Hey, I am currently looking for movies similar in flavor and quality as Pirates of the Caribbean. Do you have any suggestions?

There's a book called "On Stranger Tides" by Tim Powers that was a big influence on the films. I searched for it for years and found it recently; I think you could find a copy on Amazon if interested.
I highly reccomend it.
Don't know about the movies really; I don't think there are too many like it.
There's a movie called "The Island" by Peter Benchley from 20 years back, with modern scions of the pirates on an island in the Caribbean, attacking yachts in the modern day. It's kinda tepid.

Cuthroat Island was pretty much the precursor... Dont know of any others except Master and Commander for the Naval stuff (Russel Crowe is doing more apparently).
You might try the new Hornblower series on DVD.
Get out! Crowe's doing more? I love that movie! It'd be great to see more. The first one blew my mind.
Oh, and yeah, "Cutthroat Island" is a lot like Pirates of the Carribean, but with Geena Davis instead of Orlando Bloom. Lots of action, explosions, cheesy romance, etc.

Although it is not quite the same thing, Errol Flynn's "Captain Blood" isn't bad to sit through (you just have to overlook the racism and sexism and focus on the swashbuckling). Oh, and the ridiculous plot...But most pirate films have ridiculous plots. It's not as good as Flynn in "The Adventures of Robin Hood," but FEW films of any kind are that good! Heck, even George Lucas stole from that movie!

Considering that 'Captain Blood' was Errol Flynn's first movie I would have been shocked if it was as good as Robin Hood. I never get tired of that movie.
POTC 4 is on the docket to be made by 2012. New version of Captain Blood also on the horizon. Rumors of an Anne Bonney and Mary Reed movie have been floating about for a few years. You can watch the 1990's version of Treasure Island on Youtube with a young Christian Bale and Charlton Heston as Long John Silver. "Pirates" by Roman Polanski is a fun tale cut much in the vain of the POTC movies.

Anyone remember The Bounty with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins? Not a bad movie, but more in the vein of Master and Commander than Pirates of the Caribbean.
Ice Pirates, funny, stupid and not bad special effects for a low budget movies made in the 80s.
There's Yellowbeard. Maybe that's not quite what you had in mind...

There is a good movie called "Shipwrecked". Its one of the movies I will watch again sometime. The movie involves a good bit of piratey happiness, along with treasure. Nothing ARRGGainst the POTC series, but I am wondering how on earth they plan to make a run of it for the fourth time. I really liked the first one, and truth be told I do not dislike the following ones.
Swashbuckler - a 1976 pirate movie starring Robert Shaw, James Earl Jones, Beau Bridges, Genevieve Buljod, and Peter Boyle.
Not the best movie...
Also, Plunkett & MacLeane (1999) - highwaymen, not pirates, but with much of the same spirit.
Definately check out National Treasure #1 and #2. They aren't pirate movies, but they are action adventure movies by Disney. Nicholas Cage stars in them. They are like a Da Vinci code with less intrigue and more action. The environments are especially cool.

I'm surprised, nobody mentioned The Crimson Pirate yet. Aside from the Monkey Island Games, this movie was the first thing Pirates of the Caribbean reminded me, when I watched it in cinema.
