Does Helm of Vast Intellect give double bonuses?

Looking at the Helm of Vast Intellect, it states that it gives you ranks in a skill equal to your hit die. Which was all and good until I also saw this in the Ability Bonus section in the back:

Modify all skills and statistics related to that ability. This might cause you to gain skill points, hit points, and other bonuses. These bonuses should be noted separately in case they are removed.

Does this mean you get skill points for a raised Intelligence in addition to the skill points the Helm gives you explicitly?

I would say yes. But keep in mind you don't get any extra skill points per level for having the headband on (unless this has changed) so the extra int will only raise your int-based skills, while the skill boosts could be applied to anything.

It has changed. From the Headband of Vast Intellect entry in the Pathfinder Beta:

Pathfinder Beta wrote:

A headband of vast intelligence has one skill associated with it per +2 bonus it grants. After being worn for 24 hours, the headband grants a number of skill ranks in those skills equal to the wearer’s total Hit Dice. These ranks do not stack with the ranks a creature already possesses. These skills are chosen when the headband is created. If no skill is listed, the headband is assumed to grant skill ranks in randomly determined Knowledge skills.

I don't have the rules in front of me, but the Headband bonus is an elegant compromise.

A *permanent* Ability Bonus now grants retroactive skill points (just like it does hit points).

So first thought is to let a Headband grant those retroactive points, and new ones as you level. But a Headband can be removed/lost/destroyed. Removing those skill points, after adding them, would be nightmarish bookkeeping. But it has always been quite unfair to not grant them (at *least* new ones).

So, instead, you get a particular skill (or skills), maxed. Not 100% optimal if you already have ranks in the skill, but otherwise it works very well.

That's how we're playing it now, but I don't see anything that states how these two rules interact. I'd like it to be a single bump if that's what was intended. And I agree it's a very elegant solution to the problem.

I would imagine then that any item that gives a bonus for more than a day would grant skill points in the same way. Perhaps it should state that somewhere.

A headband of vast intelligence does not give you additional skill points to allocate, rather than give you full ranks in the appropriate number of skills. The only other bonus conferred would be the bonus provided to all intelligence based skills, and that's the ability modifier.
