Why post in a public forum instead of privately requesting reimbursement? This is the course of action I would take for any product.
I was actually agreeing with the person. People should stop whining because they didn't keep up on how things were working and so wasted an extra $30 on their order.
As for your question why some would whine about in public, well I'm sure I could image a reason. Perhaps they want to draw public attention to the issue. Often times companies do not change their methods unless pressured to. I remember a few years back, there was some outcry about items being sold out from under people, because orders were not being filled on a first-come-first-serve basis but on a first-completed basis. Due to the public outcry, that policy was changed. So, there is some benefit to making some issues public on occassion.
This one though? Probably not, some people just made bad choices and wasted their money.

Wrong. Some people weren't informed that the main reason for getting faster delivery (i.e. faster delivery) was null and void in this case and wasted money because of that. You can't expect people to read through the boards - or even the site itself.
If they're going to pull off a stunt like sending out shipments with faster (and thus more expensive) shipping options, they must actually inform them. Put up a note when they order, or inform them per email.
If they don't, people are bound to be pissed.
You can of course add insult to injury and tell them to shut up and quit whining, but you're only making them more pissed. Do that enough and they go away - and take their business with them. So now your rabid fanboyism has actually cost Paizo money.
Well done.

But wasn't in one of the weekly email newsletters that is sent out to every member? I mean someone could choose to not have that sent to them or choose not to read it, but then is anyone but that person to blame for their ignorance?

This is no stunt, this is a stated goal. They were shooting for a specific release date for everyone. Anyone who paid extra must have not been paying attention. No stunt.
If they don't, people are bound to be pissed.

Look, I understand that people are frustrated with their own poor choices (pick an expensive shipping option, not read their email newsletters carefully, not have email newsletters sent to them), but displacing that anger on others serves no purpose. For those people they should learn from their mistakes. This one cost them $30, some times our mistakes are expensive. In the big picture though $30 is a small sum.

Ease off on the anger, folks. It's not helping.
We're trying our best to get the books out. We don't control the post office and when the estimates they give us turn out to be off, there's not much we can do about it by that point.
In any event, the PDF is still not ready for public consumption, and that's the best reason at all why not to give it out. It is still being finessed and fixed up and prepared, and releasing it early at this point would, I suspect, wreak havoc on our schedule for this week, the busiest week of the year.
So please be patient. I understand folks are disappointed and excited and all that, but b$&&%ing on messageboards to each other isn't a constructive use of time or energy.
If you have a legitimate gripe or complaint about our shipping procedure, the right place to take the problem is the Customer Service boards, or simply email us or give us a call.

Thanks James.... no freaking here...or complaints...I have to ship things myself at times and I understand the woes of the current available options, and am quite pleased to often find the cheapest option is often the fastest option... Pony Express baby

KaeYoss,
I would point out that this is also a learning experience for Paizo. Yes, they've been in the business for several years, but this is the first time they have undertaken a project of this immense size. If the shipping isn't going as they planned these are the kinds of guys who will make a better go at it next time.
We get that you are upset. Believe me, after three days of your posts across several threads, we GET it. And I'm sure our friends at Paizo get it too. What's been done here is done, no one can change that at this point. It is after all still entirely possible that you will still receive your book before it's released on Thursday.

The newsletters aren't sent out to everyone. You can turn it off. And in such a situation, it's best to assume people have turned it off.
The newsletter is basically for advertising. This wasn't really advertising.
I mean someone could choose to not have that sent to them or choose not to read it, but then is anyone but that person to blame for their ignorance?
You cannot fault someone for not wanting advertising. Important information must be separate.

In perfect agreement on this.
People have lives. It's unreasonable to expect them to read message boards, newsletters, or even, for that matter, emails. It's summer after all, vacation and convention season, and some people (myself included) view email as something you can let stack up and deal with when you get home.
I'm in the lucky boat of having gotten the book early (meaning today) because I picked the cheapest shipping option, and I'd be pretty peeved too at paying $30 for a book that comes later. I'm not certain what should be done at this juncture, but expecting people to read anything beyond the initial offer is unreasonable.

Ease off on the anger, folks. It's not helping.
For the record: I'm not angry at you.
I do think you could have handled it better, and I can understand that those who are directly affected by this (looks like I might be in the clear) are angry, but right now what pisses me off is people insulting those who effectively lost money on this, or winding them up.
I just want to point out that this doesn't help. Quite the opposite: Those guys need to realise that they're not helping you by further angering already upset customers, because if someone gets angry enough, he doesn't care who insulted him, he'll take his business elsewhere.
I also want to point out that since I first made my suggestion, the majority of text I had to type about it was reactions to insults by several people. If they hadn't been so rude about it, these threads might rest on the bottom of the ocean by now.
In any event, the PDF is still not ready for public consumption, and that's the best reason at all why not to give it out. It is still being finessed and fixed up and prepared, and releasing it early at this point would, I suspect, wreak havoc on our schedule for this week, the busiest week of the year.
I can understand that. I support this decision. If it's not done, it's not done. My suggestion was based on the assumption that the PDF was done by now, and that it would be relatively easy to change the schedule.
If you have a legitimate gripe or complaint about our shipping procedure, the right place to take the problem is the Customer Service boards, or simply email us or give us a call.
I do have two suggestions:
Next time you do something like this, take the time to write a separate email to customers about it. The best way to deal with angry customers is to prevent them from being angry in the first place, as you well know.
The other is: when those PDF link slaves are done, don't let them off the leash just yet: See if they can create a nice automated or semi-automated character sheet.

Actually, I think email would have been the way to go:
Remember that this book has been in the shop system for a year or more, now. Some people had their orders for a long time now (In fact, my original order would have cost me 5 bucks or so in shipping, since it was placed well before they even guessed how heavy and expensive in shipping this book would have become), and it hasn't been that long since they decided on this staggered shipping.
I agree, of course, that there should have been something in the store itself, maybe during checkout, to inform people about this as soon as it was clear, but that wouldn't help those who ordered before.
So the best course would have been a separate email.
At this point, I think it's reasonable to say they'd have done all they could. Some people would probably still have missed it (not reading emails and all that), but their powers only go so far.
KaeYoss,
I would point out that this is also a learning experience for Paizo.
I know, that's why I have made several suggestions here. I thought they were good ones, so I shared. Might not have been good or feasible, but better to make them and have Paizo not act on them than the other way around.
We get that you are upset. Believe me, after three days of your posts across several threads, we GET it.
I think that while you get that I'm angry, you don't get why.
Let me repeat (since it hasn't come through the first times I said it):
I'm not angry at paizo. I was making what I thought were nice suggestions. I was a little envious of those who already had it, and I won't lie and say I didn't suggest this because it would have benefitted me, too, but that was not the only reason I did it.
I also had a lot of questions about the process answered, and that's good. Combined with the fact that the frickin' CEO is doing overtime packing stuff, this paints a great picture of Paizo.
What I'm angry at is the hostility, the insults and offensive posts (and general breaking of the board rules) directed at me and others who have complained. People who sounded like a broken record accusing me of repeating myself. It was like a bunch of rabid dogs going at me for having the audacity of insulting their Great Lord Paizo.
If those guys had kept their traps shut, this would have been over days ago.
| KaeYoss |
Rather than demanding.
Perhaps you should simply ask that those that have already ordered and payed for there books be allowed to order the PDF now. They already have the book on the way an pazio is not going to have do deal with flip flopers if they do this so I don't see why not.
I wasn't demanding it. I was requesting. Suggesting.
Anyway, the PDF isn't done yet, and James said changing it would put more strain on them, an they're quite busy already.
So it won't happen, because it just can't, and I'm alright with that.

I can understand them being upset. It does seem that it was poorly communicated to them that their books would not be shipped first, but were only guaranteed to arrive within days of the release date. Who wouldn't be upset to pay an extra 30 bucks for the shipping so it would get to them faster, when it actually meant that they would get their order much later than those who didn't pay extra? On the other hand, they should be very thankful that they can afford to not only pay full price for the book, but pay extra for expedited shipping. There are many people, especially nowadays, that can't even afford to get it at Amazon's reduced price with free shipping.

I think that doesn't really hold water. Sure, those of us who can afford to pay almost as much for shipping as they do for the book are fortunate. The money was still wasted. If we get philosophical, if those who overpaid for shipping had been told, they could have takent he money they'd have saved and donate it. Probably would have saved dozens of lifes. Hundreds.
So just leave the social factor out of the equation and focus on financial things, right?
Actually, I think we have that one wrapped up already.
I think we also all agree that it would be a great idea for Paizo to send out an email.
And we even agree that it won't be feasible to release the book early.
All done.
Let's break out the mead!
