Query: Online Character Builder?

Product Discussion

Forgive me if this has been asked for already. I checked the titles of posts and didn't see anything resembling this, but I may have missed it.

Would it be possible, once the official ruleset hits the shelves in August, to have an online character builder be part of the Paizo site? I'm specifically thinking of PFrpg, but other builders might be possible to support other product lines.

Something that lets you determine race, class, level, skills/ranks, feats, even magic items (based on level-appropriate gold amounts), etc. which autopopulate a character sheet that could be printed out as a pdf. With the plethora of avatar images available, those could also be incorporated so players can have an image of their character to go along with the stats.

It could be a useful tool for DM's as well as players. DM's could check the calculations of their players, or they could create important npc's for their game. Players could accurately keep track of their stats and abilities from game session to game session.

It would also drive additional traffic to the site (for advertising purposes) as both players and DM's have to keep coming back to update and print out their sheets.

It wouldn't work for hybrids or character builds that don't follow the RAW, but they could use the portions they wanted and modify the rest (with options to modify stats as created before printing). Just something to think about. I, personally, would love it.

Thanks for listening!

We're not currently planning to do anything like that ourselves, as it's outside of our expertise—but there are other folks who have already invested effort into such things. Stay tuned.

Great, thanks! My inspiration for this (outside of being lazy hehe) is some old software for Champions where you could build characters and print them out all nice and neat (with the math proofed by the software), and even include a character portrait if you had an image that represented your toon.

I think Wotc may have something similar as well, but it was part of a paid membership (iirc) and I never subscribed to it.

I look forward to hearing more about this as things progress. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that Lone Wolf is developing a data set for their Hero Labs software. I believe that PCGen also supports the Beta currenty and suspect there are plans to incorporate the final once it has been released.

This isn't quite what you are looking for but it's close and its free.

Heroforge has some PF Beta builds out there.

Forgot about the Excel-builds - thanks. Regarding HeroForge, I'm pretty sure that they won't be developing the Excel-version any further; I suspect the plan is that they're going to release it through the new HeroForge software currently in development. That being said, there's nothing to prevent one from updating the existing file to reflect the final rule changes.

Another thought: I think that "TheOneSheet" provides support for Pathfinder.

Not sure what the plans are for PF, but I know the 3.5 Heroforge is still being updated and tweaked.

I think you're right about The One Sheet, and it has the advantage of being more activly supported... but not free.

Yeah, though I could have sworn I saw a message on the ML several weeks ago where they indicated that they were stopping further development of PF for 3.5 HF - at the request of the guys developing the new HF software package.

Another option is RPGXplorer, though I have no personal experience with it.

ML?

I don't know, I haven't really kept up with it except to grab the newest versions as they come out.

But don't get me started on the a**hats who came in and copywrited a the name/project that they had absolutley nothing to do with so they could cash in on it by charging for a 4e version. Guess now they're scrabbling to make money where they can.

Personally, I think the HF community should change the name and carry on. Heroforge™ may have stole the name, but they don't own the Exel work that has been done.

Ahem... sorry. [/rant]

You asked for online software, but how about a download? If you aren't already familiar with it, I highly recommend:

PCGen

Downloadable software would be fine, too. I'll check out PCGen. Thanks!

ML = Mailing List...no problems with the rant - can't say I disagree with you.

I've had amazing success with sCoreGen (as linked to above). The companion adVance (for magic) and sCoreKeeper (for wealth management and bookkeeping) are also top shelf. I think one of the best parts of these utilities is that they are much easier to customize than HeroForge and there's a messageboard community working to incorporate 3.5 elements from the campaign setting into the final document to allow for playability across the edition switch.

*bump*

Thats very disheartening to read.

I expected an answer like this.
But it would be great if you had a program for generating PCs.
Bar that a book allies and enemies book featuring a number of NPCs would be great I would be more interested in something like that more than a beastary but I think I am in the minoririty with that.

You mean something like this: Pathfinder Chronicles: NPC Guide (PFRPG)

Yes, very much so like that.
would be a huge help.
Just hope that there all very generic so you can slap them into anything.

BTW, I downloaded and installed PCGen over the weekend but couldn't get it to run (clicked on the self-created desktop page but it wouldn't run). I looked in the program folder to see if I could find the startup exe file with no luck. So I deleted it. I will have to try again, or try one of the other pieces of software mentioned.

I think I will wait until after the PFRPG rules are out next month, though. Thanks!

You need to have Java installed in order for PCGen to run.

I downloaded and installed Java prior to clicking on the shortcut for PCGen, but after downloading and installing PCGen, or so I thought. I can double check that before trying again, though. Thanks!

I am a fan of RPGXplorer myself...

It's free for character levels 1-5, but the full version is only $39.95 (payable through PayPal), and well worth the price IMHO...

We sell it here as well, so you can use a MasterCard or Visa. (And you can get the free demo there too.)

Liberty's Edge

Any of these support both PF and the 3.5 splat classes? I have a player that insists on playing either a warlock/scout/or warmage every AP, so it would be nice to use one system to track everyone.

You can add anything to RPGXplorer you'd like (and without having to know "computer-speak"). There are also, many files available for download both here and on the site I linked above, that have done the work for you (the classes from the PH II being one of them)...

I had the same problem. When I went to the website there was a known problem with needing to set up your javapath. It was pretty straight forward from what I remember, and it walked you right through it. Once done it was working fine for me. I'm using Windows Vista 64bit. Just a fyi, hope it helps.

Does the community know if any of the listed programs in this thread have been updated for the final release? Just curious which ones, if any, have been updated already and user feedback on them if so. Thanks!

Dos,

I believe the only one I've seen so far is Hero Lab's. They've had several updates since the release and are working on getting more and more info in as quickly as possible.

I have not seen any news from RPGXplorer or PCGen as of yet.

Thanks! I'm hoping to give PCGen a try, but haven't had a chance to go back and check them out. I may check out Hero Lab in the meantime. Thanks again.

Just a heads up for you Darkwolf. Us a**hats here at HeroForge Software are made up of Chris Mathieu (The Original creator of HeroForge), Robert Daneri and David Castelli (Lead Developers of the excel version for over 3 years). So yes we had every right to come in an copyright the name. So you say we had absolutely nothing to do with the project is assumptive at best. Maybe before you rant, you should get your facts straight. So again we stole nothing and have every right to what we have.

Yeah, well. Sorry about the 'a**hat' bit. Sometimes my mouth gets away from me.

Honestly, the only name that matters in your response is that of the creator. (That's not the name I recall attached to it originally, but my memory is not perfect.) Being a designer on a volunteer project, lead or otherwise, doesn't give you rights to the name and to decide to start charging for it. (My opinion only, not an attempt at statement of legal fact.)

For the record, I still think HF is the best excel character sheet available, and have been known to defend it vigorously when it is put up against Other sheets. It's mostly my love of the original that causes my frustrations with the changes.

I recommend this one. Its online, creates a nice character sheet, doesn't require you to install anything, and is free. You can even share your sheet with your GM and so some other neat stuff.

I checked that one out and it says Pathfinder Beta. Any news if they will upgrade it to the Pathfinder final release?

You know I thought they were on final but you're right, it does say Beta. I'm going to have to check and see what's up with that. I'll post back what I hear.

What WOTC has is a program called Character Builder which receives supplemental updates each month. I will say that in contrast to past WOTC offerings (like the garbage they stuck in the 3.0 Players Handbook) this offering works very well and makes it easy to whip out a 4e character of any level very quickly. It also has supplemental pre-release info such as the Psion (Telepath build) class and other stuff as part of Players Handbook 3 or added via Dragon articles. If you stop paying the program remains functional but you can't update it or re-install.
