Arcane bonding and spell failure?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Does spell failure from armor affect spells casted from your arcane bonded item?

( i´m think it doesn´t, since i think of it working more like a wand with 1 charge per day rather than you yourself casting the spell, but i´m not sure)

another question

does one have to cast a spell on the arcane bonded item and then use that "charge" later ( like a spell storing principle ) or does it just give another spell per day which does not require you to cast a spell beforehand?

I´m confused :S

Yes, Spell failure affects a wizard's Arcane Bond item spell. It is cast in all ways as if the Wizard had. It's not charged up beforehand or anything.

It compares strongly with spontaneous spell casting, like a sorcerer, from a spells known list that includes everything the wizard is capable of casting.

I mostly agree with Majuba.

First and foremost, the beauty of Arcane Bond with an item is that you can use it for any spell you know - no need to prepare it in advance. So ust it for all those utility spells, the ones that you might cast once per adventure, or less, but when it comes up you say "Oh, I wish I had that spell ready" - but you never have them ready because you use those precious slots for spells you need much more regularly. Now you have a way to dip into the back of your spellbook once/day for something unusual.

Last game I played my wizard, our rogue player didn't show up, so we were rogueless, and came to a locked door. My wizard never prepares knock because we always have a rogue. Boom - one Knock spell from the Arcane Bond and we were golden. I love my Arcane Bond.

Now as to the other part of the OP's question, I don't see anything in the description that says the bonded spell must be cast with the same restrictions as if you had cast it.

The text does say "just as if the wizard had cast it" but I believe that is in reference to determing duration, save DC, and other level-based effects, but is not a reference to the requirements of actually waving your hands and shouting arcane words.

Accordingly, using this interpretation, it's very easy to argue this question either way. Some may say the wizard has to physically cast the spell like any other spell, components and all, others may say it works like a spell-completion item, like a wand or scroll, and either argument may be equally valid according to the text as written.

Which is to say, it would be up to the DM.
