CMD and 3.5 feats

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Scarab Sages

I had a discussion on CMB/CMD a while back concerning what bonuses some monsters should get to CMB. Mostly because, since the curve had been reduced (Improved ___ feats only grant a +2 instead of a +4 now, Large gives a +1 instead of +4, etc.) it seemed like other bonuses should go down. A monster that had a +8 to grapple, for example, may only have a +4 now.

Anyways, I am wondering about a feat in question that a Fighter in one of my games was thinking about, from the Player's Handbook 2 called "Shield Ward". It requires "Shield Specialization" (basically the PHB2's version of Shield Focus, just a +1 bonus to AC with a shield), but otherwise he can qualify.

"Shield Ward" grants the user the ability to apply their Shield bonus to touch AC (which I am cool with), but also the ability to apply their Shield bonus to all rolls to resist disarm, grapple, overrun, and trip. Basically CMD.

I am wondering if I should go with the half bonus like I have been doing with other things, or allow the full bonus. The bonus right now is +5 (+2 heavy steel shield, +1 from Shield Spec) so it is a pretty beefy number.

Thoughts?

I have to wonder how Paizo is going to suggest bonuses for these things be converted when the final game is out. Just halve everything, or keep some things... I guess we shall see.

Well it would seem like a good idea to test it out a few times first. If you've got a player looking to do it, try starting off with half the bonus rounded down at first and if it seems more powerful or less powerful, feel free to scale it a little more/less.

It is pretty situational, so it probably won't break your games by experimenting with it like that.
