I am going to be playing a druid and I was trying to figure out what animals the Sylvan language allowed you to communicate with. The language description in the Linguistics skill states that you can talk to centaurs, fey creatures, plant creatures, unicorns), while in the druid description is says it is the language of woodland creatures.
Does sylvan allow you to communicate with animals or just fey and such?

right woodland creatures capable of speech, which animals are not, but if you encounter an animal with a high intelligence due to magic that knows sylvan, then yes you can talk to it.
As was stated, if they have an int of at least 4 or higher, they are sentient. Most sentient animals/magical creatures that live in the forests learn sylvan (just because that's what is spoken there). I've always just assumed if they were smart enough to learn a language, they know a language appropriate to their environment.
Note however, that it's the int, not whether they can talk. A magical wolf might have an Int of 8, but unless the magic modified his vocal chords, he still can only bark whine and whimper. Doesn't mean he can't understand, just not speak. Fantasy lore is rife with magical animals that can't speak but can understand languages.
Really it's up to you how you want to treat it in your game (if you're the GM, if not, it's up to your GM). However, if your animal companion ever gains enough intelligence to be sentient, it would likely learn whatever language YOU speak the most. Just like a cat that gained sentience in a human city would likely learn common, and a falcon that gained sentience in an elven realm would likely learn elven.
Interesting though though, what happens when you put a Collar of Int +4 on your dog. That boosts him to a 5 or 6 when it's on. So... does he become sentient, or just a super super smart dog? I don't think I've ever seen anything in writing about it. :)
