I think the CS had the most information put forth about them so far.
How the blades work, how they're made, etc. haven't been fleshed out yet as far as I know.
I imagine the church of Pharasma would love to see the blades destroyed.
Heck, the fact that such things are being put to such eager use just goes to show how insane Galt has become. Scary place. I actually rather take my chances in Belkzen or freakin' Ustulav...

I know that Eando's journals hint that the blades are possibly aware.

There's one in ** spoiler omitted **
Anyone remember if it
It HAS taken some fingers though, according to the Korvosa guide...
Along those lines, I'm cooking up something for the forums that involves a faulty final blade prototype. I figure it must have taken a couple of tries before they were happy with the results. >:)

Just had a look. It doesn't mention anything special about it. :-(

Ah. I do remember they specifically came from Galt though. Maybe something could be done with that...

Yeesh...creepy.
I wonder...
Could the blades be sentient upon creation?
Could they become sentient over time through use?
Or do they gain a sort of hateful sentience from some sort of amalgamation of all the souls trapped inside, possibly driven mad by their imprisonment?

My theory:
What's in the blades? Really that's up to the DM and plot. Some ideas:
- Demons, hoping to increase the chaos and destruction enough to open a 'second front' from the worldwound.
- Devils, feeding on the souls sacrificed to them, and working a long term plan to expand their influence, either as a 'warning' to Cheliax (if not for us, you'd be as bad as Galt) or to create an opportunity to expand. (We're from Cheliax, and we're here to help)
- Proteans, trying to increase the psychic chaos resonance. They're collecting the souls in the blades to augment them enough to 'cut through' reality.
- Outer horrors Who knows what they're doing?
- The dead. All the blades are holding souls and pain, and they want more.
Just some random musings.

I would like to tie the Final Blades in to my idea of the Grey Gardeners as ghoul cultists of Urgathoa, manipulating the 'Perpetual Revolution' ("If the Revolution is without end, then the Revolution can never be defeated!") to make sure that they can legally get their dinners.
And since ghouls don't eat souls, well, they have to put them somewhere. Besides, should the Revolution ever turn on on its true masters, a horde of raging spectres out for revenge on the living released from the blades will help even the odds...

Could the blades be sentient upon creation?Could they become sentient over time through use?
Or could they have developed sentience prior to creation, to feel the torment of the forge forcing them into a form, constantly breaking them down and reforging them. Truly would that torment not be enough to drive anyone/anything insane?

Something I got from a friend when I mentioned Galt and the Final Blades to him:
"La Machine, the National Razor, Through the Little Window, Sneezing into the Sack -- never mind the Tourettes-level ranting of "Pere Duchesne" Hebert, the machine's number-one fanboy cheerleader (until his faction -- Les Hebertists -- were overthrown and all sneezed into the sack.
And for larval Citizens of the Republique of Perfect Virtue, they could practice on toy machines, sold with live sparrows all trussed up and ready to sneeze into the sack. I am NOT making this up.
And they WERE worshipped. For real. La Sainte Guillotine -- "The Holy Guillotine" -- WAS an actual Revolutionary Cult. Male cultists showed their Revolutionary fervor by wearing the bloodstained shirts of the executed; female cultists wore a red ribbon choker around their neck (as is seen in the last scene of the movie Danton, after the orgy of beheadings as Citizen Robespierre purges Les Dantonists. More dapper cultists (such as Citizen Robespierre) simply sewed Guillotine buttons onto their suits (costumers of a recent production of The Scarlet Pimpernel mentioned that for authenticity)."
Hmm, I wonder how to run a Final Blade cult in the game? Should they just be bloodthirsty lowlives cheering on the executions, or should they be getting spells from some god (or daemon) who sees rthis as a fun way to get worshippers?
And the bit about "larval Citizens" sounds likea good bit to describe to PCs visiting Galt. Just look at the happy kiddies playing with their toy Final Blades on those hapless sparrows and mice and pixies...

In response to what Mathew said, i have actually been planning a campaign sent in Galt to run for my group and have a semi similar idea to some of his theories. What I was working on was that the Final Blades are tied to Abaddon in regards to one of the Daemon lords, either Charon (Death) or Szuriel (War) as those lean the most towards the turmoil in Galt.
The idea I had that when the blades kill someone, they trap their soul in a demiplane. There the souls are stored and kept from the afterlife so that the Daemons could experiment/use them however they feel.
The Grey Gardeners would not only keep track of the blades but know how to enter this soul prison and are as much wardens as they are caretakers.
The campaign would run players through the troubles with Galt's Revolution and I would desire the players desire at least some stability or an end to the revolution for some reason, such as a family member killed to unhappiness with the Revolutionary Council. Evidently they would learn about the Daeomonic connection in the blades and the Gardeners desire to keep the Revolution going. They would need to sneak into Litran, learn about the blades secret, enter the demiplane to contact the soul of Hosetter who is still trapped in there and knows a way to cut off the Daemon connection to Galt and stop the Guarders, as well as the Revolutionary Council, who they seem to get on the bad side of as well.
At the moment, i am still working on this idea, but if anyone comes with some criticism for my campaign idea, let me know, would love to know what people think, as well as hear other Final Blade theories or game ideas.

It's always sad when another patriot turns traitor against the People, and justice has to be served.
Our government may need more perfecting, but with a few more purges to go, we should all be fine and free of traitors. Then we can export our glorious revolution to all of Golarion. We will no doubt start with Andoran, since they have softened and lost the spirit. And then we will crush all the tyrants from the land and start on other planes too.
