Rise of the Runelords

I am thinking about how to introduce the Scarnetti family to the party.
I apologize for misspelling names - I don't have the adventure with me.

my idea:

I am thinking of having the Scarnetti's spread rumours that Lonjiko(sp?) caused the "recent unpleasentness" by opening up the smuggler tunnels and disturbing the evil temple and it's demon guardian.
They will say that Kendra covered it up to protect a political ally and bind him to her.
They will also say that Tsuko had discovered this and was blackmailing his "father". Tsuko has hung himself whilst in custody and the Scarnetti's will say he was murdered to stop him revealing the mayor's involvement.

The Scarnetti's will make an offer to the party for help in supporting these stories, or at least not trying to disprove them.

What do you think?

Sovereign Court

I think that would suit their scheming ways.

If anyone in your gang has done anything shady (like with the storekeeper's daughter) they could be approached, alone, by a Scarnetti who knows some of what they have done and will use it as leverage to keep the player on-side.

There are also about 1000 red herrings leading to the Scarnettis at the beginning of Pathfinder #2.

I have Sandpoint set up in my MapTool campaign so that players can click on the buildings and get the descriptions from Pathfinder #1. The PCs wandered around frantically searching for clues, and by the time they had finished with the descriptions, they were convinced the Scarnettis were behind the whole thing. It was excellent.

*blinks* I would love a copy of that camp. file, Toy :)

The CUP monster would eviscerate me if I ever let that file out. I'm happy to explain how it's done, though.

Spoiler:

First, I extract the key-less image from the PDF in adobe reader 8.

Then I plop the map in Maptool on the Background layer, and size it as big as I can without it being completely fuzzy at token-level zoom. For Sandpoint, that turns out to be about 2% zoom with the whole town (north to south) visible.

Then I get a nice, tiny transparent .png image. I put that image on the Object layer and resize it over whatever object I want to have a clickable description. Then you open up the Edit menu for that transparent object you just made, and past the player visible description into the "Notes" panel, and any GM notes you want in the GM notes panel.

Switch back to the Token layer. When you click on that part of the map now, the description will pop up! Since you only ever used one tiny .png over and over again for different objects, it is very economical in terms of memory.

I've done Sandpoint, the Lumber Mill, the Misgivings, and Magnimar all in this way. It's really fun to just let the players "wander" around town in their downtime, and the Misgivings was a blast with, well, you know what's there! It is also a good way to do crime scenes, traps, secret doors, and other investigations where you want the players to find things without having to drop hints yourself.

I really wish I could share my complete work, but that would definitely constitute a violation of the CUP. Maybe if some people wanted to get together a fan map and fan descriptions, I would compile them into a file like this.

Yes.

I feel that they will work better if the party already know of the Scarnetti.

That sounds fantastic.

Thank you for sharing! Good point about the CUP :) Did you use the descriptions from the book wholesale?

Sorry for the threadjack pjackson.

I did, but some sensitive information got transferred to the GM notes. I'll sometimes put a Diplomacy or Knowledge Local DC in the text, so players can come to me with their own agenda whilst walking about town.
