Is the spell Horrid wilting too weak nowadays? I mean, in 3.0 it was 1D8 per level with a cap at 25D8, in 3.5 it got reduced into D6s and now the cap has been lowered to 20D6. I liked the 3.0 version more, IMHO nowadays there isn't that much point in the spell. For example, Delayed Blast Fireball is a lower level spell with same damage, with the option of delaying the damage. If you need a party-friendly spell, a Chain Lightning (6th level), or an Empowered Chaing Lightning (8th level) would do just fine..

It's weaker because it gets around elemental immunities, and does extra damage to water and plant creatures. It's still an excellent spell, especially if you know you're going up against a druid.

It's not a bad spell at all.
Sure, other spells have similar damage.
Other spells have friendly fire disabled. But only Horrid Wilting has that damage AND has friendly fire disabled AND ignores energy resistance AND gets rogues as it's a fort save.
Well, I guess its true that its not a bad spell, it is OK after all. But I still think that its not a *good* spell like it was before.
At least if your DM lets you use the Archmage PrC from 3.5 you don't usually need to worry about elemental resistance (mastery of elements and sonic FTW).

Also horrid wilting has a greater area - with the creatures it targets being up to 60 feet apart, that's effectively a 30' radius sphere, compared to fireball or DBF with only a 20' radius spread.
Yeah, but chain lightning is also 30' radius.. And an empowered chain lightning does 50% more damage to the primary target.

Please don't. My monk got hit with a maximized casting of this and took damage because of it's Fort save instead of Reflex. It hurt. It may not be optimal, but it has its uses.
I agree (except the part about keeping it as it is :). Now it is kinda a special purpose spell to deal party-friendly direct damage to a large number of people who have evasion or ludicrous elemental resistances in all elements. Single rogues would be dealt with cheaper with disintegrate or finger of death.
