty quickly.

Welcome aboard!
I am fairly new here too

Hi!

One important bit of advice: Don't waste your allegiance on that moribund "empire" of hasbeens. Taldor's days are counted, and you should get off that plague-ridden junk before it drags you into the abyss along with it.

May I suggest throwing in your lot with Cheliax. It's the Power you want to be with if you like to get things done. Cheliax is so awesome and powerful that Hell itself is its thrall! The infernal legions bend their knee to the great Majestix!

You can't afford not to join!

The Campaign Setting is definetly recommended reading. Sure, it's still 3.5, but most of the rules in that book still work. And the book is mostly (I'd say 90%) setting information, anyway. You could use that book with AD&D 2e or True 20 or whatever.

As a player, you should have everything you need: The RPG core book contains all the info a player needs. If you want to sit behind the screen and run your own game as a GM, you'll also need the Bestiary, which will be released in a bit more than a month, as it contains all the monstrosities that populate the game world.

The rest is business as usual: Dice, a screen to hide behind, maybe a battlemat and minis (or anything that can serve as a grid, and everything that can serve to represent characters and enemies.)

Just to add my own welcome to the boards to you, Bibliomane74. :)

Thanks again for all of the advice everybody. I've been crippling my bank account following a lot of it. So far, I have the Chronicles Campaign guide coming and I signed up for the Chronicles subscription as well and the RPG subscription. Once I get through reading the Golarion book, I hope to be a little more up to speed on the world. All of the subscriptions are painful though. I really want them all!!!!

Or at least maybe the Adventure Path...

The campaign setting is easily my most read book. I have two copies, thank goodness because I'm reading one of them ragged. It's mostly flavor but the crunch that is there is very flavorful and still pretty compatible. =)

Thanks again for all of the welcomes. And I am excited to be getting my Chronicles book. Quick question - what is the benefit of also getting the Companion stuff?

BTW - thanks for the cookies...

Remember that this one is a bit different from the rest: You get 30% off from your Adventure Path subscription - and 15% off everything else (except non-Paizo PDFs). That includes other subscriptions as well as anything you can buy in the shop (but as I just mentioned, PDFs that aren't from Paizo are not included, and the 15% are off the list price, not Paizo's price, so you don't always get a "true" 15% discount)

Companions are shorter (and cheaper) and geared more towards players (though of course GMs can still use them, and Chronicles is still mostly viable for players, though it sometimes contains secret information - just remember that player knowledge and character knowledge isn't the same and you're good).

The main difference is that they have a higher content of rules content: Usually you get some feats, some spells and magic items, a PrC, and character traits.

For the last two Adventure Paths (Second Darkness and Legacy of Fire), the Player's Guides were companions. Earlier APs came before the Companions line and had different player's guides that were half as big as companions and only cost 2 bucks (or nothing in the case of PDFs). From the current AP (Council of Thieves) onward, the player's guides will be PDF only, and will be free. But usually, the companion that is released on the same month as the first installment of an AP will be about the country the AP takes place in and thus will be useful to players and GMs playing that AP.
