Do you think Canada would, or could elect a woman prime minister (I know we had Kim Campbell but she wasn't elected). Do you think that we could have a gay or lesbian prime minister. Do you think with the Canadian political atmosphere as it is now that it could happen?

For that matter do you think we could elect a homosexual person into major public office in the united states. I know we have already in Canada elected people like MP Scott Bryson (openly gay) and MP Sven Robinson (also openly gay) but I am unsure if the states have as of yet had a openly gay man in major public office.(Senator, Governor supreme court justice, President, Vice president). Do you think there would be a lot of major opposition to it?

(I'm collecting thoughts and viewpoints for the New Democratic Party of Canada so all opinions would be nice and interesting)
P. S. Please keep it civil.

Barney Frank (a representative from Massachusetts) came out back in '87. As of 2009, he's one of three out-and-serving representatives in Washington. There was one prior, also from MA. Frank had been first elected to the House back in '81. His fellow elected officials felt quite free with slinging the usual slurs his way at public events.

The first to be out when elected to Congress was Tammy Baldwin in 1998. The first man to be out when first elected was Jarid Polis in 2008.

New Jersey had a gay governor, but we didn't find out until he resigned.

Judging by this list, we have a lot more coming up.

These are just the ones who have owned up. We've had more than a few who got caught soliciting gay sex and then insisted that they were not in fact gay. It's apparently common knowledge in Washington circles that various officeholders are in the closet, which is the subject of a recent documentary.

I don't know that you'd count him, but James Buchanan (president 1856-1860, one of our absolute worst) may never have came out but certainly looks pretty gay. The evidence is not conclusive (the next of kin burned the correspondence which would have helped us know) but it's certainly suggestive even when allowing for Victorian phrasing.

So you are Canadian? Frankly the only point of view I expect from a Political Party is: Every act of Government, Law, Constitution, Sovereign requires the direct and regular approval of every citizen.

That way we only go in the same direction.

I'll vote for you.

Hehe.

I've long thought that people should be able to plead, "Not guilty by reason of mind your own damn business."

Sooo .. Government by census poll? Mob rule? What exactly does this mean?

As an aside, is that Stephen Harper dude still in office? My mom hasn't gone on a tirade about him lately, so I'm not sure if he got voted out or not.

I think we could elect a female PM (assuming she was affiliated with a major party, no offense to Alexa et al... :) )

Openly gay? That one seems less likely. However, there's a lot of cosmopolitan voters in Quebec and some of the larger cities. So perhaps a minority head of a coalition. Maybe followed by a variation of the Diefenbaker strategy (get a minority, govern competently for a few months and then win a snap majority after engineering a fall).

I don't know as much about the US. But my impression is that it's a lot more conservative than Canada. As an example, Alberta -Canada's most right wing province- still does more social spending per capita than Massachusets -arguably America's most left wing state-.

Let's put it this way. Once the Americans let openly gay people risk their lives as soldiers maybe someday they'll let one of them have a little authority in civilian life.

How about creating a legislative body by random selection (sort of like a jury of three or four hundred members)? Keep the elected folks but add in one of average people from all walks of life.

Yeah, Harper is still around but his reputation has taken a major beating since his major fumble late last year.

(takes a special kind of talent to turn an economic crisis into a political crisis and then to turn that political crisis into a full fledged constitutional crisis :) )

You needing the approval of the guy whose car you drunkenly firebombed just to retain your right to a beer.

I can't speak for Canada, but I'm sure the United States would and will elect women and gays to public office. Where I live, it is one of the most conservative towns in the most conservative state in the U.S. and we have elected an openly gay mayor. Not only was he elected, but he was reelected. His sexuality was never even an issue in the campaign. In his reelection campaign he ran unopposed. I know this is anecdotal, but if we can do it, the country can do it.

They are doing pretty well with electing Selfish bastards with agendas other than they claim...How many Presidents is that now?

AS a funny aside, apparently a large percentage of political aids in washington are gay. Including most republican political aids. Funny huh.

To answer your question I live in Canada and my mother is canadian. My father and his family are american from Arizona. My father has served in the US military as has my Grandfather who met my grandmother in germany back in WW2. I am a duel citizen who is equally proud of both heritages I share, I currently live in Canada for education purposes, but who knows where life will take me after this.

And yes I am now working for the NDP, and some talk has been thrown around about me being sponsored for election to public office where I am a young minority with a high education. But it requires me to be more stable as far as where I`ll be living. So no time in the near future will I be in any form of office:P

Most of them?

As a US citizen, I didn't know that. To paraphrase/mangle the old joke: "I'm not gay, but the-intern-I'm-having-an-affair-with is."

Oh my God! An educational migrant. When will this wretched tide of unwanted 'Boat people' crossing the great lakes end?

PS cant hold office in Canada unless born in Canada and/or a Citizen of Canada. I realize Canada fell to the US in a secret invasion a few years back, but that dont cut it.

Was born in Canada and spent most of my life in Canada, I therefore can hold office. I have dual citizenship.

Heh. Other way around for me. Born in America, never lived outside America, but I was adopted, and my recently-discovered biological family seems to be the entire population of Cape Breton, LOL. Got my dual citizenship too. You never know what the future holds, and I always like to keep my options open. I'd love to retire up there, it's like my home area of Cape Cod was 40 years ago.
