No, I think he's going to do it. I think V is going to destroy Xykon. It's already happened once. But I think Redcloak will get away with the phylactery, or V will loose the soulsplice before he can take out Redcloak and said phylactery. So, I'm calling for Xykon to get blown up again, but not permanently.
This is why I love liches.

By the themes of the strip, enormous personal power won't allow Vaarsuvius to defeat Xykon and Team Evil. Perhaps the lich has some way of dismissing the soul-shards. I'm not sure of the details, but I know that it will be amusing to watch.
Vaarsuvius probably won't end up dead; Xykon is keeping a paladin around for laughs and torture, and I'm sure he'll keep V safe and trussed up somewhere, too.

Now that would be great if it was a good creature.

It would be in character for our lich friend to do as much... I get the feeling from reading the comic that whatever is in the darkness doesn't even really know what it is.

Honestly, a few strips ago, the necromancer left the building. Where did she go?
I think Xycon and Redcloak have another ally and will be revealed as having gotten her a new living or undead body.
After all, she had access to V's head, and allying with a powerful evil cleric and his lich sidekick? Well, that can easily keep her out of hell and let her have more fun.

I really doubt Xykon possesses or is in any way allied with the fled soul of the necromancer. Examine her exit in OotS 641: She is screaming about freedom, not betraying V, not running off to find another host. The archfiends also say they're going to send someone to collect the loose soul.
Having Xykon suddenly turn up with the soul would be a really random twist, and not one which developed naturally. It would feel forced. Such an event requires, and OotS has always in the past provided, foreshadowing.
Again, Xykon's already been defeated once. He was totally destroyed, but it doesn't matter because he's a lich. V never called the party on not eliminating his phylactery, though I think by now we can expect such a mistake not to be made a second time.
I truly think V has the power to waste Xykon, Redcloak, and every other lackey they've got. However, he's either going to loose control over the soulsplice before accomplishing his stated goal of beating Xykon, or he looses the splice before he can stop Redcloak from escaping with the phylactery. IMO. We'll see as soon as Mr. Burlew gets the next few strips up!
