The best theory I can come up with is Wish or Miracle as a spell-like ability.
So the question is: What kind of Monster has Wish/Miracle as a spell-like ability? Pit Fiends, sure, but I can't imagine MiTD is a devil. High Level Angels might have Miracle, but again, I can't see MiTD being angelic.
The only thing we know for a fact is that it IS a real monster from the books and not a made-up one and that Rich knew what it was since #100 (he's said as much in other sources).
Someone on the GiTP forums suggested that maybe the creature is used to getting what it wishes for? Mentioned here.

There are a number of creatures that can cast HL spells... but they are all smart enough to know what they are, escape with plane travel, etc.
So beats the heck outta me. But it was certainly an unexpected twist. Now... where did they go?
P.S. Meteor Swarm with the caster's hand in your mouth = OUCHIES!

I wish to add that I always enjoy the justifications of class features in OOTS, such as the one given here by O-Chul for his good Saves (ie, Divine Grace).
And the point-blank Meteor Swarm had a very nice ring to it. Even moreso since Xykon reverted to typical undead disgust and naked hatred of living beings ("sickening pouches of warm goo").

Um when have the MitD's eyes not glowed, granted they vibrated a bit, but that might just have been him really emphasising his point, I'm just saying :D

Point blank meteor swuhh!!
Teleport would include the caster, and MitD stayed. Rather, I think it was polymorph other. Notice you can not tell the gender on one of those roaches?
Possibly, and it's a possibility I like. The only problem is that there are clearly at least two roaches in the panels before V and O-Chul disappear, but only three roaches in the last panel. I would tend to think there should be four. The "pop!" effect around V and O-Chul is also consistent with the effect Burlew uses for teleport, as well; while other shapeshifting spells have traditionally been illustrated rather differently. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but I think Rich goes for consistency in the way he displays his magical effects.
I don't know what the MitD did. I thought perhaps plane shift, but that can't be just on the basis that it's a touch spell when used to shift another creature. Then again, isn't teleport?

Maybe the MitD has the Reach Spell feat?
(yes, I know, it's kind of a... reach)

I don't think it was teleport or a polymorph spell. If you look at strip 658, there are clearly three roaches in front of the box.
I've been trying to figure MitD and I have no clue. I know he can create an earthquake by stamping his feet, is no larger than large size, has high DR, illistrates himself as a long black line, and is repulsive. I'm assuming that the "escape" is an epic spell like ability since the Cloister spell is still active.

Add unbelievably high strength to that! I'm not sure whether his seeming lack of... Intelligence? Wisdom?... is common to his entire species (in which case it might give us more hints about what the thing is) or just this particular individual (which I suspect is the case and does our guessing no favors).
