Wish Spell?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Scarab Sages

Hello everyone this is my first post and I am new to Pathfinder. :)

I have a question in regards to the Wish spell for a high level Vampire that used it to Wish themself imune to regular daylight.

What do you think? Too powerful? Please assist and tell me what you think, thank you.

Wouldn't that defeat the entire point of playing a vampire?

For Rp reasons I can understand the wish. In that context, with an extensive background with the players in the group, it wouldn't be too overpowerful. But without that, I would say no as a DM, or at the very least persuade them to choose to become mortal again instead.

IMO, it is too powerful in its current form but is certainly not outside the realms of possibility. Consider an Extraordinary ability that (for example) scales to how much sunlight the wished vampire is exposed to, such as gaining the Blinded, Staggered and Shaken conditions when exposed to direct sunlight. Cloudy, snowy or rainy days/indoors might only give the wished vampire the Staggered and Shaken condition. However such a mechanic can slow down gameplay.

Another option is to have the Vampire template removed during the day, regardless if they are inside or outside. So in effect, the vampire is a normal mortal of whatever race and class (and may be killed by normal, conventional means) until the sun disappears below the horizon, whereupon they regain the template. (Staying up for the dawn can still be dangerous for a vampire; the loss of their d12 Hit die could bring a wounded vampire below 0HP at dawn.) For an added twist, if the wished Vampire is exposed to a solar or lunar eclipse, then it bursts into flames, ala normal daylight.

For a NPC, it's fine IF it makes sense story-wise.

For a PC, my initial reaction is... sure "regular sunlight". As long as the PC is getting regular doses of sunlight, say 1 minute every hour, he's immune to sunlight. But as soon as a full hour passes without exposure to sunlight, the immunity is gone.

Of course, it's more fun to not mention such details when the wish spell is cast. Eventually, the PC will be surprised by a nasty sunburn and figure it out. :)

Sorry I should have explained better, We had met a NPC high level Vampire on their own turf that could walk in daylight, the particular NPC was LE and controlled some lands about their Castle, needless to say night was a real pain, and daylight was suprising as we made our way to this particular Castle and met this highly capable Vampire that was walking about on the battlement in broad daylight.

The DM's theory was this particular NPC enjoyed power, and control.. hence the Lawful Evilness of the NPC, the NPC used a "Wish" spell to grant himself immune to Natural daylight but all the other rules still applied, sleeping in the coffin etc, we as a party had a little trouble with the Wish.. to explain the NPC benefits.

The Vampire was a 23 encounter level by himself..

I like your thinking.. and would make sense.. I mean for complete Unholy Hell about to rain down.. we were freaking out! Daylight powerful Vampire... The Vampire was like a 5th Fighter, and a 19th Level wizard or somtething.

He was LE, story had it that he changed after his Lord died and began a crusade against his enemy, once defeated by magic, he began to study in the arts of Wizardry.. through adventure he gained coin.. and controlls 3 small towns in which they pay taxes, etc.. if they break rules then.. Hello.. death or whatever.. somewhere along the way he was killed by a Vamp.

I see no problem with it. As long as it's not a common occurance, it can be quite powerful - as you've shown: You're freaked out. That means the GM has done his job.

I wouldn't even complain if a PC did it - he already gets a massive level adjustment (which serves as a deterrant against playing a vampire), and blowing a wish (or nearly 30.000 for a powerful caster to use wish on you, or something like that) to be able to go on adventures without too much hassle sounds alright.

Thanks for the input, I basicaly got Killed... but since we were playing as a Nuetral, to Lawful evil party.. we are continuing.. Unfortunately I guess I have a master now to deal with, it seems almost impossible to kill him, but the story is good so I guess as long as we are all having fun, thats what matters.
