I created an character at Gencon '08 and haven't touched him since. I'm thinking about picking him up and getting my toes wet over the next few months, but don't want to bother if I'm just going to have to start over at the beginning of season 1 anyway.
I *think* I remember reading there will be a conversion process to take season 0 characters into season 1...is that correct? If so, have any details been released?

Hi! It's pretty close to Gencon, now. :p How is this going to work with players unable to purchase the Core Rulebook which the Pathfinder Document references for everything and the PDF won't go on sale until the day of Gencon? I really wanted to get the character re-created (definitely would not call this a conversion) and didn't want to spend my first morning of Gencon fumbling through character creation before my 12:00 PM session. (God knows that really sucks for the 8:00 AM folks :( ) Is Paizo taking steps so people are ready for play on Thursday? Work arounds? Is the PDF going on sale at 12:00 AM on Thursday - ah, no, it looks like it's on sale at 12 PM on Thursday - when I'm scheduled for Tygora's Fire? HUH?
I don't mean to be negative, but this doesn't seem very well planned for the players that are attending Gencon with their characters from last year, nor very thoughtful of the players time. Is there another document about that takes care of these problems? If so, please point me to it. :)
I love what you guys are doing - 3.5 was a great ruleset and I'm glad to see it live on through Pathfinder. Sorry to complain, I'm just not understanding the logic behind how you expect people to create characters and be ready to play without being able to get to the Core Rules. Thanks for your understanding.
Thanks!
Cory

I am confused here... you ask what there plan is for people who won't have the book, but then I think you say what the plan is.
To make it clear.
Thursday morning from 8-12 that whole session is set aside to help people convert thier characters, GMs will be there with books to help with the process.

Hiya... Exactly what I don't want to be doing for the first morning of Gencon, as to opposed to maybe, seeing Gencon. ;) Thanks for the response.
I'm just voicing I think this is heckuva lot of hassle and time drain on Gencon attendees if the rules are released.

Well then I don't know what else to suggest other then get on that line early at the Pazio booth at 10am to get a copy.
Either way especially since you are the first game slot at 1 I think it would be best for you to have your character ready before the game starts. We only have 4 hours to run a game, and the game won't wait for you to make your character, Though as a GM I would still help, but not to a point that it slows down the game. Most likely I would just hand the book over to you and answer questions here and there while you convert the character. But you would lose out in getting really involved in the beginning of the scenario.
All this is based on personal opinions, But I hate when a player is not ready for a game, but as a GM I have to deal with it.
Also you have the choice of playing a PreGen your first game but then you lose out in advancing your character.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have character conversion Thursday morning at 8am and then I play in the first slot at 1pm.
Stats will be the same, spells will be similar to beta. The only problem is traits and you can temporarily pick some before you can pick properly. Gear... prices might change but what you want/need doesn't. Feats wouldn't be perfect if I had a high level character, but a level 1-2 character it should be fun and easy to pick again.
Sure, my characters (I have 3) won't be perfect (until I read more of the PRPG), but they'll all be convention legal and good enough to play.

All this is based on personal opinions, But I hate when a player is not ready for a game, but as a GM I have to deal with it.
And the issue is that the book will be generally available, at BEST, for maybe 3 hours before the first slot.
And that ignores that there will, almost certainly, be a line at the booth. Whether it is the Paizo store booth or the character generation table from 0800-1200 hours.
Which ignores that there are people, like me, who are most definitely NOT, emphatically not, morning people, so a 1300 slot may be only a short time after I would, normally, be waking up. I make an effort, at cons and game days, to be there on time, but adding extra non-gaming wakeful hours to an already stressful schedule is not a great deal of fun. YMMV.
Overall, Paizo's decision to only have the rulebook for the REQUIRED character updates available only, at MOST, 5 hours before updated characters are going to be required, is a less than optimal decision, IMO.
Or, to put it another way, the GenCon release of both the gaming system, and an update to an organized play campaign using those rules, is not terribly beneficial to either one.
Do you spend the first day properly updating your characters, or do you slap them together, and hope that the rules let you better fine-tune them later, just to be able to play them right away? Or, finally, do you MAYBE pick up the rulebook at GenCon, if they are still in stock when you get the chance, and play OTHER games at GenCon so you don't have that additional pressure on you?
Just something to think about.

They give you the ability to have plenty of time to convert your character during the morning slot Thursday, If you do not wish to take that option that is up to you. I am not sure what else you are expecting.
My opinion still stands as my opinion, It is up to you to take the opportunity to take the option given to you to convert your character if you available to be there between 0800-1300.
If 8 is to early for you show up at 9, if 9 is to early show up at 10, if 10 is to early show up at 11...and so on.
I will not kick any off my table who character is not ready, but I will also not let that one player distract my game and ruin the fun of the other players, I will hand off the book to that player and let him have at it, and answer simple questions as I can as long as I can.
For those players who arrive later to the Con I suggest you show up for your game at least an hour early so you can convert while waiting for your game.
There will be books available for use of conversion if you don't have your own.
If none of this is satisfactory for you, I just don't know what you want.

Hiya. Well, like I said, I just think Paizo is really pushing the bounds of what is reasonably expected for people to be ready for their games at Gencon. Seriously, what about the casual gamers that want to "try out" the new system and signed up for games and don't realize what needs to be done or find out and choose not to? Yes, you can use pre-gens, but does that allow you to keep your experience and apply it to a later created character? (If so, it's better than I thought, but still a pretty bad solution in terms of satisfaction.)
I think this is a dis-service to the Gencon attendee consumer who has to waste their convention time forced to re-tool their characters hours before they start playing with brand new material. I'm hoping you have alot of avid fans signed up, because otherwise you may have complete chaos if a good portion of the folks aren't ready, and that is Paizo's fault - not the players who are trying to prepare beforehand. Bad timing on the "players that are not ready" quote - this is a situation because of Paizo decisions and if that's the policy the only people they can blame are themselves. ESPECIALLY when they could be selling the PDFs beforehand.
I'll get my character converted one way or another before my first slot, but it doesn't detract from the fact that I think this is really unreasonable and not a good PR choice for Paizo. I really, >REALLY< love Paizo and want them to succeed - they have excellent products and service up to this point and I put a lot of money in their coffers because of it. But, as I said, I entirely disagree with this policy which promotes book selling at Gencon while immensely disadvantages and wastes the time of the Gencon attendees who are there to support Paizo. Having the PDF available this week would have entirely avoided my rants, and I'm going to buy two or three books anyway.
Anyway - please make this known to Paizo management. That's my intent here, to make sure that they know my feelings as to properly treat a consumer.
Thanks for your responses, Dragnmoon, but I respectfully disagree that this is reasonable.
Thanks!
Cory

Will there be pregens available for people who don't feel like doing last-minute conversions?
Josh has stated that pre-gen characters will be available for play.

Though that is a great option, Just to note, any Traits you use that are not in the PFS Guide for characters you make at the Con you either need to bring the book that the trait is in or a printed up copy of the page from the PDF.
I will be bringing printed up copies of every page from the books with stuff allowed for the PFS for the players I help.

Wow, it seems like taking a deep breath would be a good idea here...and remembering how cool it's going to be to play in some of the very first Society scenarios using PFRPG characters! *jealous*
Seriously, I don't think that character conversion is going to be a real problem. How hard is it, really, for a veteran gamer to stat up a completely CORE character in a jiffy? If you are really, really concerned about it, then I would suggest one of two things: sketch out a converted PC using the Beta and then spend a few minutes adjusting to the final rule set, or politely ask someone on the boards who has the core rulebook already to help you with the conversion before you leave for GenCon. I'm sure someone would be happy to step up and help you out. :)
Happy gaming!

Thats something I'm almost done with as well. My copy of the 2.0 rules has all the relevant printed off pages in the back. At least all the ones I have pdf's of anyway. Still don't have a pdf of the campaign book or classic monsters revisited but I do have the real book for all of them.
If anyone would like a copy of the word doc, just get me an email addy and I'll send it to you. Although if this would be against any ogl rules or whatnot then hopefully someone who knows them better will let me know.

I'd appreciate a copy - peacecorpsbrian @t hotmail d0t com
And I already own all the books you'll be drawing from, so you're simply helping me organize the information I already have, not pirating anything :)

My wife and I are both playing in a PFS event on Thursday in the evening slot (6-10pm), but have events earlier in the day that will prevent us from attending the 8am conversion "class", for lack of a better word.
I have an existing Qadira character, my wife has nothing. I was going to help her make a new pc tonight using the beta rulebook (since that's all we have), but now I might recommend she just take a pre-gen and go from there. I will show up at my 6pm event as early as possible (I have another event that runs till 5 and would like to try to eat during that time as well), but I will hopefully be able to convert pretty quickly.
Thanks for the postings on here - they helped answer my Q before I ever had to ask.
