I played an archer in 3.5. There were three reasons for taking the Manyshot feat:
1) It was a prereq for Improved Rapids Shot.
2) You could use it as your standard action in a surprise round.
3) It was a free feat for a ranger with the archer path at 6th level.
Three things have changed for Manyshot in Pathfinder RPG. It's now a full-round action, it doesn't improve to more than one extra arrow, and there are no penalties to attack rolls.
They nerfed the feat! It's basically useless.
1) There is no Improved Rapid Shot, and I don't think manyshot should be a prereq for it even if there was.
2) It's a full-round action so an archer in a surprise round is limited to shooting one arrow as a standard action. This especially hurts a mid to high level archer where other classes can still cast spells, or use feats like power attack. I don't see anything better until a ranger hits 10th level, or another archer has a BAB +16, and they can take Pinpoint Targeting.
3) It's no longer free. There are much better feats that an archer can choose from.
The no penalties to attack rolls is nice, but I'd like to revert back to the 3.5 version of the feat: have Manyshot as a standard action, take penalties and be able to shoot more than two arrows if I want. Note: I play in the Pathfinder Society so I just can't make it a house rule.

I thought so at first. It is not so much nerfed as changed.
Basically Vital Strike is the Manyshot in PF. You get an extra weapon die (or more) that doesn't get precision damage, as a standard action.
Manyshot is now the Vital Strike in a full attack. You get an extra weapon damage die at no penalty. It took me a bit to wrap my head around it myself.

No, with Vital Strike you only get 1d8 more dammage. With Manyshot, you get extra dammage per arrow. Even with the PF version, it's 1d8 + str bonus + magic bonus + favored enemy bonus, for each arrow.
I would much rather take a -4 to hit as a standard action to fire two arrows during a surpise round. When I've played an archer in the past generally, it wasn't about hitting, it was about doing dammage. With my current character, Ranger 2, I started using Rapid Shot at 2nd level and the trade off of miss vs extra dammage is well worth it.
Vital Strike just looks like a relatively weak feat except at very low levels.

Yes, only 1d8 while you have less than a +11 BAB. Then it becomes 2 and then 3d8 more. I fully admit that not getting the bonus from composite enhancement and magic enhancement is painful, but you do get something.
Sorry, I didn't see that thread. Basically, you need to take three feats (Vital Strike, Improved Vital Strike, and Greater Vital Strike) to add 3d8. Wow, that really makes it worse. With one feat and a to hit penalty, 3.5 Manyshot, I got all that damage and more. Sorry, I'm not convinced.
I'll continue in the other thread.

That's your argument? It's useless in the surprise round? How about a surprise round where your more then 30' away from your target? Bam! Now both version of the Manyshot feat are completely useless. To be even worse, a surprise round you don't even get to act in?! :)
It's a completely different feat from what it is before, and the feat that used to exist in all honesty was pretty stupid. The Fellowship of the Ring has been out of theaters for a while now so no reason to have it in the game. You want Vital Strike to up your damage with a single attack.
Archery is and always has been about volume after all, and when your making a full attack (You know, the other 98% of the time your in combat) getting a whole extra arrow for no penalty to hit and no additional attack roll is incredibly awesome.
So it's also said, there already is a Manyshot complaint thread, please don't start a new one.
