I've begun the preliminary work on my RotRL campaign for my group, and I have calendar-related question.
In Burnt Offerings, the synopsis states that the campaign begins on the day of the Swallowtail Festival, the first day of autumn. Now, in another post on the boards, James Jacobs has said that this would be 21, 22, or 23 Rova 4707. My choice is 21 Rova, since that is analogous to our calendar.
Based on information in other APs, Chronicles, and such, does anyone know what day of the week this would be? I'm sure picking a day would be easy enough, but I was curious if anyone had an official answer.
Thanks.

I'm not sure. There's a couple calendar's in the Community Created thread you might take a look at. I don't think they agree though.

According to the Pathfinder Campaign sourcebook, the Autumnal Equinox is shared by Harvest Feast and Swallowtail Festival... It also states that the Swallowtail Festival is on the second Moonday(238-239 on the PDF). So therefore the date of the 21st would be incorrect as they use the standard 7 day week (unless James knows something different). The date of the Swallowtail Festival would have to be a day between the 8th and the 14th.

I have studied this section of the PCS, and the holidays listed under each equinox and solstice seem like they would be found around those days, not necessarily occuring on that day. For example, Harvest Day is listed under Lamashan (October) in the section above this one. The book also states that fall begins in Rova (September), and Lamashan seems a bit late for the season to change in relation to the other seasons. So, Harvest Day is associated with the beginning of fall, but not exactly the starting day of it.
Based on the passage from Mr. Jacobs, either 21, 22, or 23 Rova is appropriate. According to the calendars listed in the Community-Created thread, the general concensus is that 21 Rova 4707 AR is a Starday, which actually works on a lot of levels. "Star" for Desnsa, of course, but also it's the last work day of the week before two days dedicated to religion. The people of Sandpoint could celebrate the dedication of the cathedral prior to actually attending their first ceremonies in the new place of worship.

Based on the calendars done by Lilith and Fray (which Mike McArtor had mentioned are considered Golarion Canon), the first day of Autumn in 4707 is Nova the 1st.
I noticed that the calendars list the start of each season at the 1st day of the first month listed under each season in the PCS. And while that works to give a general idea of which months make up which seasons, I think that seems a bit too planned out. It is certainly possible that the creators of the Absolam calendar simply arranged the months to correspond directly with the seasonal changes, but that would require are great deal of forethought and calculations to make sure that months deemed appropriate for each season came during htat time. I'm sure that's how the publishers handled the establishment of the calendar, but seems a bit far fetched that the calendar creators within Golarion would have done so. More likely, the calendar was established and put into effect, and then the seasons simply came and went around this artificial construct for keeping time, similar to how it happened in our world.
I would agree that Rova is the first month of fall, exactly as September is the first month of fall. However, September is not all fall weather, but more of a transition between summer and fall weather, and even that depends on where you're located, climate, and so on.
I guess what we need to know is whether or not the calendar was designed so that the equinoxes and solstices fall on the first days of the appropriate months or if they simplay occur within the month. My guess is the latter, since Golarion's calendar mimics our own.

I think we can figure out when the Swallowtail Festival is with a little bit of information. Does anyone know any cannon reference for how long a year is? The PCS says 52 weeks of 7 days, but I seem to remember somewhere that each month is exactly 30 days with a leap year every 8 with the leap day at the end of Arodus.
The key to figuring it out is that in Shadow in the Sky, there is a note on p.15 that says that the 14th day of Arodus in 4708 AR is an Oathday. We can work backwards from there to figure out the Swallowtail Festival if we know how long a year is.
