I hear you. I had planned on attending this year. I try to go as often as I can. Last year was a blast. But the realities of working in an industry hugely affected by the recession made me cancel my plans.
There is not much that can compare to walking into the vendor hall with a pocket full of cash and tons of new products you just have to have.
I am hoping that this will make next year all that much better.

I've missed the last two years, which has been deeply disappointing. Gencon is a blast. The last time I went I turned 30 at the con, which was a good time. Nothing better than passing that milestone doing the things I love. This year, I will simply wait for the Pathfinder books to arrive and pretend I am not going to miss the con.

What really sucks is that you really can't know what you're missing until you've gone and experienced it for yourself. I went last year for the first time and had more fun in 4 days than I think I've experienced most of my life. Not getting to go this year after having finally done it once is freaking horrible.

Last year I attended as a Tier 1 PFS DM. It was my first ever Gencon and I was really hoping to go this year as a lower tier so I could get to experience more of the con.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?) my boyfriend decided to pick this week to be moving in with me from Texas, so I have to spend my vacation days to go get him. I think he planned it this way -_-
Next year though him, me and our gaming group are gonna do a major road trip! I'm gonna jump in on the cosplay contest next year too as an Eagle Knight.

I would have loved to be there! I've been gaming for 20+ years and I've never been to GENCON :-(
I was seriously tempted to go this year, even checked out prices for hotels and travel, but getting from Ottawa, Ontario to Indianapolis, Indiana is expensive (air) and/or time consumming (car), so I'll have to figure out what to do next year.
Oh well, a la prochaine (until next time)...

It's certainly not the same, but for anyone interested I'm blogging the con over here. Thought some of you might enjoy.

And for those of you who prefer Facebook, all the blog posts appear in the notes of the RPGAggression facebook page.
Later!

Thank you Lou. I visited your blog for the first time, and liked it enough to bookmark it for future visits. :-)

Thanks much! That's cool.
I'm starting to feel glad I passed on a t-shirt I saw at the con. It read, "More People Have Read This T-Shirt Than Your Blog"
If you find you like it and are on facebook, consider fanning the RPGAggression page, maybe? All the blog posts show up in the page's notes, and I use it less for reviews and more like a design blog.
More on Gencon to come in the next few days. Hoping to get some pictures up there too!
Thanks again and glad you enjoyed.
