Anyone willing to trade a brand new copy of PFRPG for 4thE Books??

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Before anyone kills me let me explain. I played D&D 3.5 for awhile when I was 19(26 now) and decided to get back into gaming. The thing is I will be the DM this time around and all my friends that are willing to play have never played a pen and paper rpg. After looking over the SRD and lots of thinking I am pretty sure I will have an easier smoother time teaching them 4E then the 3.5 system.

So heres the deal. I have a brand new copy of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook(have not even opened the package lol) and a new copy of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting. I'm looking for someone to trade me their 4E books for my Pathfinder books. I am mainly interested in the Core Books and the Eberron Setting. Let me know if your interested in trading and we will work something out!!

thanks!!

p.s. I also do not mind people posting their opinions on which would be easier for a total Newbie group(including the DM) to run.

If you start with the basics, PFRPG will work very well for new players, and you will not run into the system limitations later as my players did. 4e is a bit easier to GM, but PFRPG (3.5+, if you will) yields greater variety at the start as well as down the road. It really depends on your players and whether they are looking for a quick and easy way to kill some time, or something more involved, with greater depth.

I have at this moment all of my 4e stuff (a few hundred bucks worth) in a box in the back of my car. As soon as my wife is ready, we are going to try to return/sell/trade all of it to a couple of FLGSs.

Ah, she's ready now... off we go!

I may trade you what I have left after this quest :)

Make sure to hold onto the Core books and Eberron books if you have them!!

I have the 4th Edition PH and DM Guide gathering dust on a bookshelf. They are both brand new, opened them a total of maybe 5 times. If you want to trade the PF Core Rulebook for those, even up, you've got a deal. Just need to work out logistics. Let me know if you are interested.

Well at least we're not too far apart, I'm in the St. Louis area. I'll keep checking in today to see what you decide.

Sorry, but my main FLGS took my whole collection for $230 store credit... AND had a spare PFRGP hardback hidden away waiting for me... now I have two! Happy Day! :)

Good luck finding folks to trade - there should be many who are interested now :)

I decided after watching and reading a few more reviews that I definitely want to run 4E with the group I have. I really need a simple fun system for newbs that don't want to read through a bunch of books just to play. I'll definitely trade with you Wu Chi so shoot me an email at litebritedeath at gmail dot com and we will figure out specifics.

And to everyone else I still have a new copy of the pathfinder campaign setting that i am interested in trading for 4th edition material. Mainly interested in Eberron but i am up for anything.

thanks!!

Not being a dick or anything, but I had no gaming group recently and couldn't find players for a while. Well, long story short I got a few guys who never played RPGs before and had to teach them to play. They had some 4e stuff but hadn't really read it. I got them started playing the beta playtest and taught them how to play DnD for the first time ever using the rules. They now have been branching out into non fantasy RPGs and creating 8th level characters.

I know that 4e sounds easier to teach to newbs, but if you start with new players and just create 1st level characters with them, just giving advice in feats and skills. Teaching DnD isn't any harder or easier with 3rd edition than 4th edition.

4th edition is really great for the DM because its easy to run with, but if you're an experienced player and you'll be DMing for them. It really doesn't adjust the learning curve any with either edition in my experience, and yes I have played both Pathfinder and 4th edition and I am not a 4e hater. In fact when Darksun comes out, I may be running a 4th game because I love the setting.

This I agree with either system will involve book reading on the part of the DM and a little bit by the players. Both have a d20 to roll to do stuff. So I wouldn't base which to play on how easy one system is compared to the other - I would consider only the "feel" of the game, which is quite different.

I have all 3 core 4e books (PH, DMG, MM) just sitting on the shelf as well. I purchased them before realizing just how different they were to 3.5, and was under-impressed. Never bought any more of the 4e books, just the 3 core.

As for adventures, I've heard nothing but bad about "Keep on the Shadowfell".

There's an unofficial conversion of the "Rise of the Runelords" adventure path at Tales from the Rusty Dragon, which some people have found useful.

Whatever you do, I hope y'all have fun...!

Scott has done a great job on this conversion and I'll say it's the adventure that got me playing 4e - now if one would convince me to DM it... I think 4e = great for players, 4e = bad news for DM's ONCE combat starts (probably fine until that point).

All I've got to even offer is the players handbook and monster manual for 4th. I got those two when it first came out, so I could check it out. Didn't really do anything for me so they're just idling around waiting for selling. If you want them I would be willing to part with them for virtually nothing. It would be nice to see them put to use somewhere. My local store won't do trades or anything and obviously I'm too lazy to sell them otherwise or I would have by now......

Hey, nobody here is going to attack you, but, lemme give my 2 copper:

PFRPG is going to be far easier to teach to completely new players than 4th edition for the simple reason that it makes more sense and is easier to explain. Do yourself a favor and look through some of the 4e stuff, and ask yourself how you're going explain what the majority of the mechanics you've been taking for granted mean to someone who doesn't take them for granted. The abilities and monster stats may work from a gamist perspective (or so I hear) but, from a practical "this is what this mechanic does and why" 4e seems completely arbitrary.

(Siderant: I'm aware simulationist has become a dirty word for forumites, but it does matter. Realism is somewhat lame, but simulationism is kind of vital for new players, and the importance of gamism is overplayed for RPGs).
