SRD states: An integral part of becoming a lich is creating a magic phylactery in which the character stores its life force. As a rule, the only way to get rid of a lich for sure is to destroy its phylactery. Unless its phylactery is located and destroyed, a lich reappears 1d10 days after its apparent death.
So sadly, V and O'Chul must fail in order to make the comic go forward.
Or, destroying the phylactery makes Xykon killable and then they will succeed.

Yeah...this seems like one of those "too good to be true" situations. Besides, I don't know that I want my OotS without Xykon.
I imagine they'll get pretty close, though, just to keep the tension high. This is definitely an edge-of-your-seat moment for the comic.
(I wonder if Xykon has telekinesis memorized?)

I could be mistaken but destroying the phylactery does not automaticly kill the Lich. It just means it cant resurrect when it is killed.
I think you're correct, Kevin, but destroying Xykon's phylactery would make him extremely vulnerable. I'm just not sure that Rich Burlew is ready to do that to such a popular villain.

Yes! Rock on, O-Chul, you are awesome!
My bet is they destroy the phylactery and Xykon has to teleport the hell out of there, leaving Azure City without it's main defender/occupier (and Redcloak will probably go with him), so the humans can return and perhaps begin to rebuild. Xykon will be very vulnerable from here on out. I don't know whether Burlew interprets the rules as allowing a lich to create another phylactery, but this could be the beginning of the end for Xykon. I mean, the OotS has to beat him sometime, right?
