Games Shops in the UK

Gamer Life General Discussion

How are brick and mortar gaming shops doing in the UK?
(I'm not counting Games Workshop.)

I know of Travelling Man shops and Fanboy3 in Manchester. Forbidden Planet also sells some RPG stuff, depending on which ones you go to.

But the one in Cardiff has a tiny section.
I couldn't find details of Best Books & Games in Liverpool on Yell.com.
I also know of Orc's Nest, and have never rated them much.
There's also Spirit Games in Stoke-on-Trent.
Are RPGs dying out in the UK? Does anyone know of other good shops?

Hmmm... Maybe I should post this on UK Roleplayers.

Leisure Games in London has a very good selection and also friendly staff.

Playin' Games, also in London, has a downstairs area for RPGs but it's less organised than anywhere else I've seen and appears to be barely sorted into system.

There is a great shop in Lancaster, Lancashire, called Interstellar Master Trader. It's been going for years and stocks every RPG you could think of, both old and new. It also stocks a massive range of fantasy and sci-fi books. You can find it on the internet or just pop into it.

Sovereign Court

Games in London which is up by the British Museum is quite a well stocked shop.

There's Black Lion games in Edinburgh and A1 games in Glasgow

Black Dow is in Aberdeen, he's more qualified to comment on the situation there

I don't know about Dundee and in Inverness we have a comics shop with a small RPG section..though he will get me stuff to order...I just handed him an order for all the Paizo stuff I didn't already have in dead tree

Thanks, Jack! I went to that shop once or twice when a friend went to Lancaster uni. I couldn't remember its name, though!

There's also Patriot Games, which has two branches that I know of; one in Huddersfield, the other in Sheffield. I've never been to the one in Sheffield, but it's probably safe to assume they're fairly similar. The one in Huddersfield offers hosting for various games (role playing through cards and into wargaming), they sell various types of games and in the case of role playing rulebooks, they encourage you to have a good read before you buy. They also sell soft drinks, and have no issue with customers eating in the shop so long as they don't make a mess. I spent far too much of my time at university in that shop instead of doing my assignments and probably spent more money on Fanta while I was there than on gaming paraphernalia...

Spirit Games is in Burton on Trent, not Stoke on Trent.

There is a games shop in Stoke (Shire Games) but it only does board and card games, not RPGs.

Wayland's forge here in Birmingham is doing okay, as far as I know. They sell a lot of things, with several bookshelves of Roleplaying Games, miniatures for wargames, board-games, collectible card-games - they even sell collectible miniatures games such as Monsterpocalypse which released earlier this year and which has been quite popular I gather.

The last I heard The Albatross 'toys and models' shop in Aberystwyth which retails roleplaying and collectible card games amongst other things, was ticking over fine, too, although I'm not sure if they sell Pathfinder...

Dark Archive

I can't find it to quote it now. But one of the Paizo Staff posted that they are creating a store locator to go live "soon"....

+1.

Being an Aussie who have never left his shores, I can not speak of his shop but his items are awesome. I have picked up some OOP items from him.

There was one other place over there I purchased Goodman Games DDC #35 from Nov last year. I just can not remember who atm.

Leisure Games is very good. It's my default 'order from them online' shop.

Orcs Nest ain't bad. Forbidden Planet around the corner from the Nest is also pretty well stocked.

I also use Patriot Games in Sheffield (I travel a deal in my job).

Pretty similar set up in Aberdeen to be honest - there's Asylum Comics & Games, but their rpg stuff is pretty thin... Plan 9 is another comics/collectables shop which has a small but well stocked games section, with some occasional gems to be found. I know the guys there, so similarly they'll order in deadtree copies of anything I'm after.

Seems the pickins up here in the north are pretty slim...

I also used to use Star Trader in Preston. It used to be called Thunderbooks 2 years ago. I'm not sure if it still sells RPGs though but they did stock a pretty good range.

Cool. Is it anything like how I described the one in Huddersfield?

Yes, it's like that. I sat in on a monday night game there while on business in Sheffield recently, and felt very welcome.

Great selection of rpgs too.

Last time I was through the guy who owns Asylum pretty much said he was giving up on RPGs as they weren't selling..

The Gameskeeper in Oxford, still seems to be going strong after years and years.

Ditto - it was a while back too... and as I get my comics order from Plan 9, they also order in any rpg stuff I want too...

to be honest I get most of my rpg stuff online via either paizo or other web vendors - Adventure's Gate, 13th Floor, Redbox Games to name but three... [the last one is a mini company - and an excellent norse themed one at that - how could I resist with my monicker!]
